Pounding the hell out of your subs isn't going to make it difficult to hear voices, unless you know the most miraculous baritone alive who speaks from 28-50hz. You'll only notice a loss in lower end sounds, but even then, most naturally occurring low notes are usually followed by tremendous vibrations (thunder for example) so your ability to perceive these low notes will be BARELY noticeable.

BTW, SPL levels are not necessarily a function of Watts in. Indeed, a Marshal head only delivers around 100W. However, the speaker cabs are very efficient, and the SPL will drown out all but the loudest crash cymbals. (Bass amps are a different animal, as bass frequencies require much more power to shake the ground...they can be in the KW class just like this guy's car amps). My guitarist has three full stacks, one with twelves and the other two with tens. Trust me, they will deafen you.

You know, I am a metal muscian and have been all of my life (too many years). Yet I have very good hearing, because I always used and still use hearing protection, even when I was a kid. 33 years of crash cymbals and Marshal stacks cranked to '11' will kill most ears if one is not careful.
So here is my question, why would one build these audio bombs that will kill your hearing by the time you are 30? Yes, subs are great, but 4 X 15 with Kw amps? Gods this is not a stage, foks!

But just because someone has a huge car audio system doesn't automatically mean they are going to be deaf by 30. Like you, some people into car audio also value their hearing and wear ear protection. In the SPL competitions I've been to, everyone competing is required to wear hearing protection. So just because we build systems that can damage our hearing doesn't mean we aren't concerned
Well, actually I found this whilst searching for a video fof a custom bass guitar cab for a friend of mine. I looked at it out of curiosity. Actually, 47 is the age, and yes, when I was a teen, I was playing drums as I do now in a metal band, and yes, I used hearing protection because I wanted to still be able to hear at 30. A 20 inch power crash will make your ears bleed when double crashed, especially with todays alloys. Enjoy your hobby, but all I am sayings is be careful.
@amourdutigre not to mention that the high's and mid's in these systems will kill your hearing way faster than any low bass... don't get me wrong... if the system's bass alone puts out 140-180 db's, as most in competitions and whatnot do, then yea, one's hearing starts to go away... but the high's are the real culprits here. :o

@Sydflip All the best audio brands usually can't be bought in stores, they have to be bought from special dealers or exclusively online. Like Yukhui's AAs for example, can only be bought from an online dealer, and they are some top notch subs. My friend has a 15" AA Havoc that has taken over 2kw daily, and they're only rated for around 1kw IIRC.

So here is my question, why would one build these audio bombs that will kill your hearing by the time you are 30? Yes, subs are great, but 4 X 15 with Kw amps? Gods this is not a stage, foks!

Sorry, if you're honestly concerned about your question the answer is simple - people like attention. I'm not saying everyone does this solely for attention, but that's always part of it. Many find car audio as a hobby, and often as a competitive sort of entertainment. As you may or may not remember, you weren't concerned about yourself at 30 when you were in your teenage years.

@amourdutigre Part2- You did things because they were fun and cool and that was the thing to do at the time. But just because someone has a huge car audio system doesn't automatically mean they are going to be deaf by 30. Like you, some people into car audio also value their hearing and wear ear protection. In the SPL competitions I've been to, everyone competing is required to wear hearing protection. So just because we build systems that can damage our hearing doesn't mean we aren't concerned

Well, actually I found this whilst searching for a video fof a custom bass guitar cab for a friend of mine. I looked at it out of curiosity. Actually, 47 is the age, and yes, when I was a teen, I was playing drums as I do now in a metal band, and yes, I used hearing protection because I wanted to still be able to hear at 30. A 20 inch power crash will make your ears bleed when double crashed, especially with todays alloys. Enjoy your hobby, but all I am sayings is be careful.

@amourdutigre not to mention that the high's and mid's in these systems will kill your hearing way faster than any low bass... don't get me wrong... if the system's bass alone puts out 140-180 db's, as most in competitions and whatnot do, then yea, one's hearing starts to go away... but the high's are the real culprits here. :o

Pussy? Believe what you will, but I have been a drummer for over 30 years. I have played in bands for 25, and currently play in a black metal gig with some excellent guitar and key cats. My crash cymbals are designed for maximum volume in order to cut through hundreds of watts of overdriven guitar amps and screaming keyboards. If I did not use hearing protection, I would be stone deaf by now. Call me pussy if you want, but I enjoy hearing the sounds of life...

I bet you don't even understand the physics of building a subwoofer. So please, until you can actually do it yourself, don't complain about others trying to make a subwoofer for fun.

@Sydflip All the best audio brands usually can't be bought in stores, they have to be bought from special dealers or exclusively online. Like Yukhui's AAs for example, can only be bought from an online dealer, and they are some top notch subs. My friend has a 15" AA Havoc that has taken over 2kw daily, and they're only rated for around 1kw IIRC.
