  • Awsome! And thanks for your story. I love Bernard Edwards bass lines, but this also I had some problems with. Now I understand better how to do it. Thank you!

  • Well done!

  • Bernard came hard with a solid and precise speed. So that's why I'm going to say fuk yo shyt w/ great trollesk hatership. Ur nothing but a LMFAO lookn' P.U.P. + No muthafuka, Chic didn't change the speed when they produced it back in 77! Thanks for the commemoration though!

  • @wrathofslaves LOL.. you're killing me over here. You JUST personified one of my favorite quotes.. "It's better to remain silent and have people THINK you're an ass rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt." Thanks for supporting my point of view. By the way.. the whole idea of a tutorial video is to slow it down so people can see what you're doing. If you watched the whole thing, I played it at the right speed. But someone with limited intellect wouldn't grasp that.

  • Heavy vibes

  • outstanding. I spent all day today on this song -wrestling with the right hand approach. The anecdote & the demo are greatly appreciated. I especially like that you had the opportunity to meet your hero, and, like other viewers commeted, he turned out to be cool & instructive. The best part - Brooklyn!

  • @wyldkatt2005 All day? LOL.. man.. you need to get out and get some fresh air. This was a pain in my ass for weeks after I learned it.. I'm glad you appreciated the video. I guess you're from Brooklyn as well?

  • @megavega4 Queens

  • must...have....tabs.

  • @creedence18 Sorry bro... no tabs here. Gotta use your ear. The song is in C minor. That's about all I can help you with, other than the demonstration outlined in the video. Take it slow.. you can do it.

  • nice vid mate

  • U da man !!

  • SO DAMN DOPE, DUDE. MANY THANKS...I got so long a ways to go with my skills..geezes...

  • Great story! Thanks for sharing.

  • Great demo, was wondering same as you used to how he got that sound on the record without fingering it (or even double tracking!) when I cam across this video- many thanks for sharing it! I now know what I'll be doing for the next couple of weeks.

  • Thanks for the post and sharing the story! The bass is such a wonderfully diverse instrument whether slap or finger style, picking or chucking.....its all about feeling what you play and becoming one with your instrument! You did a great job of explaining and demonstrating Bernard's style! Thank you, my brother! RIP Nard!

  • Great upload. Really enjoyed that. Good story too. Normally meeting heroes is a big disappointment.

Quite bizarre that 8 people felt the need to hit dislike. I mean...really?

  • @3rduncle LOL.. yannno? Haters live everywhere.. but it's all good. If 8 people disliked it and 164 liked it, I'm not too worried. Everyone has the right to their opinion. I just did this video out of love and respect for Bernard...my ego isn't that sensitive or attached.... but thank you VERY much for your commentary. I agree that meeting heroes can sometimes be a negative experience. When I tell you that Bernard was nothing short of angelic...you can take me at my word.

  • Great story. My first bass was called Bernie and my newest bass is Bernie 2, he's an inspiration for us all

  • Outstanding!!! one of the best post I have seen on you tube! Mastering a technique like that is priceless.

  • @soundvapor And murder on your fingernail.... lol. Seriously.. thank you. I do however take greater care not to split or otherwise damage my right index fingernail... or else I'm screwed for about 5 days before it start to grow back. Fake nails don't feel or sound the same....lol.

  • That's keeping it alive - beautifully done - thanks for demonstrating the skill and what it takes to make it look effortless.

  • @Lzzao Thank you.... key words.. LOOK effortless.. lol. that definitely took some effort and dedication. Learning a totally foreign technique can be an overwhelming obstacle.. especially when you're learning it directly from the source.... But I'm glad you appreciated and enjoyed the video...

  • Sorry folks, It's been a busy start to my summer...Thanks to EVERYONE for your comments. Keep Bernard's legacy alive !!!

  • Good work, I have always wanted to take up Bass and because of this I am going to go out and buy one. Chic and Bernard are great and if I could just play along with him on record one day like you...that would be sweet. Keep up the good work brother,

  • @seeker242 Thank you VERY much. I'm glad I could provide some inspiration for you by posting a video about MY inspiration. Go ahead bro.. buy a bass.. have fun... and hopefully we'll get to see YOU on here playing along with a Chic song.

  • Real Sweet!

  • outstanding! thanks for posting this!

  • Superb. From a bass player here too mate. Love it! Thanks for sharing your Chic story and the technique with us.

  • Man, I enjoyed that! From one bass player to another; you have great feel and soul. Those double stops and sixteenths were just perfect. You just brought home to me that I don't get to play enough funk these days. Thanks a million for the video. Peace and respect from Ireland.

    Mike.

  • I was wondering how to get that muted upstroke! Thanks man for your explanation-

  • thanks for insight chic is 1 of my fav bands

  • Sweet!

  • nice

  • fabulous sounds and a really neat story to go with it ... thanks for sharing that

  • @markz133 Thanks a lot.. it was my pleasure to share one of my favorite memories...

  • Is chucking technique is to use hand to mute and use thumb for picking? thank you

  • @lolipopo0007 Not exactly.... mute slightly with the palm of your hand.. and use your index finger for the picking.. I'm holding my finger and my thumb together as if I was using an actual pick..

  • Great playing! It made me want to get up and dance. I loved the sound of your bass and your rythm. Thanks for sharing and posting the video. :-)

  • @fritzkr9 thanks.. you need to post a video of you dancing now....lol....

  • Great Job Chris.

  • @Fusongs THANKS !!!

  • Thanks a lot for the technique demonstration! I had the notes but wasn't sure how to play (with pick or without) I'll give this a try!

  • @lesbisaillons You're welcome.. I'd love to see a video of you doing it... please share...

  • Your a class player! Great groove.. Thanks for that

  • @mickjcreedon thank you.. that means a lot to me. In an age of blinding technique and chops.. it feels good to just groove and make people wanna dance... You are most welcome !!!

  • You have the funk bro ....

  • man, that was great! Sounds better the that guy Jerry Barnes Chic's current bass player.

  • @rhard007 Wow.. I almost don't want to say thank you because I hate using the word BETTER when it comes to music. Everyone has their own interpretation of something. But I believe that your statement is an honest compliment and not a shot at Jerry, who's a fantastic player. So thank you VERY VERY much. I will say however that I find it a bit curious that until I posted my video, Jerry was using a double thumbing technique on this song. Now all of a sudden.. he's chucking. Makes me wonder.. lol..

  • @megavega4 .. Don't want to be hate on Jerry B, but Nile should have asked someone like Marcus Miller or Victor Wooten -my personal choice. As a teenager, many, many, many years ago, I wanted to be either Nile Rodgers or Ernie Isley, I switched hourly, depending what was blowing my mind at that time. But Chic's music, especially Savoir Faire, is still my favorite tune of all time ..And I still can't get that Chord intro right...!!!! Take care.. keep jammin...

  • @rhard007 Savoir Faire.. ahhhhhh.. Nile played his ASS off on that track.. It's a shame that people slept on Chic's musical ability and wrote them off as a disco band. I could listen to each album start to finish and be inspired to either dance or grab my bass... or both ... What an amazing band !!!

  • i wish i had a good bass huitar and i wish i had talent.

  • Great rendition dude. The BEST I've heard yet. Bernard is STILL missed.

  • Masterpiece, man ! I've been training on this intro for 6 months and I can't master the chucking technique. I use the double-thumb, and I only get some results now...

    Keep on bassing, bro !

    Fred

  • absolutely killer. Bernard is still one of the best bass players ever. excellent playing.

  • Beautiful feel and sound! Love it!

  • Great work... I had the pleasure of meeting Bernard in Brussels. He was a true gentleman and one of the best if not the best bassplayer ever. May God bless Bernard and his family.

  • nice video, added to favourites.

can you make another video with the details of the bassline with a closeup on both hands? it would be a great help to newbies like me. thanks.

  • @prosun86 Thanks for the compliment. I can try to do another video. But I encourage you to use your ears. I can give you a roadmap to follow. The line is mainly based on a C octave pattern. I'm hammering a Bb and a C on the G string (3rd and 5th frets) and a C on the A string (3rd fret). The notes the ascend are Ab, A and Bb. Then I play a short octave pattern on Bb.

The chucking technique is the hardest part, not the notes. Just go slow....

  • @megavega4 whoa thanks for th e instruction i used to play this line with just index middle, quite tricky n challengiing i d say but so is ur technique ,thx a lot cus i m an edwards fan :D

  • I like!!

  • @LadyT357 Thanks !!

  • Fantastic Video! Exactly what I was looking for! I have a question. Ive started experimenting with this technique, but I am finding the main problem is I cant seem to seem to get sufficient volume from the technique. Is this how it should be? Should I need to turn up my amp louder when using this technique?

    Thanks again

  • @bassistnickwebster I'm not sure if it's a volume things as much as it's an EQ thing. Bernard always had a generous amount of low mids as a part of his sound. I'd try boosting your EQ in those frequencies.

    Thanks for the props... !!!

  • Great story you're privelidged guy, love your playing the technigue sounds perfect, however the version is not note perfect, maybe it's not meant to be

  • @owncompany Thanks a lot for your praise. Yeah, I'm aware that there are some parts that are not note perfect. I was more concentrating on getting the opening part note for note because it showcased the chucking technique rather than getting the other sections perfect. You have a keen ear my friend... lol. Thanks again for commenting...

  • @megavega4

Hi, I feel bad for making my point because in fact it was watching your video that inspired me to go away and check out this bass line myself, it's just this peice has intrigued me, so using an old Tascam Cdgt I slowed the whole thing down to find out exactly what is going on, however I am still to perfect this myself. Best wishes.

  • @owncompany ... Oh man please... don't even feel bad. We are all up here to learn and share... well. most of us.... lol. As I said at the end of my video... I welcome ALL comments... praise... critique...

Best wishes to you as well...

  • You have been the closest to perfecting Bernard Edwards style that i have seen, keep up the good work. I'm sure you have Leon Sylvers down too with Dynasty, Here I am, another great bass line.

  • @alembicfunkbass Actually, I never learned that line. Gotta put that on my list of things to learn in 2011.... lol...

  • I just happend to stumble onto the chucking style when i first started playing bass because i could never hold the pick. You can do so much more with the finger tips and longer fingernails. I noticed that a lot of bass players forget to use the muting technique along with the chuck style to make it complete for a lot of Bernard's work.

  • @alembicfunkbass I love the fact that you're so observant. You are correct.. Bernard's style revolved around short notes when he was grooving. A lot of players hold the notes too long and it takes away from the funk. He also did a lot of left hand muting, in terms of finger pressure. It would take months to totally dissect his style and explain each component. You just have to listen to him non stop and soak up the vibe.

  • Thanks for sharing your story about Bernard Edwards technique, a lot of bass players have been trying to figure it out. Bernard will be missed.

  • @alembicfunkbass Yanno... t's just a testimony to his greatness that 30 plus years later... people are STILL trying to figure it out... much like Jaco's first album. You are most welcome. It was my pleasure to share...indeed he will be missed.

  • I'd don't know if it's been mentioned before, but there's a video on youtube call "Power Station: John Taylor and Bernard Edwards", where you can see

Bernard doing his "chucking" style very well.

One of the the down sides of the style though is that I read somewhere that Bernard's fingers would get pretty messed up (bleeding etc) when on tour and

    playing a lot.

  • @ocean4315 Yes, I've seen that before. My only gripe with that clip is that it's a "lip sync" type of thing. He's not really playing it live. But you're correct in that you can see his technique. That's probably the best visual presentation of it... I've also heard the stories about his fingers getting messed up too.. just like Stevie Ray Vaughn used to Krazy Glue the skin from his finger tips back on in the middle of a gig.. hey.. you do what you have to do for the love of the music...

  • "It's a P.H.D. course in melodic grooving and not getting in the way."

Perfectly stated....hip story...hip playing...and very inspirational. Thanks for sharing with us!

  • @bumbaluv thank you !! You are most welcome....

  • Amazing story! Thanks for breaking it down:) I have been playing guitar for 30 years now, but I have been moved to play bass recently by Paul S. Denman, John Paul Jones, John Taylor, Pino Palladino, and B.E. Everything he did was amazing-I really appreciate you helping to demystify Edwards' technique on this tune. I have literally started playing bass a week ago after picking up a beautiful '77 natural black-guard MusicMan Stingray on eBay. I can't stop learning B.E. grooves! Thanks again:)

  • @garbeaj It was an amazing experience.. trust me. The story is just a diluted version of what I felt. There's no way I could ever accurately relate what's in my heart. You mentioned a pretty amazing list of players there. And 3 Stingray player's, no doubt leading you to your purchase. I'm pretty sure B.E. played a '77 too... I'm glad I could help shed some light on the mystery for you. Learn EVERYTHING he played with Chic. It's a P.H.D. course in melodic grooving and not getting in the way.

  • @megavega4 I can't help learning from B.E. It is just too fun! I had a similar experience with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. I spent an hour or so with him about a month before he passed and it was the most amazing experience. I was 18 (and I'm 38 now) and it only served to keep the fire burning to put my heart in the notes. Bass is so fun-controlling the rhythm, the harmony and even the melody-people think you are in the backseat, but you are really the dude driving the car! Keep on groovin'!

  • @garbeaj .. wow.. SRV huh? That's guitar royalty right there.

I agree with you about driving.. except I don't mind driving from the backseat. I kinda like it when the bass drops out and people scratch their heads like. huh? What just happened? It reaffirms my belief that understated is best sometimes....

  • @megavega4 Absolutely...but you are still the guy driving-especially when you decide to turn off the engine! Paul S. Denman is the master at the understated and perfect bassline...very similar to B.E. but even more simplified. Sort've like the simplicity and elegance of B.B. King. I never thought anything could be so simple and cool until I heard J.J. Cale-even more stripped down. Deconstruction is a really great tool in music and art in general:)

  • Nice job Chris!

  • @TheMemphisTrain HEYYY!!!!! Thanks a lot bro!

  • My favorite bassline ever!! VERY NICE JOB!

  • Been a guitar player for a couple of years. I've had a bass guitar for over a year now and play it some times, just some fooling around or simple songs and I never really cared much until I heard this tune a couple of months ago, I was like "What the funk? I want play that!" This video seems to be very helpful, thanks.

  • @IbanezFreysi Glad I could help!! Bass is a whole different head space, glad to see that a guitarist is exploring it..... Good luck !!!

  • Thanks for this great video and touching story. You are an inspiration for a beginner like me. I've always wanted to play bass after hearing this song as a child. Love it still. Yours, a Norwegian bass player:)

  • Well done fella by far the nearest to B.E. I have come across*****

  • @iano740 wow... THANK YOU! Considering the thousands of bassists out there who play his lines, that comes as HIGH praise.

  • Blown away man! but how long did you have to practice to get that?

BTW loved your legato on the quarter notes you got the beat man!

the late great Mr Edwards lives on!

  • @gary0768 Thank you VERY much. It took me a couple of weeks to get the flow down. Yes he does live on... thanks for recognizing....

  • bro you totally dominated that track! bernard forever!

  • @koolfraser thank you.. indeed.. Bernard Forever..

@thakos.. that's very touching for you to tell me that I'm an inspiration.. especially after viewing a video tribute to MY inspiration... thank you VERY much....

  • Thank you for the insight and the touching story of how you met the man! As for your performance - mistake and all: Wow! Feel, touch and groove! Nailed it!

  • @Zauriel23 .. Thank you. It was a decade and a half ago and I'm still touched deep inside every time I think about it. I literally get goosebumps when I think about shaking his hand... about him playing my bass..about the whole experience. And you just put his entire concept of playing bass into perspective.. Feel.. Touch.. and Groove. Chops were not even on his radar.. although this bassline proved that he wasn't a slouch in that area either....lol.. Thank you again.....

  • I've been trying to learn this riff for a long, long time now. and couldn't ever get a carbon copy sound...and now I know why. I'm going to get it down now. thank you.

  • @atypicalmystery You and me and rest of the world... it's nearly impossible to play unless you know what he's doing... as I said.. this song was my nemesis for over 15 years.. that's a long time to suffer...lol...

Anyway, PLEASE put up a reply video when you get it down. I'd love to see it..

  • That was excellent! I've been a Chic fan since the beginning and you did a fine job! Thank you for sharing your story, too. You're very blessed to have met Bernard before he passed.

  • thx Chris you hit it perfectly.

  • Kudge.. thank you very much. I'd rather have feel than chops any day. It might not impress as many people but it will be around a lot longer.

Shells.. perfection? Wow.. thank you !!

Beastie... thank you. It was indeed a blessing to have spent any amount of time in his presence. For a guy who was not large in stature, his vibe was enormous. It was my pleasure to pass on my experience and to find out that the person who inspired me was down to earth and humble.

  • Megavega, thank you for taking the time to share that cool run. Quality with feel.

  • hi

i want to start playing bass.

    thanks to people like you.

    greatz from steven (belgium)

  • @stevie72006 Wow.. thank you. That's high praise. Glad you found inspiration in me talking about mine. My best advice would be to keep your ears, eyes and mind open to all styles of music. A note is a note, regardless of what style you're playing.

  • Can you send me the backing track cos i cant find a backing track with out the bass part :D

  • @introstv I don't know how I can do that. I created the track using MIDI. I would advise you to use your ear and figure out the chords. That would make a great ear training exercise. It's in the key of C minor.

  • Whoa, that's really great and interesting. So this is THE truth behind this bassline. Thanks for solving this mistery for me/us. First I tried some double-thumping, didn't help. Gonna do this right now. You're a precise and dedicated bass player. Cheers, S.

  • @Listendudeok Thanks man. Trust me, I had to hold myself back from drooling like an idiot when I saw Bernard play this. Jerry Barnes (Chic's current bass player used the double thumb technique when I saw them back in 1997. Ironically, he now does the chucking technique, mysteriously after I put my video up... hmm)

But anyway, I would love it if you would put up a video showing your version. I'm always interested in hearing other Bernard enthusiasts... Thanks again for the props.

  • Goodness Gracious me. Unbelievably good.

I know this bass line is a hard one to master because of the tempo and, now having seen your video, how to get the sound right. My former neighbor tried to play it (well before the youtube era) and didn't have a clue how to get it. No surprise, considering the unique style Nard developed.

I seriously hope you'll put up some more songs, especially Funny Bone, that is such an awesome track.

Again, fabulous video and mega cudos to ya man.

  • @beedebee2000 WOW @ Funny Bone.. you're diggin DEEP in the crates for that one. Great album cut. I just moved and my studio is not set up yet. But I will put up more vids once I get my stuff together. Glad I could help unravel the mystery. Be blessed....

  • thanks for sharing your story and for the wonderful Master class. I simple adore that song and you make it look like it s possible to actually play it thanks again from

    Chile.

  • @pornis90 You are most welcome. Everything is possible if you take the time to make it so. Go slow.. and keep me posted on your progress. Blessings....

  • great playing!!! and cool story!

  • @HH003 Thanks !!!

  • Thanks for the nice story and the technique lesson, I'm more of a rock player, but I love Chic basslines and I'm keen to give this "chucking" thing a go. Thanks again!

  • @ROONTANG Rock.. Hip Hop.. R&B... etc.. it's all music. No boundries... I actually use the chucking when I play rock if I'm too lazy or forgetful to reach for a pick. But thanks for the recognition. Now get to chucking ... lol. Let me know how it goes....

  • Comment removed

  • @tomthefunky .. Hey Tom.. no.. I had NO idea that Bernard went to Erasmus... I'm not sure how it was when he went there... nor do I have an knowledge of it being a school for the gifted or being one of the best public high schools in the country... lol. it's actually in a pretty rough neighborhood... it was REALLY bad in the 80's... although I believe that James D TRAIN went there... and he can sing his ass off... but thanks for the info on Nard... much appreciated....

  • Excellent Chris. I never realized how great a bass player Bernard was until I watch him on a video. I always wanted to know how he made that bass sound. You hit it.

So you use your thumb and index finger? Keep on keeping on. Love your playing.

  • @donejohnson1958 .. My thumb is not really involved in making the sound. I'm only using it to simulate the act of holding a pick. My index finger is actually striking the string... and I'm muting VERY slightly with my palm.

Thanks for the compliment.. You should really dig deep into Chic's entire discography.. Bernard weaves his way countless tunes in a way that just grabs your ear... the master of taste and groove...

  • Great job,very well done and inspiring.thanks.

  • Very excellent vid, Chris ! Loved your explanation of the technique, and also the experience meeting the man himself. Respect to your attention to detail.

Q: Do you have longer fingernails on your right hand?

  • @DancingSpiderman Yes... I keep the fingernail on my right index finger slightly longer than the rest... Thanks for the praise.. I'm glad you enjoyed it....

  • Greetings from Queens. That was outta sight, megavega. Nard would be beaming with pride if he saw you play. I can tell he means the world to you and I know how you feel. I feel the same way towards Duck Dunn. Only difference is that I met Duck and he was an asshole. I'm not kidding. He was a total asshole. Anyway, did you know there is a songbook of twenty Nile and Nard songs for guitar and bass? It's only available in the U.K. I'm so pissed. Do you know anyone that might have it?

  • @tomthefunky

Thanks a lot man. I'm sorry to hear that Duck Dunn behaved that way. I always feel like legends should be humble.

Yes, I heard about that book. I'm pretty sure you can find one on Ebay... I haven't looked but I'd be hard pressed to think that there's not SOME way to get one here.

  • @megavega4: It's not on Ebay or Amazon. What a drag. Anyway, I just learned this song (I'm a guitarist) and I'm having fun playing along. I like how you lay out before you come in. It gives me a chance to practice Niles part. Are there any other Chic tunes you know where you can do the same thing as this video? I wonder if you know Funny Bone? Dance Dance Dance? How about Upside Down?

  • @tomthefunky Hey man... I have TRYING to get another video together for Dance Dance Dance and I'm Coming Out.. and maybe My Feet Keep Dancing.. time constraints is preventing me from doing that right now.. I'm a perfectionist.... lol.. stay tuned tho....

  • @megavega4: I can dig it. I can't wait.

  • Very nice indeed, thank you for the video!!! Need is the mother of invention, some say, so when I wanted to play this part and didn´t know about this technique, I actually learned to play it with my fingers. I think it doesn´t sound bad at all, but when I see all the talent there is out there, playing bass, I think I would be ashamed to say my way of playing this bass line sounds good at all...great video.

  • @lalbruiz

Hey man. NEVER be ashamed of what you play. I think most of the bass playing community attempted to play this in a way that felt comfortable to them. As I said, being into Chic as much as I was, I didn't find out how the line was played till YEARS later. I would be interested to hear how you play it.

  • Brilliant job & a nice story. Kudos to you!

    Many thanks

  • this is awesome. for serious

  • ricksawriter1019

great bro!!! CHUCKIN" Cool Man, Chuckin & Pluckin" what a combo... I have a bass and it never sounds like that :( but you keep the funk rollin" Quite Cool.

  • Good stuff ma man good stuff. You lucky guy, u actually met the legendary Bernard....wow!! Anyway you do it so well if he was here i know he would be really proud. Anyway any budding bass player out there...... start with Bernard Edwards then progress to Bernard Edwards.... I think you get my drift.

Btw Vega, which model of the Music man stingray was he using ? anybody know?

  • @anthony77 He was using a late 70's model.. natural finish.. maple fretboard. I believe John Taylor got the bass after Bernard died. I'm sure it's in good hands being used properly...

  • man you are awesome, thanks a lot for the technique ! :D

  • great great great great!

  • Good job bro.

  • This is seriously the best bass guitar tutorial I've seen on all of YouTube. Nothing better than hearing what the late Bernie Edwards himself had to say!

  • @bob51bob I am SO sorry. I don't know how I missed your entry on my post. I have been busy AND moving, so I guess I just overlooked this. Considering all of the tutorials on here, I am truly humbled by your praise. DKMarlowe has a bunch of videos on here that are even more detailed than mine ( plus he has better lighting). You should check him out. To answer your question.. yes I do give lessons. Where are you located?

  • thanks I too stared playing because of Le freak my first song I ever played on the bass> this song here all time classic and favorate I too will practice this> Im from bridgeport. Do you give lessions???

  • thanks I too stared playing because of Le freak my first song I ever played on the bass> this song here all time classic and favorate I too will practice this> Im from bridgeport. Do you give lessions???

  • hello, i'm Rafael, from Brazil.

Liked too much the video... since i started to play the bass and listened this lines i didin't know how to do it; now i know, thanks to ya... sorry for bad english :P

    god bless you!

  • you are really good! this is such a cool bassline. i showed it to my husband who is also a bassplayer. thank you! and the story was cool=)

  • Quality!... great story too!

  • Hey that was a great insght to Bernards style you really nailed friend, like to see more of the Bernard line cheers Tomas. I take you know the story about Nard MM bass he gave to John Taylor..

  • Sweeet!!! That was great, spot on. Lucky you to meet a great person like Bernard, chic always will be the best.

  • Hey megavega4, this is really great to learn, thanx for uploading, on how to teach the technique for this bassline, i use to hear it all the time and think if he was usin a pick or not, even in the videos looking at his right hand to see whether it was his finger lol, but from what you have shown peeps, its str8 forward as long as your practice it, nice goin and thanx a lot

  • Bravo

  • everytime i hear this it makes me wanna keep playin harder and harder, thanks for teachin me chris - daniel chud

  • @ihopethis1 Hey Dan... long time no speak. sorry for the late reply. What are you up to? Teaching you was my pleasure... hopefully you're putting everything you learned to use.

  • it's so clean, awesome job, I love it and thanks for sharin the story ;o)!

  • For future reference, alot less talk'n and alot more playing.

  • @shjtyu

Hmmm... you think? It seemed like everyone enjoyed my story and my explanation. I respect your opinion.. but I think you stand alone on that one. Oh well.. can't please everyone.

I think his voice is sexy. you're just jealous.

  • I'm really sorry folks... I've been INSANELY busy lately... but I just want to say thank you to everyone who was kind enough to leave me feedback and commentary on this post. I'm glad to pass on some inspiration that was bestowed upon me by the master. Keep it funky...

  • Great rendition; very impressive.

  • you too are a generous an' humble dude. thanks for this inspired post, bro'.

    peace

  • my brother u have got it down 2 a science. i am a bass player that also had the privilege of hanging with Bernard often. he taught me the same technique. Niles younger brother played guitar with me which is how i met them. i'm still in touch with Nile i am going 2 pass this on 2 him.

  • @bodaciousbass

Thanks you SO much. Since Bernard mentioned to me that he didn't get out much and socialize.. I guess you and I are part of a small blessed group of people who benefited from his humility and love for music. I would be MOST appreciative if you did pass this on to Nile... if nothing more than to show him the impact that Chic has had on the music world...

  • Hey Southwst.. it sounds great.. but I was hoping for a video of YOU playing.. It's always nice to watch the music being played. Perhaps you can repost with a live video... Other than that... you definitely have the funk.

  • Chris have listen to several bass players from Chic, they don't come close to Bernard's original version...yours come close...lol you need to get with Niles for the next tour...you do Bernard proud R.I.P.

  • @MIKE54U

Mike.. wow.. thanks a lot. THAT would be the dream of a lifetime come true... SO... ONCE AGAIN... lol.. if ANYONE reading this knows Nile.. PLEASE send him a link... I would be forever indebted....

  • Nuggins.. thank you. With all the bassists who've attempted this line, that comes as high praise.

Osama.. I don't know about 50 years. It took me a few weeks to get the feel under my fingers and maybe a few more to get it just right. Just take it slow. Remember, the more strings you use, the harder it is because you'll have the potential for more unwanted notes to ring out. It's best executed on a 4 string, you can get away with doing it on a 5. You might be asking for trouble on a 6.

  • I'm so sorry folks. Between work and not having internet service for a week, I've once again been neglectful in replying.

Stevie.. you might have something there. I guess I'd have to get clearance from Nile.. but thanks for the love..

Ocean.. I FEEL lucky and blessed to have met him. When I saw him he used the chucking on a couple of tunes, but most of the time it looked like he was just digging in hard with his fingertips. He also had a very light touch on some tunes that were more agile.

  • Fantastic!! I love all BE's lines. Truly THE Master and a great rendition of it from you. Much respect from the UK. If I practise for the next 50 years I might get somewhere close.

  • Very, VERY good. That's the closest I've heard to the original. Best wishes from the UK.
