  • Back in the day this game was as good as putting together FF,Skyrim,Fallout New Vegas and Mass effect together.

Thats how much the game was ahead of its time easilyyyy the best game on Sega.

They really should do a remake of the first 4 Phantasy star games for PC and have all the dungeons in it like the first one similar music and maybe some straigth off this game.

They should also make a remake of the early FF Games up to FF7 IMO.

  • @DRock7977 Uh they sort of did remake the early FF games for both DS and PSP, at least up to FFV.

  • Revolutionary, a defining RPG. One of the best ever, hands down, that eventually led me to discover Final Fantasy. Built so good, it stands the ultimate test of time, 24 years later I'd still play the hell out of it. (omfg - 24 years ago?!)

  • @omffgusernames I never played it before until afew years ago, amazing. Not even boring to play, it's like a fine wine. And I have played older games that are just boring. I started playing this went outside the walls next to the sea then died 1 hit off the seaman monster. And it said your quest has ended about 3 minutes after it started XD.

  • @omffgusernames Yep ive completed it 2 times last year hehe and i managed to do it without cheating in the Baya Mayal second time.

  • how the hell did they fit this game into the cartridge it's so long and epic

  • This game and every game in the Phantasy Star series are my favorite games, EVER. I grew up with them and own them on almost every system I own. XBOX 360 Sega Collection PS Universe for 360, PS2 Sega Collection (Even bought the Japanese PS2) for the remakes of 1 and 2 and the Phantasy Star collection for it) Hell, I even bought Phantasy Star 2 for my iTouch. Classic, fantastic games. Thank you for posting this!

  • Not to mention, I own all the original Cartridges from the PS1 Master System cartridge to PS4. =)

  • @CoreyisGoD Phantasy star should be played on Sega only IMO but yes amazing game the praise could never end,.

  • Most Epic game ever played for most and definetely for me

  • Machinae Supremacy should make a cover for this game.

  • @DarKSpideR99 /agree. 3:14 ++ Air castle epic theme.GG

  • @DarKSpideR99 nah, they only make heavy metal which is bleeeh.

  • @shairaptor You must be kidding? I think they'r perfect. Have you listened The Great Gianna Sisters cover?

  • @DarKSpideR99 i have, and heavy metal is definitely NOT my thing. tastes.

  • @shairaptor Respect :)

  • Can someone tell me What the fuck is FM sound?

  • @andree1991 FM sound is "frequency modulation" if I recall correctly. It made it sound much more like actual instruments instead of the beeping and tone generator type of music. It's a lot more pleasant especially in this game.

  • manly tears

  • It was for sale as the one and only 4meg cartridge back in 1988, and we believed it must have came from outer space. But what a game it was! This one was the first real Japanese RPG video game hitting the European market.

  • just got in the mail today

  • The NES may have had the better lineup overall, but where we were stuck with the fun but generic Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, Sega fans got freakin' Phantasy Star!

  • one of my fav game ever :D

  • HOLY SHIT

    This looks better than SMT!

  • Happy Console Gamer's favorite game.

  • This game rocked my childhood world.

  • Admittedly, I didn't have a Master System as a kid; I was a NES owner.

This was the game that made me jealous of the kids who owned a Sega!

  • nice! Me and my cousins spend a whole summer playing this game night and day when we were little...good times!

  • One of the few RPG's i dont like. I found the gameplay so slow, it had an awkward way of using melodies and sometimes the harmony didnt even fit with the main melody. Also the way of figuring things out to get further in the game where realy random like; you had to meet ONE guy in one of the many villages and had to answer a yes or no question with no (whats not true) to get further in the game. Also finding the hidden door in the last dungeon was so hard and unlogical.(i didnt finish this game)

  • @mirrorpiece The thing with the village doesn't seem illogical, it's based on old stuff where something lies and something tells the truth, and you have to figure out which is which. In this game it was fairly simple and it was mainly used as a way to show human's weren't welcomed, which was pretty cool.

  • This game is horrible by today's standards...but it set the standard back in the day. Thanks for the music!

  • one of the best 8bit rpg for sure

  • \m/ 1:46 = EPIC!

  • Can someone tell me the tilte of the track that starts at 3:14?

I shall hunt the internet for it then :3

  • Phantasy Star was the best RPG of it's time and Phantasy Star 2 was an awesome sequel.

Then mainstream anime had to infect the series, with loli girls and other stereotypical cliches when they decided to make Phantasy Star Online.

By far the best Phantasy Star was PS 2, followed by PS4, and then PS1.

PS3 is the bastard child of the series and a mess.. Though it did bring Wren into the series and I put Wren up there with some of the coolest RPG characters of all time.

  • ...just bought Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection on xbox 360 and can't wait to play this again and finally get to play Phantasy Star IV for the first time in my life. This collection should keep me busy for awhile.

  • It kept me busy for about 2 months, playing through all 4. Most epic time of my life.

  • hey 0:14 I haven't seen that picture before

  • The beginning was really hardcore. You better not go far from the starter city until you got more damages/hp, since if you got 3 monsters in a row you were practically dead.

  • the graphics are mind-blowing

  • Brings back memories -- one of the best games of all time!

  • Like for the Legend of Zelda, to get the right Wikipedia article, you'll want to add "_%28video_game%29" to the end of the URL. Right now it links to the series, not the game. ;)

  • Easily the best 8 bit RPG I ever played

  • i agree...phantasy star series really owns, specially phantasy star 1...i remember rune walsh from phantasy star 4, he really kicks ass...

  • Even with a plot with a lot of nonsensical things (why the hell Odin hid a bussola in the cave, when he would need it to get out? lol", the game is still amazingly amazing

    <3

  • @Omikron go ahead and play some mmo's for a few years and replay Phantasy Star. it still keeps my attention. Fantastic game

  • @Omikron

It's amazing how far ahead of its time Phantasy Star was.

  • @Omikron best 8 bit rpg ever made bro.

  • the best ever

  • One of my favourite songs from the game is missing. The song played in dungeons/towers! Nice video, though.

  • classic game that shaped my childhood,

  • I love this game.... I tried to get my friend to try it, but he said the main character looked like a hooker in a dress... then he called me gay and went home.... I hate him. Who cares what he says? I LOVE PHANASY STAR!

  • Why would he think you're gay if you like a game where the main character is a hooker in a dress? o_O

  • He called you gay, because you played with Hookers? Guess who's the real fag

  • Well, I finished listening to all the NES games at 1-60. Now on to the Master System, which should be more interesting for me because I never owned a Master System.

Phantasy Star IV is one of my favorite games on the Genesis, so I'm sure I would've loved this game, too. Great music.

  • Your venture in the SMS entries won't last very long, that's for sure. Oh, and you'll still see a bunch of NES games scattered throughout. Anyway, glad you're still enjoying the series.

  • Ah, yes, I see now how there's only a few Master System games here. Oh well. And thanks for the info on there being more NES games.

  • I never owned one myself, so that might explain the lack of entries, although I've always had the impression that the SMS library wasn't too deep.

I see you've started the SNES era, cool beans. From that point on, the series gets a little less chronological. I often went back in time, but never forward, unless I felt I had covered most of what I thought should be. Up to 400, you'll see a mish-mash of all kinds of 8-bit and 16-bit stuff. At some point, I also started covering PC games too.

  • Yeah, I noticed that your series is bouncing around consoles at the point that I'm currently at. It's all good. And that's good to know that you covered PC games, too. I'm looking forward to them!

  • If you would like to try this game and have a XBOX 360, pick up the sega genesis collection, it's an unlockable game along with several others :)

  • I do indeed have a 360. I'm more interested in buying this game with a Master System, as I'm a collector, but I think I might go ahead and buy the game you mentioned until I have the cash saved up to spend on a SMS and PS.

  • Best RPG game i ever Played.

  • Sworms the Sworms are everywhere!

  • just bought the Mega Drive Collection for my 360 =) mostly just to be able to relive these games. just turned Odin back to normal from being turned into stone (aaah, the memories of sweet childhood) PS has allways been alot better than FF!

  • Poor Nero ;_;

  • PSIII still has my favorite overall music...the opening is enough to get you into it

  • I know the game is totally outdated now, but this is the rpg that i most enjoyed playing in my life.

i had so much fun playing it as a kid...

cmon, for a 8 bit console it's perfect!

  • it is, its at least gunnier then the first Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest

  • This game was probably the first real Japanese RPG game released in Europe in 1988 (Legend of Zelda is a action RPG) and I still love this so much. Phantasy Star 1 & Final Fantasy 3(snes us) is the best RPG's ever made.

  • Dis some classic tunes

  • I use to play this back in what 88 89 when it came out. I beat it many times again and again. So many hours spent playing this game! The second one that came out on Genesis was good too. I think after the third or fourth one when it went to xbox thats when it went down hill. I remember I had this on sms and my brother played dragon warrior on nes . My first rpg was miracle warriors on sms. That was good but not as good as PS !

  • I must of been like 7 - 8 years old when I played this game! ahh the memories.

  • @ProducerMattyB must HAVE been. not of been.

  • Fuck I loved this game & its music. I'm getting old lol.

  • I was fanatic about this game, I used to draw every monster with stats, keep sheet records, I've actually plotted the entire world maps of all tree planets in squared papers with pencils, bought booklets with every single maze, had to use walkthroughs, but... yeah... im a freak... but IVE FINISHED THAT GAME!!! and had an unbelievable time doing that! ; )

  • That opening theme still gives me chills.

  • you found burger

  • sorry not saccubus but darkfallz.

  • i had the sega master system verion...i need an emulator now...but i never ended this game...i killed lessyc but i never found saccubus...i always fell in the dungeon under the governor house...and then???someone can tell me how to find the final big bastard???

  • Check the Governor's place in Motavia, see what's going on there

  • you cannot pass without roadpass

  • wow i feel like i need to change my contacts watching the overhead portions.

  • tell me where i can play phantasy star I and i'll pay you all i have...i cried when i listened to this music...i didn't play it since 1990.

  • It should have come out a new version of phantasy star for ps3 but the same good old sega feeling! I got the game right next to me ^^

  • you can play it on emulator, google will help ya out :)

  • Should be on Wii soon. All the Mega Drive ones are on it.

  • i know a website where you can play this, i have phantasy stars 2 3 and 4 so i couldnt play this game until 14 years later, yay, all hail the internet

  • My first RPG; if you weren't there, it may be hard to understand how amazing this was in the 80's

  • "now saving..

please do not turn off you GBA"

    Gameboy Advance??

  • The video footage is from Phantasy Star Collection for GBA.

  • @garudoh dood u made me happy one more time with this game t.t best game ever

  • "Would you like to open it?"

Who wouldn't open a fucking treasure chest? Lol

  • people who are afraid of traps.

and people who dont like treasure chests.

and mostly people who dont treasure chests and are afraid of traps.

  • Hot Dam!!! i loved ths shit it kept me off the streets

  • that first person scrolling through the rooms is way ahead of its time. Looks awesome!

Good tunes too. Shame i missed this one.

  • Holy shacrappy! Man...this was one of my favorite games back in the day. So much good music and many good memories... thanks for putting this up!

  • ahhah to me too...

I was just... 7, 8 years old... man, how could I?? te hee.

  • What a wonderful game & the soundtrack is just as good! It was this very game that got me started on a years-long love of RPG's.

  • me too
