Should IW have made that statement? probably not. However, I think the press took this out of context and successfully blew it out of proportion and the public responded like puppets.
For one, we don't hear the question, but based on the different reactions, it's easy enough to guess what it was. SR tried to downplay it. IW probably exasperated and feeling directly targeted decided against all common sense to refute the allegations on the spot, hence the unfortunate statement.
