  • Such beautiful creatures.

  • Nagyon-nagyon aranyos ! Gyönyörű szép a zene is és a klip is !

  • for 22,000 i could go to south africa more than ten times znd see some penguins,or buy a car

  • @junkheadrev ......ah yes, but then you wouldn't get to go to Antarctica. Its all relative and certainly those other things should come before trips to exotic locations. I would LOVE go to South Africa!!! From Australia that would cost a lot - the wildlife would be spectacular.

  • how much does it cost to go there?

  • @supertrex2 Hi There, I went in 2006 and it was $22,000 per person - NOT cheap - but only two tourist boats went into the Antarctic Circle at the time. You could always look at boats that go to the Antarctic Peninsula - but I suspect they will all be fairly similar. I went on an Orion Expedition cruise - call and see if they still do it??

  • Fiona, no matter how much I watch this video I cannot tire of it; the penguins, the wonderful scenary, especially the glaciers/ice bergs and the music as well. I am learning the piano and I hope one day I will play as well as you but like Antartica, its a long way off but its fun trying to get there and I am enjoying it very much.

  • Those penguins are cute

  • Great video and music, love the piano. That seal looks like he is having a good rest, do they normally eat penguins? I always assumed that penguins would be scared of humans

  • How many penguins are there in antarctica .... i'm asking because i need to no for my project..

  • Jeez, wish I knew, there were 22,000 in the rookery I visited and there would be lots of them............so I couldn't even guess. Sorry I can't help there - maybe google it??? f

  • Ok thanks for helping anyways

  • I love this video regardless of what it is called. It shows a calm & wonderful interaction between humans and animals & a lady who dearly loves wildlife. The birds were not in danger; they came & went at their own accord & nothing was forced. Fiona did no wrong; the animals were more curious than distressed. Some people need to get off their soap boxes & study the real plight of wildlife. This does not fall into the category of threatening a species. It is a peaceful video set to nice music

  • Why are people always talking about nature as we are not a part of it. Humans are also part of nature. There is no difference in her sitting there or a seal or another kind of an animal.

  • because humans treat it as a waste land and destroy it....

  • Fiona, I'm sorry! Must be hard being so"out there". You sound like a deep and caring person. I regret it if I said anything to offend you personally. I feel bad that I just rambled on in anger to be honest, before investigating more. We are all a little "worked up" these days I suppose. Forgive me as I didn't mean anything personal by it. I too love kids and animals and appreciate now what you are doing. You "fighting back" means a lot to me. Hang in girl! Again, sorry. God Bless. td

  • THANKYOU - I really appreciate that and I really DO understand your argument - we both love animals and thats the main thing - I pretty much always like people who love animals, so no problems here. f

  • Forgive me if you took this as a personal attack fj - more as reverence for genuine biologists and researchers. I'm a teacher and was looking for videos for my classroom, and noticed the back and forth and was surprised at the "tone" and at the arrogance. Just looking for something gentle, genuine and with minimal respect to the governing bodies. Peaceout.

  • YAY to Donnabarfield! An insult to wildlife biologists whom actually spend their lives making sacrifices to protect these wild animals and get little pay or recognition. 30 minutes off the heated boat in a fabulously warm jacket doth not a "whisperer" make (lol) and so disrespectful and cocky indeed when confronted. An apology to the IAATO instead of having to be correct? Proceeds towards protecting the animals more impressive such as real $ to research in exchange for free publicity. ugh.

  • Disrespectful? Cocky? I thought this was a difference of opinion, not a personal attack. Of course I would apologise if it were officially stated by the governing body of IAATO that I was out of line - but this HAS been discussed and it was cleared. I'm not feeling my karma is in any way threatened here, attacking me is not helping yours and its not productive to a public forum - (no deletions). Can we keep it a healthy discussion - based on facts and even emotions - not personal attacks.

  • You might have an argument if all you did was sit still. The issue is handling and restraining wildlife.

I've had the privilidge of visiting Antarctica twice and I am a representative of IAATO. An organization in constant negotiation with Treaty members to defend toursim in Antarctica.

  • Ah, but the bird was not restrained - if you watch carefully, he came inside my outstretched arm and was never held against his will - this has already been discussed at boardroom level with IAATO and the Australian Government - and was cleared. I'm a musician - I'm a peaceful musician, I would like to remain in that capacity.

  • Hi Fiona,

What a masterpiece! The penguins, Antarctica, and the music. You were totally ethical & caring with the gentoo penguin pups. It's not like you were penguin clubbing like seal hunters club baby seal pups. When is your next trip to Antarctica?

    Thx.

    Jim.

  • Wonderful video, my son and I who love to travel absolutly loved it. We do plan to go on an Antarctic cruise. Farthest south we have been is Southern Patagonia. Again, many thanks for sharing this great footage.

  • What a lovely piece of music, and it fits in perfectly with the film. I spent a year down in Antarctica, I based at Faraday (now Vernadsky) on the peninsula, and watching this has brought back many fond memories. Thanks Fiona. x

  • Thanks Rory, I would love dearly to spend a year down there - and would like to hear what you did in Antarctica. f

  • Adelies always look like they are playing aeroplanes, they are so comical the way they run with their flippers outstretched. Although not as regal and elegant like the emperors, they are still adorable

  • If this had happened to me I would have felt truly blessed. It is a delightful video. There is no harm in interacting with wildlife as long as you dont put yourself or the animals in danger

  • You were WAY to close to those birds. You should show more respect to them.

  • Rules are: you can't go within 3 metres of wildlife - but if they come to you its different. I sat on a rock and they came to me, I had an Antarctic Official watching the whole time. At no time was the bird doing anything it didn't choose to do. f

  • Hey, the penguins didn't mind that she was there and that one looked like it was soaking up the attention.

'Sides, I think it was cute...the penguin seemed to want her glove!

  • BTW The Cruise belongs to the IAATO so anyone worried about Fiona being too close need not. She is correct. 3 metres, UNLESS they come to you. Fiona followed correct protocol; sit still, let them do their thing; she had to be disinfected from head to toe; nothing was allowed to be taken on to the ice or left behind (food, paper etc) and ALL people (incl Fiona) were closely watched by an Antarctic Ranger

  • Sorry, I was just pissy the day I wrote that.

  • I beg to differ; the behaviour displayed in this video is exactly the reason that IAATO guidelines were drafted. She is clearly touching and restraining the bird - a complete violation of the guidelines. The clip would more appropriately be titled "How not to behave around wildlife"

I also have to ask - was it really necessary? DId it enhance her experience to handle the bird? Could she not have enjoyed this wilderness and this wildlife without imposing herself on the environment?

  • OK, so next time I sit down amongst a group of wild birds and they start coming over to me, I'll get up and frighten them off - DUH of course I sat as still as I could - I was mesmerised by what had happened - WTF do you think I would have done. I'm sick of the naysayers on this. If IAATO isn't happy they can contact me directly.

  • I agree with you F. I had penguins right next to me, they weren't bothered at all just going about thier business. Imposing yourself on the wildlife - what drivel. Just another twat whose prolly never been there

  • beautifull video so much peace in it :-)

  • So beautiful. That chick looked like is was trying to tuck itself under your arm to get warm.

There is a tale from Antartica about Emperor chicks who were rescued from a tide crack and they too tucked themselves under the armpits of their rescuers. So much so they did not want to leave either and they started following the rescuers when they were placed back down again on the ice. It was thought that some even went back into the tide crack in hope they might be rescued again lol.

  • Love your music, it's just beautiful, thank you for posting!!

  • Too cute! Never seen anything quite like it.

  • I've read that penguins are so curious that they'll come to a human, no problem.

  • Penguins are protected under the Antarctic Treaty and the Antarctic Conservation Act - this means nobody (including tourists) are supposed to touch them... period.

  • The rules are that you can't go within 9 feet of wildlife but if they come to you thats different. Thats why I sat on a rock for half an hour and made no movement towards them. They came to me. No rules broken.

  • Wonderful.

    This is a idilic place.

    Greetings from Spain.

  • If the penguins went to a warm place will they die? A warm place like 15C ... around that.

  • MMM??? Not sure, guess that happens in zoos around the world, but I really could't answer that - I'm off to google it. f

  • I'll be waiting for your reply! I really love penguins! :D I want a pet penguin. :).

  • Hi, you will find penguins in every climate - even tropical - but they have adapted to their environment and so Antarctic penguins such as Adelie (in this video) will need to live in a very cold climate only. Google 'penguin habitat'.

  • You're so lucky to have to chance to be so close to them! I wish I could pet one of those penguins in Antarctica, they look so cute!

  • Tell us more on your Antarctica trip.

  • Hi Tayyuetsian, I went to Antarctica for 3 weeks on Orion (expedition cruise) - we went into the Antarctic Circle, and as far as you can go by boat. Some of this footage is from Inexpressible Island and anoother island that may possibly have never been landed on. The reason I sat still for so long amongst the penguins was because you can't go within 3 metres of wildlife - but they can choose to come near you. My toes were frozen. It Took half an hour in the shower to feel them again. f

  • WOW Fiona I what to put more than just awsome in the ratings. I think when I'm going to bulletin these on Myspace so everyone gets chance to see them.

  • Nice video! 5 stars

  • The coolest video ever.

  • Awesome video Fiona! Your great for what you do!

  • Great video and music fiona, say hello to steve and the boys.

    Rick and Barb

  • I have read the comments and people can call it what the will. It makes no difference to me.

Fiona, you are awesome to take the time to interact and spend some quality time with these adorable cuddly lookin penguins. How many can say that they have done that, or anything interesting in that way? I find your video delightful and pleasntly relaxing. Thank you!!

    Peace

  • Aww... the penguins are so cute. I want to go see some penguins out in the wild some day

  • Hello, what kind of animals are pengiuns in general? Are they trusty towards humans or did you had to do a slow approach over a long period of time? In either case they seem to be very lovable creatures and as a lion and cheetah lover i can say that i understand a little of how a person can have a connection with an animal. Very nice video.

  • Hi Sunnycheetah, I had to sit still for half an hour - I sang as well and they were really intrigued by the sound. So long as I didn't move, they came over, then the trust built up. They are very skittish, but very inquisitive. f

  • Hehe, every penguin has to find his song :) Very nice and thanks for sharing. If you love animals, might be worth looking at my vids as well. Sitting for half an hour, what a reward for freezing your back off!

  • they got to like happy feet

  • thanks for video from somewhere in oklahoma from an ol hippy pengophile who probably will never get to do the penguin thing like you did and definitely will never rise to your piano level. i love classical but have a little trouble with new age. so response to cp225 gave me some hope that you've got a bit of a rocker in you too.

  • Hi Bwendo - you bet your bottom dollar baby I got some rhythm happening too - go to

myspace(dotcom)/littlehartleymusic and listen to ICE - Piano Slightly Chilled - its classically derived piano rock. Sorry, had to write the URL that way - you can't post web addresses - but you know what I mean. f

  • Hi, again! Where were you guys? What part of the ant artica ? Bye for now, Ruth Anne As if it matters, it is all cold right!

  • Hi Ruth- it was minus about 30 and we were in the Antarctic Circle somewhere near Inexplicable Island - can't remember the exact island name - probably no-one has ever landed there before. BLOOD COLD!! f

  • How cold is it and what kind of penguins are they?

  • They are Adelie Penguins - and the temperature on our landings varied between minus 15 and minus 30 degrees. COLD!!!! My toes were seriously numb. Adelie penguins have interesting behaviour and are quite comedic to watch. I wrote a peice of music specifically about them. If you go to my website and listen to Angel Above my Piano track 2 'Dance of the Penguins'. Hope that helps. fiona

  • Please tell me your web site. I have found a new love. I raise baby Parrots. This is my passion! Sun Conures and Blue Crown Conures and Parrotlets. I do have a baby Orange Wing Amazon who is 2 mons. old. Is the seal dead in the video? How long did you stay out there? I never knew that they were so small! Bye for now, Ruth Anne from Roberts, Wisconsin

  • No the seal isnt dead, I was there too :)They are just slugs! Antarctic Lounge Lizards. haha...also to Alphamale 69 below, that rather fetching woman IS Fiona!

  • They dont have any predators?

  • the woman playing the piano was rather fetching!

  • aren't penguins not really that timid around humans? i couldn't imagine someone sitting on the frozen ground so long waiting for penguins if they're normally human friendly...

  • Good point. I'm calling bullshit on this 'penguin whisperer.'

  • Thats the whole point dude - its not bullshit - I froze my arse to get this vid. So bullshit off.

  • hahaha!

  • Oh shut up if you can not say any thing nice!

  • That was really amazing...

  • Simply amazing!

  • 2:55 was kind of gross.

  • That seal is perfectly alive - just not moving - they just laze around sunbaking like giant slugs - but he's definately a breathing one!!!! (it is Summer in Antarctica, so sunbaking is technically possible! lol).

  • cool!
