Cool, thanks, personally I enjoy aimless, groundless, pointless, idiotic call downs like your response because it makes a carefully considered, thoughtfully worded response like mine look so much better :-)
Perhaps you are not familiar with authentic African feel. I am.
This young man has all the makings of a really good, if not great bass player. I was hoping to cut down his learning time with some honest, positive, encouragement.
now... what was it YOU were complaining about? :-)
Gee Wiz! What's up with all the haters??? You ignorant bastards! There are Africans of EVERY color. Stop discriminating against the white brothers! LoL Nice bass line! I love African music.
But now that you know the notes, put some authentic feeling to it :-)
Your playing it like a Popular Music bass player. Make the notes pop out more.
Also, play your part more like a percussion instrument, in the sense of your accuracy. "Get up on your toes" so to speak.
Listen to yourself, then honestly listen to some authentic stuff admit the differences that you can hear and work on them. If we can't hear it, we can't fix it. Feel is everything in this stuff.
@snaedwiev Why don't you just show him how it's done by putting up a video, it speaks louder than words. Groove is such a hrd thing to explain with words, and every time I see someone criticizing the groove that someone posts, I check to see if they have videos of them playing, so I can learn more about groove, but strangely, I have never found one of these people to have a video up of them playing, I mean this has happened like 20 times, and every single one is without a video, a phenomenon.
That's a great idea, but I doubt that I'll get to it. As far as your issue with criticisms, perhaps understanding the difference between putting somebody down and encouraging or "coaching" would help.
Point at ONE single negative thing that I said about the video originally (3 years ago, I'm sure he has grown much since then). w=Which part(s) do you disagree with? So far you have only criticized me, not my comments
... Groove can be hard to describe, but that has NEVER stopped us from trying. Alex Acuna was credited by Will Kennedy for describing part of the Latin feel like "rolling an egg" kind of makes sense to me.
The guy in this video has probably improved many time over since even I posted the comment. I would have hired him in one of my bands then, he could probably hire me at this point.
There was nothing negative or "bullshit" about my comments, I stand by what I said :-)
@snaedwiev I don't think I criticized you one time in my post, I just think telling people to groove more on their bass video is like telling a painter to paint more beautiful, or a runner in a race to go faster.. It seems like a pointless criticism to me, because clearly he is trying to play the best version of how he hears this groove.. In my opinion the most useful thing you could do is post the same groove with the proper feel. I take for granted that he is grooving as hard as he can.
Well in my opinion "i love bullshit replies like this. thanks for the laugh" is condescending and suggests that my comments were pointless, which they were not. I agree that demonstrating what I am saying might be helpful, others might even take issue with that. (now this guy plays better than I do, I play drums 1st, then percussion, then bass, then keys ... after over 40 years of performing I am still learning) Some of my most important lessons came from other instrumentalists.
If I were ragging on the guy I could see your point. Most musicians understand ho to take positive comments (like mine) I was hoping to get him thinking not just about what he was playing, but how he was playing it, but I'm repeating myself. If he hadn't wanted comments, he would have blocked or stopped them. Some people might be cruel on YouTube, I am not one of them and object to being grouped in with them. Have you ever attended a professional rehearsal or been coached by a pro?
Not saying that I couldn't demonstrate my point, but I envy this guys overall technique, but that doesn't mean I can't point out where he could be even better.
There are probably a million examples of what I am talking about on YouTube, exceptional examples of this style of music, they will serve him far better than any example that I personally could provide him with, which is why I pointed him in that direction TO BEGIN WITH :-)
Right you are! (lol) all this time I thought I was being all patient with some jerk.
Sorry I didn't notice that you had joined in the comment and replies.
So that throws a different light on the tone of your comments. But it doesn't necessarily change the essence of what I have said.
Now..do you just object to positive critique and encouragement being put into words, as opposed to a video demonstration, or is there something about a specific point or comment that I made? :-)
@snaedwiev It is people who make critique of other peoples ability to "groove" or play a world music with an authentic feel that I take objection to in the absence of a video response.. Simply because it is such a pointless thing to describe in words, and so intangible, that critiquing someone's feel is useless without audio examples.. I feel this is because, people play it the way they hear it, or that their internal clock forces them to play it the way they do, so they need audio to steer them
Well my friend you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I would agree with regard to negative reviews. But I have to flat out reject a general statement like yours. It simply does not reflect any grasp of reality to broad-stroke like that. Countless pros on musical interpretations have existed now, for hundreds of years.
I stand by my positive reinforcements of this fine young players attempt at growing. I suspect he would have disabled comments if he hadn't wanted them...
Hey, I really like your video. It's really good. Short, simple and fantastic. Keep it up.

Sulatakezaddicted 4 years ago
Merci pour le compliment!! Le grooves est tiré du bouquin "les secrets de la basse africaine, dispo chez oscar music ou arrezzo.
LeSebu 4 years ago
Super bouquin je le bosse régulièrement, l'exo no 32 est superbe.
Tout bassiste devrait l'avoir !
ReggattaDeBlanc 4 years ago
yoyonel1808 3 years ago
Le 12 est aussi top dans son style assez lent... Quel mega groove !
En plus ça sert pour le funk ce genre d'exos dans la mesure ou tu taquines la double croche ! Bref tu bosses 2 styles en un ;-)
