Calling out Ronald Reagan, while looking dead in the camera's eye! He was Cali Gov at this time. the more I see of BD, the more I love. Nice harp solo, too...
Bobby was a musical genius, and it is so unfortunate that his life was shortlived. I was stationed at Ft Dix New jersey in1960 as a young kid from Texas when my friends from NY City began telling me about Bobby. He was already a superstar, and there was no limit to what he would have accomplished had he lived a full life.
This guy rocked that harmonica! I saw Beyond the Sea a couple of days ago and wanted to dig deeper about him. Looking at all these youtube footage of him, I have soooo much respect for him. I only knew him from the Beyond the Sea and Mack the Knife songs. I never never knew this guy had soul and play all these instruments! Amazing!!
Just finished reading His son Dodd's book...What a giving human being Bobby was..I have always been impressed by his talant..but wow! I work with alzheimers patients and try my best to contribute some good to the world but next to this man I feel so inadaquate.
By the way he did not drink or do drugs. He had a bad ticker and far exceeded his life expectancy. He is missed.
I was born in 1939. I was a part of the Rock and Roll religion., So I suggest you all drop back a little... This Dude is still alive, and kicking... I knew them all......
So I can stand tall. You? Your so small, you sound like your willing to crawl.. Well dont! Dont you dare... Just climb a different wall. Live in your own world. You have so much to move on.. Can You???.
Sorry Dad? What the hell are you talking about. He died because, he could not afford the amounht of "Blood Sugar", he consumed. He Drank too much. if your ill..,.. Your are ill.... He was also special to me, and my life. But I suggest you spend more time on your kids, and their drive for recognision,,,,
@Grifiki Please get your facts straight. He died because of a congenital illness as the other comment said..Please don't make up things and ruin this forum.
Genius talent as always. It was the last year of his life. He literally drove himself into the grave, fighting demons the whole way. He was caught between two worlds, Rat Pack, and the 60's Rockers, never really fitting into either one. But he had more talent than any of them and didn't get the respect or recognition he deserved. Maybe now he will. And hey, those dance moves are great, one of the few singers who also could dance. Thanks to Kevin Spacey for the movie.
Bobby was a smart guy. He owned publishing rights to alot of songs. Very lucrative. In later years headlining Vegas, he would opt to camp in the desert and just chill out. What a talent!!
He sounds like Joe Cocker and moves like Tom Jones....! WOW...! What an entertainer... I thought he was 'Mack the Knife' and 'Splish Spash' - but it turns out he was much, much more. Too bad he left us much too early......
Starting 5th December 2008, BBC Radio 2 is broadcasting a 4-part documentary series called BOBBY DARIN: A MAN IN A HURRY. You can listen to it online anytime from anywhere in the world by logging on to the BBC RADIO 2 website.
Bobby played Splish Splah on the Midnight Special TV show way back in the 70's or so, near the end of his too-short-life. The set had a mirror, on the opposite side of the piano which reflected back on him, and they boogied and oh mama did that mirror shake! A metaphor for the rockin' soul he had. Midnight Special TV show...anybody know where I can see this clip?
Sinatra was a great singer but Darin was a great singer and performer. Sinatra couldn't touch him when it came to galvanizing the stage with his presence.
A multi faceted performer, xylophone, piano, gob iron, sining dancing and a very funny man as well. Taken too soon. Superior in talent to Elvis and Sinatra.
Dear matjohnroe, you made a wonderful and soooo true statement!!! The GREAT BOBBY DARIN.....so missed and desired to this day! He would be in his 70`s today!! My heart aches for what could have been, through these last 30 some years......dh
I disagree with many Bobby purists on the merits of early Darin vs. Darin of the late 60's, early 70's....I liked his late 50's, early 60's night club, "Mack", "Lazy River" tuxedo personna far more than the political activist Darin stuff that he sadly morphed into....but I give him credit for singing what he believed in, even though it wasn't commecrcially working...the fact that Bobby was doing his good old stuff again, toupe and tux, before he died says something about the guy...
He may have put his toupe back on, but dig the comment about Ronnie Reagan at 2.34. Bobby was ever a man of conviction and his political commitment was always evident even in his final years and shows.
Yes, but with that "CHANGE", he touch the souls of all music genders with his brilliance and indured the hands of time.....I love all his diversity****it made him unique & special in my opinion**** Darin Forever, dh
i love this guy but sinatra.....well...he.....wait, is he playin piano?.....f/n love the darin really i was raised on this guy....one of his songs won me £400 pissed on a thursday night....alone in the world was poor little anne
You are soooo right about that.....Sinatra wasn`t half as talented as Bobby was....all`s Sinatra did was sing---Bobby`s passion, energy, sexapeal & humor on stage was phenomenal and so gifted in playing piano, guitar,drums,harmonica,xylophone.....pure gift from God...shall I go one..could sing rock, folk, country, jazz, blues, soul, just simply a icon of his time & NOW !! "Mack is Back" to stay !!!!!!!!!!!! dh
Darin did it all....singer, composer, musician (piano, guitar, drums, harmonica). Sammy Davis said he was the only one he wouldn't want to follow on stage. He was only around 38 when he tragically died.
Bobby will be dead in December of 1973, just 10 months after this clip. He was a very talented man. Just saw one of his movies, Hell is For Heroes this morning. He's a great actor too!
Have only just "discovered" the GREAT Bobby Darin...WOW awsome...love this clip and the others on YT..thanks heaps keep it happenin'..(new)Bobby Darin fan!

Not that he could be any more extradorinary, but it's especially amazing when you consider that the man was pretty much dying at this time. As a performer he was in a league of his own.
Thanks for putting up that performance by my idol, Bobby Darin, on the Tonight Show. During his career, he switched for a short while to having a Sixties-type of band, beard and all. He I wonder if you might have that Tonight Show performance? A year later he was back on the Tonight Show and Johnny asked him what happend to the hippy look, and Bobby said that it didn't work with his fans. They wanted him to be plastic and phony, and so he would go back to being that. Real from-the-heart stuff.
Right On--after viewing all these vids , i'm almost at a loss for words, he was a major one of a kind talent , could of stood up to anyone then or now -no doubt. He,started as a Drummer and could multi- task ,talk about soul, r&b, gospel ,rock or jazz.Lets hope, He's looking down on us all .GOD BLESS!
How is this guy not more famous? He's has more talent than Frank Sinatra ever had, yet, not a lot of people know of him. It's disgusing! So much talent! If only he were still living or lived longer. He would have been even more legendary. He is greatly missed. How i wish i could have seen him perform.

This is for Yatsey 1978. What I said about
Bobby Darin was heartfelt and true. He had a
dynamic personality. One was kept in awe watching every little movement afraid to loose anything. In the 1973 Medley while being
interviewd by Johnny Carson & Ed. McMahon
he outshined them both.He had a compelling way
of speaking very intelligent & confident like
he is with his singing, music & dancing. Knows exactly what he's saying & means it.I perceive he is kind, thoughtful & compassionate
GOOD.

Absolutly vintage! Great performer! One Of a kind!

Only one word describes Bobby Darin FANTISTIC MARVELLOUS. He does everything down to a 'T'
Dances,Conducts,plays the Mouth Organ.Piano.
He gives it everything he's got. You can tell
he loves music and singing. Sometimes he seems to leave Frank Sinatra in the dust. And
I like Frank Sinatra very much. There's not
enough accolades for Mr. Darin. Too bad we lost such a talented performer so young and
vibrant. His legacy of music will live on.
