I prefer to use Puppy Linux 5.1. It's super lightweight and has almost all the typical programs that an Ubuntu user would want: Chromium, Opera, Firefox, VLC Player, AbiWord, OpenOffice, GIMP, Audacity, WINE, Foxit PDF, etc. It has a million useful utilities from DVD burner to torrent downloader.
I think Ubuntu is too bloated for a device with these specs. But to each their own. I love this device. Definitely for Christmas!
that was an interessting idea, but how is the info pad comming along?
any updates?i'd like to know if there is any work done on options for processors above 1ghz and 512mb ram which is a little weak compareing with to days market.
for me the AA battery and the ruggedness is the perks that still makes this item very intressting.
it has been quite some time since any news, i'd very much like to know how the infopad is comming along?
Thank you.

I run Slackware 13.0 (the full distro) on mine.
It's a complete development institute (to be modest) running on 2.5W PC!
It's the greenest PC in the world IMO
Heck, I even write this off the EduBook

I run on it:
wine: WINAVR, LTspiceIV, VMLAB
Open Office.org suite
Inkscape 0.46 (vector graphic worthy of CorelDraw(tm)10 at least)
the full Slackware's myrayd of software
I surf with Seamokey most of time as the fastest amongst quite few browsers i have here (chrome included)
I ran KDE few times (4.3) and find it quite boring to start after it behaves more responsive to use - most of time I use Thunar and mc
Mplayer and Xine work well, VLC too
and few games like Xgalaga and Powermanga
