i think not showing what that thing was makes this more scary as opposed to put everything in front of you for consideration, habituation or even joking.

it is said that some of the best ways for making something scary (be it movies, written stories, etc) is for it to be short and have hints throughout rather than a forced explanation at the end.

i love when i never fully learn about something, especially stories like this because it always comes back to haunt me at the worst times...
