  • I think Karen Carpenter should be remembered primarily for her fantastic talent and not as a case study of anorexia - however tragic her life. Having said that, this film is interesting!

  • It's amazing how Todd Haynes, obviously a man, was able to make a film with such tremendous sympathy for women, let alone women with eating disorders. It truly is a crime that this film is not available for the general public--more women and girls NEED to see this film and know they are not alone.

  • @rabidrabbitshuggers I think it transcends gender. As a gay man, Todd Haynes could understand the need to try to conform to an unrealistic standard that society sets before all of us.

  • Who's the little sweetheart at 5:42?

  • Haynes needed to do better research. If he had, he would have known that : a) Karen HATED the diet which she went on when she was 16, b) Richard was called "chubby" by Bill Board Magazine, not Karen. She was never called anything disparaging at all, actually. Also, Karen developed her illness because she lost her drums and never gained her family's respect or love. Her illness had very little to do with weight, and she did NOT spend all of her time talking about her weight.

  • @improvguru It's a fucking movie. Get over it.

  • @metronomic1 It's an inaccurate movie. So fuck you.

  • conceptional brilliant! Write letters to Mattel saying let this flick back on the market!!

  • @diddymuck

I don't think Mattel was the problem…it was Richard Carpenter who protested the film.

  • @rabidrabbitshuggers Yeah, it was, he was concerned about how the public would perceive him if this was released. Great film in my opinion though.

  • karen voce is so awsome i am in awe ov hw well she could sing so efoeestly

  • the carpenters music,is epic there will never bee anyother band like them.

  • I've heard about this and it's interesting and there's some nice detail, but frankly, I don't know why this bothered Richard. It's really very silly overall. The voiceovers are very bad. Whoever did Richard's voice is pretty good and does sound like him, though. I'm glad you posted it, though. It seems pointless to have pulled it from circulation, although the filmmaker shouldn't be making money off of it without having gotten permission to use the music.

  • @tbirdy Richard's reason for suing Todd Haynes was because he ILLEGALLY used the Carpenter's music in the movie

  • @1Cheytown That makes good sense, although his suing probably just drew more attention to the movie.

  • ...why do I have a hard time believing Karen said "god damn?"

  • todd haynes, my hero

  • I do think this is a little cult movie and it is also widely underestimated.

  • This movie screened at out film festival in Houston years ago. You will never see it on DVD becasue of the lawsuits.

  • CLOSE TO YOU always makes us feel a bit nauseous.

  • love it!

    fun & serious

    ;-)

  • HD version anyone?? ;) lol.

  • There was just mention of Karen telling Mom of his secret, but that was Karen wanting to tell their parents of his addiction to Quaaludes. But apparently everyone thinks that the secret, is that he is gay. Which is pure silliness. Richard was in several long term relationships with women, and several that worked for Karen as hairdressers etc.

  • I was waiting for Don "no soul" Simmons to start singing.

  • Just because someone is married and/or has kids does not mean that he/she is straight. Duh... You-Tubers are retarded.

  • I hope they'll make a Karen Carpenter movie with real people soon.

  • @kirsm

Huh? Those weren't real people in this Todd Haynes film? I just thought they were stiff & awkward...make that VERY stiff....

  • I saw this in the theater at a gay film festival and tried to figure out why it was there? Richard has 5 kids, for f**k's sake! Besides, these days there are SO many media whores that someone would have talked. Oh, BTW, Karen's drum set was much bigger, and YES I am a size queen when it comes to my drum sets!

  • Maybe because filmmaker, Todd Haynes, openly identifies as gay.

  • When you post someone else's work its good form to credit them. We're not all gullible 16 yr olds ready to assume poster=originator. Though I'm quite ready to believe you simply 'just forgot to find room to mention him in there all your tags and description.

This was made in 1986 by Todd Haynes (and the dude's had quite a career since - check him out on IMDb)

  • LOL at Nixon playing the piano!

  • More like can YOU find a better way to spend your time? If you thought you've wasted your time watching this video, then you shouldn't have watched it.

  • I just was waiting for it to get better.

  • Those black titles are impossible to read. Anyone know where they can be read without going blind?

  • @layton59 i think the choice to make them impossible to read was an intentional one on haynes' part
