Whether she is any good at this job or not is debatable. I think she's a perfectly fine commentator but that's just personal oponion.
However, there is one irrefutable fact: she is better than John Motson. And if John Motson can still keep his job as a BBC commentator, despite being painfully bad, then I don't see why Jackie Oatley can't do the same job.
I think these sexist comments are disgraceful. Show some respect, its nearly 2012!! Besides, she is doing a great job. Its not easy commentating AND doing the ironing at the same time, fair play to her.
Comon, it's really not THAT bad, I have nothing against female commentators aslong as they are passionate about football and have the skill to match the others at BBC.
Eh, she's got the words, but there's just nothing behind the voice. You don't get the excitement from the goal that you'd normally get from another commentator. Though gender has nothing to do with it; it's just that she's a rather average commentator.
Funny, isn't it. This just doesn't sound right, however if she was presenting a highlights package or something like that, or a news item on the game, there would be no problem. Perhaps a woman's voice clashes with the roar of the crowd, particularly in exciting moments. It pierces and spoils, when a commentator should compliment what's on the field.
Rather than wanting more women in the commentary box or on the sidelines, more attention should be given to getting the women's game airtime.
I think this commentary's fine. I'd much rather listen to this than that scratchy din of Jonathan Pearce or the whiney tone of John Motson any day, & she made no mistakes either which cannot be said for many other BBC commentators
You're only complaining because you're not used to it, and if you heard every week you'd stop noticing it and there wouldn't be a problem
At least she doesn't just say the players' names like some commentators do! I don't have a problem with her, she doesnt seem to make fuck-ups and she at least actually describes what's going on. I'm not saying that she's the best commentator or anything, I'm just saying she's not any worse than some of the other commentators.
Appalling commentary. Her voice is just plainly annoying. No reflection on her as a person or women in general. There are some terrible male commentators too. The female voice just isn't suited to commentary. God, imagine she was doing a live match!! Just too high pitched when something exciting is happened.
The worst commentary eve! She's like a female Alan Partridge gone wrong...sadly, however, she's not funny in any shape or form. I hope they don't give her any big games to commentate on as whenever I hear her rubbish commentary and annoying squeaky schoolboy voice i have to hit mute!
@123twan123 reason 2 is ridiculous. and if you knew anything about football you would know that we dont have a professional womens league in england. all our players left for america when fulham went back to amateur.
it is sexism, but none of you want to admit it. pathetic really.
@racewalkingrules womans premier league cup look online i think you'll find they have a league! te reason nobody see's it on tv or bothers with it is because like it or not its a mans game thats not sexist or ignorant its fact! Are you all sexist pigs or something? What's wrong with her? Shes clear, concise and makes me feel that pre-shot excitement the same as any other commentator does.
Why shouldn't a women be allowed into the football sphere?
For goodness sake this is 2009. We should be long past the argument about women in sport. We have just as much right as men to be there.
No it has nothing to do with sexism. amd nobody is talking that women should not be practicing certain sports. It is as awefull as a man commentating rhythmic gymnastics, it is just wrong. If women want to commentate soccer games there is plenty of women soccer games to comment, k. Now fek off with your misplaced feminism,
@jonny6554 not true and not true. I think she's attractive, and I think she does a pretty good job . . . . better than any of us could do I guarantee it.

Certainly they are admirable attributes in a commentator but I really do not think she merits or deserves these accolades. I feel that she was pushed forward, solely as "tokenism" because of her gender. I would guesstimate that there are hundreds of other males who could give a more cogent delivery.
Its significant, I feel, that she is no longer there and, to my knowledge, not one of MOTD's current Commentators.
God, some of you lot amaze me! Anyone would think you'd never heard a woman speak before!
I think the problem is that there's not really anyone else to compare her to, so you're all comparing Jackie Oatley here with the guys who we're all used to. And you lot are all like "She's got a higher voice than John Motson! This is an outrage!".
Once a few more women break through to football comentating everyone will start to accept them and pick their favourite(s).
She is awful and I turn the volume down on any match she is commentating on until it is over. She has been even more annoying in recent interviews she has done during the six nations. She is so blatantly pro-english it makes my blood boil!
Listening to her commentate was one of the weirdest experiences I've had recently. It sounded like Guy had a sex change.
What I mean is that her style was just an impersonation of the way most of the fellas do it. The inflections, the tones of her voice were all right on cue. So what can she do to improve, eh?
Sit down, lower your head and keep to yourself on topics that you don't understand, and don't you dare criticise the competent and educated audience of a subjective artform of which you have little comprehension, and hence have no part in.
And football is very much part of my life, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that since you seem not to know or understand much about a sport that means so much to so many (as clearly demonstrated by your insistence that she's good enough for the position she's currently holding).

"If she sounded like John Motson or Brian Moore I'd accept her. But she doesn't "
That's because John Motson and Brian Moore are MEN, you plank! And she isn't one. Why don't you try looking past the higher-than-usual voice and try to focus on her skills as a commentator. I think she did alright here: articulate and informative, could have shown a bit more enthusiasm though...then again I suppose it was only Fulham-Blackburn!
Skills as a commentator include the sound of her voice, if you don't know that then you're a plank. Someone can come out with all the sense in the universe but if they've got a crap voice, which she has, they're a crap commentator. That's why I don't like Alan Parry nowadays, used to have a great voice, but now the years have gone by and it's annoying when he shouts. And Why is informative important? I know about football and I can see it on the screen, how much info can she possibly give me?
she is shit that voice annoys me sounds like shes nagging. no im not sexist i just cant stand her voice and she dosent create any atmosphere like jonathon pearce, i dont think women will ever be accepted in comentating football.
cant enjoy a game with a female commentator! sounds like a little posh boy..so annoying!
woman probably doesnt even like footy! im sick of all this pc bollocks! 'ooh women have the right to do this and that!' fuck off and stop ruining stuff!
In Brazil , TV Record has the first brazilian female commentator . She is Milly Lacombe. She is commenting Euro 2008 and will comment UEFA Champions League 2008/2009.
When I read the name "female football commentator" I just sighed and expected it to be shit. I've seen to many women getting a spot as "experts" duscussing the game in half time, probably only for the reason that they are women. But this actually sounds ok. I'm not bothered by it at all. I'm surprized!
She is fine describing the outset of the game in the first 10 seconds or so; but as soon as he actually starts commentating and raising her voice; its too high pitch.
I prefer a more earthy masculine tone to my commentary. I want to hear grit and enthusiasm not a woman raise her voice in an unconvincing fashion.
It's a fair enough point but she adds in stupid comments and facts "and its the Italian on loan from Roma" and most of the time when someone scores she puts on their age, fair enough for a young or an old guy but for a 29 year old is there any need? One more thing, she never insults anyone!!!
Ok. But it was her debut so why can't everyone just chill instead of slaughter her? And does she still add these irrelevant comments when she now commentates on MotD? The Roma comment was alright my book. There were only two goals in the match so how can you say she adds the age on most of the time!!!??. They should really use her for high-profile matches.
Attack the messenger and not the message. Says it all really.
Because I've decided to take a shot at your ridiculous assertion that we're being sexist for calling her out as the mediocre commentator that she is, I now have no life?
if i was blatter i would ban all women from football, not only forbiding them playing but also having any interest in the sport.i would even have strict rules which demand big sum of money.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For those who are stereotyping that women don't know shit about football are complete bastards and absurdly outdated. grow up u sexist bastards. the world is changing so just accept it, football is not only men's privilege. a minority of women are passionate for the sport just as much as the guys. there's nothin wrong with her voice and she does a great job, better than many to name. you all immature creeps, open your eyes to the real world.
Open your eyes to football. The fact that you think she's alright has qualified you as a contributor to the so called "sexism" that you're trying to expel. Irony.
I hate this woman's voice, I can't concentrate on the match when shes on - same for when the scouse commentators on and I'm a scouser myself - all commentators should sound like Martin Tyler!!!!!!!!!!
Oh for fucks sake can't we have just ONE area of our lives as blokes not infiltrated by all the crap of political correctness? Women are equal yes but there needs to be some cultural divides for the sake of sanity that allows men to be men. Let women commentate on women's football and all other women's sports and let men do the same, Jackie should be flying the flag for womens football.
She has the right technique and great commentator ability, everything a normal commentator would say, but its just the female voice which doesn't suit...
Still better than all the ITV commentary crew.

keithwellerlounge74 3 years ago 2
"If she sounded like John Motson or Brian Moore I'd accept her. But she doesn't "
That's because John Motson and Brian Moore are MEN, you plank! And she isn't one. Why don't you try looking past the higher-than-usual voice and try to focus on her skills as a commentator. I think she did alright here: articulate and informative, could have shown a bit more enthusiasm though...then again I suppose it was only Fulham-Blackburn!
SuperBobster10 2 years ago
Skills as a commentator include the sound of her voice, if you don't know that then you're a plank. Someone can come out with all the sense in the universe but if they've got a crap voice, which she has, they're a crap commentator. That's why I don't like Alan Parry nowadays, used to have a great voice, but now the years have gone by and it's annoying when he shouts. And Why is informative important? I know about football and I can see it on the screen, how much info can she possibly give me?
keithwellerlounge74 2 years ago 3
she is shit that voice annoys me sounds like shes nagging. no im not sexist i just cant stand her voice and she dosent create any atmosphere like jonathon pearce, i dont think women will ever be accepted in comentating football.

People, stop being such sexists. Ever heard of human rights? It's stupid and sad how people can be sexist, racist or whatever.

In Brazil , TV Record has the first brazilian female commentator . She is Milly Lacombe. She is commenting Euro 2008 and will comment UEFA Champions League 2008/2009.
ACRE1971 3 years ago
When I read the name "female football commentator" I just sighed and expected it to be shit. I've seen to many women getting a spot as "experts" duscussing the game in half time, probably only for the reason that they are women. But this actually sounds ok. I'm not bothered by it at all. I'm surprized!

Not Bad it hasn't happened in Australia
yet so what can we say. And women do have a role in football

women...football
women.....football
women....football...it just does not work,
it almost makes me sick listening to this woman commentating, it just doesn't work!!
manc14life 3 years ago
exactly. i mean im not being sexist, but it just doesn't work. i know some chicks who think the same way.
gglbc 3 years ago
voice is too high when she gets excited, i must say she has a very manly voice for a woman.
a77777x 3 years ago
She is fine describing the outset of the game in the first 10 seconds or so; but as soon as he actually starts commentating and raising her voice; its too high pitch.
I prefer a more earthy masculine tone to my commentary. I want to hear grit and enthusiasm not a woman raise her voice in an unconvincing fashion.

I still prefer this to John Motson

If a man said all what she said, I don't think anybody would have noticed anything bad. Football itself is a sexist game.
MadinahStudent 3 years ago
It's a fair enough point but she adds in stupid comments and facts "and its the Italian on loan from Roma" and most of the time when someone scores she puts on their age, fair enough for a young or an old guy but for a 29 year old is there any need? One more thing, she never insults anyone!!!
1308bjh 3 years ago
MadinahStudent 3 years ago
She commentated quite a few times and thats how I know she adds ages and she still adds lots of irrelevant facts
1308bjh 3 years ago
Why don't MotD get Alan Green and Mike Ingham?
MadinahStudent 3 years ago
That would be heaven - time for Motty to hang up his microphone - hes just on there for his supposed comedy duo act with Lawro
nabster85 3 years ago
Yeah. But Green and Lawro - that would be good for BBC ratings.
MadinahStudent 3 years ago
1. The game is not sexist.
2. If you do consider it sexist, tough luck.
jkstatic 3 years ago
Tough luck? Very well. But your rebuttal against me is as if your life depends on football not being sexist. GET A LIFE.
MadinahStudent 3 years ago
Attack the messenger and not the message. Says it all really.
Because I've decided to take a shot at your ridiculous assertion that we're being sexist for calling her out as the mediocre commentator that she is, I now have no life?

For those who are stereotyping that women don't know shit about football are complete bastards and absurdly outdated. grow up u sexist bastards. the world is changing so just accept it, football is not only men's privilege. a minority of women are passionate for the sport just as much as the guys. there's nothin wrong with her voice and she does a great job, better than many to name. you all immature creeps, open your eyes to the real world.
sarah2853 3 years ago
Open your eyes to football. The fact that you think she's alright has qualified you as a contributor to the so called "sexism" that you're trying to expel. Irony.

I hate this woman's voice, I can't concentrate on the match when shes on - same for when the scouse commentators on and I'm a scouser myself - all commentators should sound like Martin Tyler!!!!!!!!!!

It's not so much the fact that she's a woman, more the fact that she's shite!

I thought she was quite good. Better than Motty for sure.
rossoneri18 3 years ago
Oh for fucks sake can't we have just ONE area of our lives as blokes not infiltrated by all the crap of political correctness? Women are equal yes but there needs to be some cultural divides for the sake of sanity that allows men to be men. Let women commentate on women's football and all other women's sports and let men do the same, Jackie should be flying the flag for womens football.
