Did you bother to LOOK at the photographs? Prisons, not merely chain gangs, in the US is all about race. Blacks account for approximately 20% of the US population but their numbers in American prisons amount to more than half. The American criminal justice system is racist.
Let me ask you, have you even worked in a prison? Spent any time in one? I can tell you haven't because of the way you talk. I once worked in a maximum security prison...3,500 inmates and 1,300 officers divided into three shifts. Do the math. Prison conditions improved when it became apparent to all but the dim bulbs in the south that it is much easier and safer to control inmates who have something to lose...namely privileges.
This situation came to a head in the late 1960s with prison riots all over the country culminating in Attica. Of course like all good Americans, a generation later society completely forget the lessons of the past and began making the same mistakes all over again. We cannot lockup everyone who misbehaves. And we cannot mistreat those we do lockup because eventually they will revolt. Read history and learn from it.

I am all for harsh punishments for people in jail/prison. Maybe taking cable, outside privileges, cards, board games, visits, phone calls, canteen, and mail away will make them STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!
@jeepjeep1983 No visits, ,mail , or phone calls would mean that the prisoners' attorneys wouldn't be able communicate with them.The inmates would have barriers to appealing their sentences, definitely unconstitutional. Most of the rest of what you're complaining about is partly allowed to protect the prison staff. Most inmates with absolutely no way to peacefully occupy their time will find something dangerous or underhanded to do instead. I know this because I used to teach in a prison.

I mean, sure we ned people to build some crap and break some crap, but who needs jobs, the people who know they did wrong and would easily accept some help to reform them; or the people out of jobs in that time. The government has screwed up more than once and they know that they've done wrong. Let me ask you, have you even worked in a prison? Spent any time in one? I can tell you haven't because of the way you talk. I once worked in a maximum security prison...3,500 inmates and 1,300 officers divided into three shifts. Do the math. Prison conditions improved when it became apparent to all but the dim bulbs in the south that it is much easier and safer to control inmates who have something to lose...namely privileges.

Of course like all good Americans, a generation later society completely forget the lessons of the past and began making the same mistakes all over again. We cannot lockup everyone who misbehaves. And we cannot mistreat those we do lockup because eventually they will revolt. Read history and learn from it.

@jeepjeep1983 No visits, ,mail , or phone calls would mean that the prisoners' attorneys wouldn't be able communicate with them.The inmates would have barriers to appealing their sentences, definitely unconstitutional. Most of the rest of what you're complaining about is partly allowed to protect the prison staff. Most inmates with absolutely no way to peacefully occupy their time will find something dangerous or underhanded to do instead. I know this because I used to teach in a prison.

In any event, it's incorrect to suggest that race is not still a factor in our justice system today... only 14% of drug users are black, but 45% of those sentenced to state prison for drug violations are black.
