When I was 7, my grandfather had a tape with about 15 songs of Harry Belafonte, including this one. Every time he took me home from my swimming lessons, he would play that tape and give me a sweet. Then, when we drove into the street where I lived, I would sit on his lap and he let me steer the last little part. It's a memory I will never forget. My grandfather died 6 weeks ago.
Fifty years ago, my Dad would put this record on, lie down on the living room carpet with the lights out, and close his eyes. In his mind, he was probably taking a nice break from real life, his work, kids and troubles, maybe hanging out a Caribbean beach with Harry and Liza. He was a great Dad. I love this song for making him happy then, and providing me a happy memory of him now.
love this song, i learnt it when i was around 6-7 years old at school- my teacher taught us so many classics such as this while playing her guitar, we'd all gather around on the carpet and sit around her and sing while she played the guitar.

I too remember Belafonte as the first music that I ever heard, at three or 4 years old. Love this stuff.
