  • @edjbk the pickups are different. And the vintage tone selector ( or whatever its called)

  • Do you know how Hooky get's that distinct bass sound? What effect does he use?

  • @VoxJoxx He used an Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal a bit in Joy Division and a lot more in New Order.

  • Dude, I love your work. Bu this is a 4001, not a 4003

  • @foarks No, it's definitely a 4003 - I should know, because it's mine!

  • @okra552 Where's the big hunk of metal over the pickup?

  • @foarks I took it off - like 99% of 4003 owners do! It seriously gets in the way of playing....

  • @okra552 But it's so cool :(

  • @okra552

what is the diff between the 4001 and 4003 models, besides the truss rod system

  • you should make a whole channel dedicated to joy division/new order bass lines

  • @cheapthrillsss Well, I'd certainly like to do more, but I'm a bit disappointed that this second JD medley only has 8,800 views, whereas the first one has 35,000 - and this one is the best, in my opinion!

  • @okra552

I see you're point, it might be worth doing bass tab lessons or something.. There's a serious lack of it all on here.

  • @okra552

I agree, it is the best one. I love it!

  • your bass is awesome and play just as good as Peter Hook.

  • Great job, man. Joy Division have really nice bass lines.

What tabs did you use for play "Sound of Music"?

  • @1DoctorDoom1 Thanks. I didn't use any tabs - after listening for 30 years it becomes easy to work out :)

  • komakino bass tab! :D

  • @adaltoxikboy You don't need it! Just look closely and you'll figure it out! Oh, alright, here are the notes: first riff (slow part) is D-C-C-A. Second (more complicated) part : A-C-D-F-D / A-C-D-F-D / A-C-D-F-G-G-G-A-G-F-D - in the 'A-C-D' part you only pick the A, the C and D you hammer on - it's quite tricky.

  • @okra552 thanks :D

  • Very good stuff! thanks for posting this :)

  • Thanks to remind our these greats bass line of P. Hook, thank u from heart.

  • @cockxl You're welcome, mate.

  • Its not about the pick, its about what sound you get. I play with a pick because I want to, but I can use my fingers just fine aswell.

Theres no rules to making music. If you can sound awesome by hitting your bass against the wall, then theres nothing wrong with that.

Be a bit more openminded people.

  • @HawK047 Totally agree with you, man

  • great job. what effect do u use?

  • @Skartasss I don't use any effects - just plugged directly into the amp, with gain cranked a bit to give it some clipping and bite.

  • good playing friend keep up the great bass lines from one of the greatest band joy division

  • is that a ventures jazzmaster I see in the background?

  • @feildmouse It's a jazzmaster, yeah - well-spotted! Nothing to do with the Ventures, though...

  • Dude...I wanna start a tribute band with ya! Excellent! Check out my Joy Division vids when ya get a moment. :)

  • @ChrisCarter1983 Checked out your excellent videos and left comments - good work, sir! Would seriously love to be in a JD cover band with you - but as I live in Japan finding rehearsal time might be a bit tricky ;-)

  • Fucking flawless bro!

  • @Pissedman Thanks, mate.

  • everyone bitches about picks, but to me ricks are made for picks lol.

  • @SWF90

I know - John Paul Jones even used a pick on quite a few Zeppelin songs. Achilles Last Stand, Wanton Song, and Immigrant song come to mind immediately.

Pick on bass = driving rock music

  • Hi there, Very nice bass and sounds lovely. Massive fan of Hooky and it's nice to see someone playing accurate renditions of his bass lines. I will be looking at your playing so I can practice on my Gibson T-Bird IV plus the infamous Clone Theory Chorus pedal. Keep up the good work.

    Regards

    Gordon

  • Thanks for the nice comments, mate...

  • Nice! but what amp do you recommend to use with a Rick? I like the sound you use here...

  • Thanks. I'm using a Marshall MBB30 here - that's a pretty small amp, and no use for live, but you can get a pretty good Rick sound on it without waking up the neighbours...

  • you lucky bastard :(

  • Er...thanks!

  • You've got the ric I want AND the tele I want :0

How do you afford all this anyway?

Does it just build up over time?

Or are you rich off your ass?

  • Good job the video doesn't show my Gibson SG Standard and Rickenbacker 620, eh?

No, not rich: all of the Fenders you see there are 'made in Japan' ones, so in the $600-$1,000 range, plus I'm an old codger, so yeah, it builds up. But hey, I couldn't afford the Ric 4003 until I was 40, even though I've wanted one since I was 14...

  • Each to his own - but that's the Rick sound. May I suggest you invest in a new pair of ears?

  • Awesome tone and nicely played. Lovely collection of guitars too ! Cheers.

  • any1 know of a tab for komakino?

  • he's playing it. just look at it

  • will you all be quiet about bloody picks and enjoy the video?

  • I did not know that the "Insight" and "24 hours" bass lines were that complex, I have a new found respect for them now! Thanx!

  • sound so nice

  • love that motorik exercise one bassline with the psychadelic noises in the backdrop

  • rickenbaker it's hard to play?

  • No, quite easy - you can set the action pretty low on a Rick. Some people might not like the varnished fretboard or the wideness of the neck, though...

  • got enough guitars there? lovely bass :D

  • Mostly cheapies, though....made in Japan Fenders and an Epiphone Les Paul....

    ...but I did acquire a Rickenbacker 620 recently ;-)

  • rickenbackers hate picks

  • Playing a Rickenbacker without a pick is like driving a Porsche at 30mph....

    ;-)

  • Playing finger style obviously has its place, but not when you're doing Joy Division songs. Playing them without a pick would sound ridiculous....

  • haha

  • God, I'm sick these pick haters.

Joy Division sounds like crap without a pick.

  • Rickenbacker's love picks what are you talking about? Especially when Entwistle and Squire used them. :P

  • Entwistle=didnt play a ric

  • Yes he did.

  • He experimented with Fenders and Rics back in the 1960's.

  • I wouldnt associate rics with him then if he had ONE back in the 60's

  • But, he still used them.

  • Also, he used more than ONE Rickenbacker. He used multiple 4001s and 4005s. He also used a Rickenbacker 4001/8 8-string bass in the 1970s.

  • He did both.

  • you're the best !!

  • like usual...great

  • thanks for your video, may I know what is your amp and the settings?

  • Yeah, the amp is a little Marshall MBB 30, which has a 'modern' channel and a 'classic' channel - I used the latter, with bass up full, and treble at three-quarters, plus a lick of gain to get a bit of overdrive. No pedals involved.

  • You bought me a Rickenbacker! (and Paul McCartney too) :) ...If only I had the money.

Post more! and nice Fender Jazz Bass. I got the same exact one. Well, it's a Squire.

    Thanks

  • The Fender Jazz is a Japanese one - very beautiful bass, second only to the mighty Rickenabacker!

    More videos soon....

  • Sweet.

  • Man! You da man! Clean up your undies over there!

  • Man, they were all spot on! I especially liked Insight! Cheers!

  • awesome guitars man

  • Nice job, man. I own a bass myself and I've been been playing for 4 months now. I love playing Joy Division songs, especially Twenty-Four Hours. I also want to get a Rickenbacker in a year or so.

  • these are perfect.

i'm getting a bass soon and i'm going to use your videos as a key learning tool to learn these bass lines.

thank you so much for your service :)

  • My pleasure! Thanks for your kind comments, and good luck with the bass. If you have a spare $2,000, get a Rickenbacker ;-)
