@MoonHoplite hm.. I find what you're saying quite impossible O.o ... Not many "immature teenage girls" even know who he is. And who cares if they think he is cute.. He is. Can't change that. But also in my opinion his music is very beautiful. It speaks to people really.. I just don't think you should go labeling his fan base. Every person who enjoys his music is of every age I do believe, and I think I'd have to say the "immature teenage girl" fan base would be the lowest.
i don't know why but when i'm listening to rufus i always get the feeling that i've already heard the harmonies he uses somewhere else.. maybe on classical music.. chopin? schubert? i don't know... i came here to see if anyone felt the same but i guess not. anyway, terrific song
@gomezz Well I imagine that those pieces influence him. He is known for listening to those type of things. I know at the end of "between my legs" you can clearly hear a bit of phantom of the opera.
@gomezz Rufus is a classically trained musician. He is an avid fan of opera and studied piano at Concordia and McGill Universities in Montreal. Many times art inspires art so it isn't a surprise that you recognized some similar progressions. He even copies the lyrics in one song directly from the opera, Macbeth by Verdi. I personally think he is an amazing talent and I respect him greatly. I have many friends in the music community and I know 1st hand how difficult it can be to get in.
He's in a class by himself. I am constantly amazed and in awe of his talent. Love his melodies, his vocals, his piano playing, and the real human emotions he puts into each of his songs. What an amazing performer and songwriter he is!! He has no peers.
If you ever get a chance to see Rufus live, go. He puts on a terrific concert. He is talented in every way, and when he performs alone -- just him and the piano or guitar without any machines or back-up -- he shines like the true star he is.

Too bad that it seems most of his fanbase are young teenage girls, who keep saying he is "cute".
That totally puts me off, why should any decent person like this musician, when he has fans like that, making him look like another "Jonas Brothers" fad?
I think he's a good musician though, but I hate the fact that the majority of his fanbase are just immature girls. So it seems, looking at the youtube comments for his videos.
His music definitely carries you into a space. I think he is a lovely musician. As well as I do notice the distinctions between songs, I do notice similar vocal intros to a lot of songs.
My Dad and I are HUGE Rufus fans!!! :-) In fact my Dad cries whenever he hears Greek song...he he...but he says is correctly when he says his voice is "haunting" - absolutely, and just beautiful.
he's the rodgers and hart of our generation, writing songs that will be recorded 50 years from now; this and "the art teacher" are modern standards. i'm always stunned by his phenomenal talent. a great songwriter; a great performer.
I imagine songs like this being performed by ella fitzgerald or other great jazz singers. when he goes real low, "just away from this love affaaaair..." god I wish I could hear ella sing that!
not that I don't love rufus' voice, because I do, but modern standards they are indeed. classic
so i finally work through my infatuation with "the art teacher," move ahead two tracks on "want two" and find this phenomenally gorgeous, haunting song. i'll say it again and stand by it: he's the most insanely talented, original songwriter of our time.
Stunning, chilling and profound performance. Every time I hear it I feel like my heart is breaking. This song is one of the best at showcasing his amazing voice.
