What a lot of people forget is that BEFORE he went to Groningen, he was one of 3 players selected by Ajax Amsterdam after trials (the others - Jan Molby and if I am not mistaken Marco Van Basten). He decided not to stay on the advice of his uncle and went to play in Indonesia instead!!! Not even Johann Cryuff' speaking to him and telling him he would stay with a Dutch Indonesian family, and Ajax would take care of everything could change his mind. This is I believe Fandi's biggest regret!
Groningen niet meer goed, oke ze zijn slechter als toen maar ze staan nu keurig 3e hoor met geluk worden ze dit jaar 2e.. en dan spelen ze voorbereiding champioens league. Ja ik ben altijd positief!
i am a malaysian fan and im impressed with fandi performance to play with european club but why asean people could not stand to stay in europe??did they miss their hometown??for example fandi himself just stay for 2 season and then went back to asean....malaysian legend, mokhtar dahari received offer from arsenal and barcelona but he refuse to go...i think if both of them go and stay in europe, maybe asean football could be better nowaday!!maybe play in the world cup..hehe
@camounes Its a combination of bad advice, immaturity, lack of passion, attitude and drive and settling for less. Fandi couldnn't handle the cold? How many African players come from much hotter countries? Sundram couldn't settle in Zurich if I recall. Its much easier being the bigh fish in a small pond. Why be an average player in Europe when you can be the best in South East Asia (not even in Asia)? SEA players need to change their attitude - you have to sacrifice for your dream.
@singwolf hey dude i think you're forgetting something very important here. You're talking about the 80s here. this during a time where the internet was not even in existence. Fandi grew up in the 'kampung' singapore era. Without the internet and the effects of globalization, people hardly knew anything about what lay beyond their shores. Back then, europe was very very foreign to people in the 'far east' especially in south east asia.
@jorrd dude, I am the same age as Fandi! Yes the Internet has made the world a lot smaller, but we were not that "ulu" or "sua-ku" back then. The fact that he went to Holland for trials means it was something that he wanted. Ajax said that they would house him with an Indon Muslim family (lots there), feed him and school him. All he had to do was play football (and learn). He got very bad advice from his uncle cause the Indons were dangling big money for his signature. Thats why he didn't stay!
@singwolf the shock of experiencing such a different culture must have been far greater than what you would expect now. being one of the very few or even sole import from SEA, one can only imagine how difficult it would have been to adapt to such drastic changes in terms of climate, culture, food and basically every thing. I think that fandi deserves our utmost respect even for getting this far. sure it was an excellent opportunity missed.
However, considering the circumstances, we have to sympathize and realize that adapting to such a jarring change of environment must have been pretty traumatic.
fandi was just in the right place at right time. There was no glimpse of his talent.. he didnt even make any good runs. Anyone at there in that point of time could have scored too.
To the rest of the world: this video contains the ONLY goal scored by a Singaporean in a continental European competition. It is very possibly the greatest moment ever in our tiny nation's football history. (Look us up in Google Earth and see just how small our country is.) The clip may mean nothing to you, but it means everything to us. We may never reach such heights ever again, but nothing can take that moment away from us. Hopefully, this video remains on YouTube forever.
@PunaiCat hopefully hariss... but NS is coming for him... we hanafi akhbar impressed tottenham hotspur head coach in recent friendly against them. we got fandi ahmad kids who impressed europe big guns. we never know. and this players are guaranteed to represent singapore, unlike our neighbouring countries' wonderkids.
@ChronicKnight who says? their fans were even saying. shanghai wants to sign him and loan to athletico madrid. but being realistic, its bullshit.
doesnt he didnt sign with the team doesnt he didnt impressed. obviously its hard for them to communicate. even wilhelmsson, the swede that was on trial found it hard to communicate with them.
he's fandi and he's here to score the captain in 94... damn those were the days... shldnt fandi get like a hall of fame awar in Singapore or something like tt....
Nou Jeroen, FC Groningen uit: altijd lastig. Onderschatting, guur weer, fanatieke supporters, vechtersmentaliteit. Daar zijn die verwende Italianen nog niet klaar mee. Fiorentina kwam een paar jaar geleden nog met de schrik vrij.
actually yea you know its hard to adapt. i mean got language difference. even if no language difference like if he moved to england the weather will be a problem. i mean 10'C is hot to them while here 28'C actually quite cold already leh. but the real singaporeans dont really get a chance. also, the salary of footballers here is not that high. when they retire, they will have no source of income. and footballers gernerally receive little education. what job can they find?
Despite the influx of "unnatural" Singaporeans in the Singapore national football team, it is without a doubt that the best talent (and loyal at that) Singapore has ever seen is still our very own borned flesh & blood.
Fandi, thank you for igniting us with flashes of your talent, even in a foreign soil like the Netherlands. While you might regret not joining Ajax then, but you have already done so much that make us being deeply proud of you.
We need to move on ... he is a true legend, but there is no point trying to emulate him - there will only be one Fandi. We have talent, we will find it, and we will have new Singapore Idols to support.
Fandi Ahmad - the ONLY Singapore Idol (sorry, Taufik and Hady).
icedwater, we will have a new Singapore Idol, Sylvia something and Suzeihri YEAHH! (Who cares anyways). True, there is only one Fandi. However, some new talents like Hariss Harun seems to be genuinely good players, the way he marshal the midfield is something I have not seen for a long time. Too bad, the rest of the team has not matured as he already does, but we'll see, even Malaysia has gone through a rough patch and now has won the SEAGames.Hope to hear the Kallang Roar again, nothing like it
He is still my hero! I was 12 back then, remembered staying up till 4am watching that game on TV, but it was worth it! FANDI is the pride of the EAST... :)
can somebody please transalate what the commentator was saying..and if there's any groningen fans of the 80s, i would like to know how good fandi was..cos he's still the best in s'pore..
The commentator is basically describing what was happening and that was clearly Groningen being the best team. Fandi was a talent by then but had problems with the cold climate. But the return match result was Inter-Groningen 5-1 and was played in Bari town. I remember it very well . Aldo Serena scores two goals. Collovati,Altobelli and Hansi Muller the others
