The assumption is that if someone is carrying a gun, there's a way to call it illegal: almost no one qualifies for a New Jersey concealed carry permit, and if they do, it's still hard to stay within the law. Besides, the guy with the gun might have hollow-point ammunition in there (illegal in New Jersey, standard everywhere else) or even a standard, unaltered magazine in a Glock, Springfield XD, S&W M&P.

It is my belief that the purpose of this program is to get people used to the idea that it is normal for the government to barge into your house, search you, and confiscate your guns.

SECOND AMENDMENT does not state that we the people are allowed to bear arms ILLEGALLY. if you're a convicted felon or have obtained a weapon illegally then you have NO right to carry said weapon. going through the proper channels to obtain a gun?? priceless.

not doing so SHOULD result in disarmament. it's not that difficult to get a gun permit. and in NEWARK, there's alot of violence and ex cons walking the streets. i used to live up in that region of new jersey.

It is very difficult to get a conceal and carry permit in New Jersey. They have a restrictive "may issue" policy, which means they can deny you the right to carry a concealed weapon if they so choose.

Also, quite frankly the government has no right to tell its people that they cannot carry a gun. It may be illegal to carry without a permit, but the law is wrong so I can understand people who do. Not everybody who carries an illegal gun is a drug dealer or gangbanger.

This program also goes well beyond gun issues and into privacy issues. If a few people give the police an anonymous tip that somebody has an illegal weapon, do the police have the ability to barge into that persons house and search them? If they do not, then this entire program is impotent and worthless, if they do, then it is a tremendous breach in privacy.

I would not be surprised if a few people call the line and report random people hoping to hit the 'jackpot' and find one that has a gun.
