BTW, a very romantic view of the industrial past, I don't remember it in sepia colour but in B&W, full of amoke, chimneys, riots and angry people asking for their laboral rights...
Anyway, the rest is true, although it would be nice to show a bit of what is out of the centre that has been presented thrice.
Well, I'm from Bilbao and this is the first time I see Bilbao as if there were fireworks and parties every day.
The only parties I know in my home city are every weekend (for sure) and in special occasions such as at the end of August (Bilboko Aste Nagusia) and in Christmas.
@Dtoo It's quite multicultural and there are people from many different countries who live here including myself who is from Ireland and is studying Spanish in Bilbao for a year.
i would just like to point out that the number of people arrested each year for "connections with ETA or Batasuna" far exceeds the number of deaths or even attacks carried out by ETA. How does that make sense? And I agree, Bilbao is a beautiful city. Gora Euskal Herria
The Basque Country and its culture exists well before Spain or France existed even as geographic notions. So, it is a historic accident to be ruled by those states. Our day will come as a free and democratic netion!!! FREEDOM FOR THE BASQUE COUNTRY NOW!!!!
I love bascue countrey, but I can't coment about your freedom because It is difficult to speake from my position. GOD bless you my friends long live to Baskonia. GEORGIEN
you speak a lot, but bilbao city style is similar to madrid. If you can have an own country, I want a country for me and my family. I dont wanna pay taxes, be banned to smoke joints or going nude in the street. I need freedom. bullshit
Let the people speak, let them say what they want, don´t oppress anybody. We don´t want a country, we have it!! But we want to set it free, that´s all. I respect your view about Bilbao -Madrid style city, you say-, but I´ve realised that you aren´t a good observer because it´s a fact that they don´t have ANYTHING in common, neither in traditions and culture nor in economics.
I'm talking about city styles (both neoclassical, both with catholic monuments), not about peoples' proudnesses. But even people from vitoria are not considered true basques there because they don't have the same proudness. Those places are catholic inside and speak a common idiom (the majority). You can have another opinion but i'm not oppresing you by telling about mine.
Of course, all cities of western Europe share a common culture -both in religion and arquitecture-, the same goes for islamic or orthodox ones. But I´d never say that Belgrade and Sofia are the same, because they are not.. I¨m not going to give you a lesson about spanish massive immigration or the ban on our language during decades, and let me say that I´m not feeling oppressed by you but, please, don´t tell me what my country is or should be. I wouldn´t do that to you or to anybody else!!
not quite like that, holland for example has been protestant since its beginings, while belgium was catholic, that was the main reason of the separation between those countries. The same goes for ireland and north ireland. Maybe the dictatorship tried to vanish your culture and identity, and so you deserve to be free from all that opression. I dont deny your own identity, what I said is that bilbao is more similar to madrid than to london or paris, but that doesnt make you equal people.
Then you accept our selfdetermination right. That is all we want!To have another language and culture is more important than religion as a differential factor.Much if we speak about the basque culture, the oldest culture of Europe,I don´t know which similarities you speak about:I live in an Atlantic city,a port city, industrial in the past as any other city in W.Europe.Believe me, we have more in common with Liverpool f.ex. than with Madrid, although they´ve tried and they try to change us.
nah, you read that on books and tv, but in your daily life spanish people are not insulting you, opressing you, or deciding for you. If you want self determination, you dont have to lie to get it. Bye bye
No, I have lived it in my family.Oppresion, prision for political reasons. On TV it´s impossible to see that because here we have the biggest censorship of Europe. They have closed up newspapers, radio stations,in the 21st century! They have passed a law so that,at least 15% of the voters can´t vote for their party. They ban a mother to show the pic of her son, because is in prison. What more do you want? The real proof is that they ban any referendum. Let the people decide like in Scotland in 2010!
Of course, not spanish or french laws, but basque ones.
YOU should be ashamed: to ban, to tell others what they are or what they should be, to put the "terrorist" adjective to every party that challenges you. I see that you would be very comfortable in WWII in the german side, or with Bush´s torture methods in Irak. In fact, when I talk to you i feel that I talk to the system. Please, read the last report of Amnesty International about torture by the spanish police.
Im not telling basques to feel spanish or french. Im not even telling them to have any respect for spain or france, you can insult them if you want. But there are things you can do and there are things you cannot do. For example kill you cant do, for example support killers you cant do, for example exhibit killers' photos you cant do. I dont like torture, but a killer like for example de juana chaos deserves to die slowly, he is a phsyco, not a hero
a person with your ideas should vote for a party like pnv that wants self determination peacefully. The batasuna option would be for violent people who like to spit on others. The ban is only for violent party. It was aproved with 100% of votes in strasbourg human rights court. Its very vomitive you say that it is opression when every one knows that batasuna party is friend of the killers.
Bla, bla, bla...A killer is PSOE, who organised the GAL, the PP, which directly comes from the Franco regime, and I challenge you to say which proposal of any proindependence party is antidemocratic. Could you imagine even Mrs. Thatcher banning Sinn Feinn? Impossible in a country of democratic tradition but very possible in Spain. Freedom for Catalonia,Corsica,Flanders,Occitania,Galicia,Sardinia, Wales, Scotland, Britanny and every minorised nations!
PP=Franco, AAA, BVE, Falange... dozens of assassinations
PSOE= GAL (dozens of assassinations), most of them in Northern Basque Country.
Both of them using public finances
IRA= around 3.000 deaths
ETA=around 800.
Anyway, those continue to be effects. The root of them is that we want to be free and people will fight for it,by different means.Your prize should better be for all the European big nationalist states, those that like to kill and destroy minority cultures!
so you belong to that minority of basques that when eta kills you say, "yeahhh another dead fascist". And when they catch an eta assasin you say, "fuck them fascists!, you are the terrorists, eta did nothing wrong!"
I totally agree that people like you should not vote on elections and should be observed closely because they are likely to become borrokas or even terrorists.
I hope you will learn to not justify murders. Look catalonia, no murders, they've done little referendum (more than you)
Do you know a city where you can be mugged twice in the space of 5 days and have your car broken into, Beautiful city but watch you back . Would reccomend San Sabastian much safer
I am also from Bilbao and everything I can add to this video and to the comments is that people here think that this is Spain though we have strong Basque feelings too.

Yes the brits used other methods. All highly democratic like sending military to kill IRA members. Only 100 civilians died.
I wish the british army killed me, I would have a democratic bullet inside.
PP is right wing, but it is not killer
PP: 0 murders
PSOE: 0 murders
GAL: 2 murders (terrorists)
Tatcher: 550 murders (militars)
IRA: around 600 murders
ETA: around 1100 murders
Congratulations. Basque country won the price for more agresive and pshycopath people in the EU nowadays.
