Im a angler myself, im in no way fan of tacking sharks from shore. Also there is a reason why it's illegal someplaces in the world, so to me the graffing and pulling on shore is not cool. It should be done by boat, it's safer for the animals and the anglers. Besides that, great days fishing, 14 sharks in a day is not bad at all. I so far only have a single 3½ ft porbeagle shark under my belt.
Every bad comment is crap. I do the same with bull sharks in Australia for the Queensland Fisheries. Either the hole from the gaff or the hole from the hold rope will heal with in 48 hours or so. There is minimal blood lose when gaffing the fin so the chance of a bigger shark attacking after the release is small. Also the long term benefits of taging sharks is well worth the capture of a few. Save your comments for the japs killing 20,000tone of whale per year. think about it.
@Britcenturion Not sure what the make was but the first time we went, they were big like converted boat reels - looked similar to the Penn Senator - with 50lb mono. Second time was smaller reels with braid. I didn't like the braid - very unforgiving & we lost a lot of fish. So, mono would mean the big boat-style reels for me.
Not cool ... Sad ending for those poor animals. There is no point posting butcheries on a public domain, it's a showcase for our sport and in that case, a pretty negative one.
If you like your stuff you'd better keep it for you next time, I understand it can be great memories for you but that's not col for people watching.
By the way it's never too late to change and I hope the next one you catch won't be gaffed like these ones. I don't blame you but I encourage you to be better next time.
Sorry, but you are so wrong! Each fish was tagged on behalf of the Namibian Fisheries Authority and released unharmed. The gaffing in the dorsal fin is an unfortunate necessity, but it does not cause any lasting damage. I am very much in favour of conservation and this exercise and ones like it help track the migratory habits of species to facilitate better understanding and appropriate conservation measures. I hope you, and others who leap to the wrong conclusion, now understand this better.
@wilshb So that's cool, I know gaffing a fish is not a big deal especially cause there is no chance of infection in saltwater. It seems I've jumped to a bad conclusion, please appologize. The video just doesn't suggest a favourable end to the fishes, lol.
Keep going like this, but next time try to post a more "sexy" video ! Cheers.
"Fun" is not the word. I've never classed myself as a serious fisherman - though I've fished since age 11 - but the fishing in Namibia is just awesome!
They are transported on the top of the 4x4 - or vertically in rests fitted to the car, so transporting them isn't a problem. I don't think your usual beachcasters would fit the bill - but by all means give it a whirl. You'd need a reel with a lot of capacity - I think all the ones we used were modified boat reels. The hire of the gear was all included in the price, so I wouldn't bother taking any of your own.
Cool. Would you mind me asking who you booked it with and how much it cost - was thinking of going if I could build up enough cash and brownie points!
Booked through Terence Clark. I've just booked another for Feb - 6 nights, 5 days fishing, 8,000 Namib Dollars. You get B&B, all tackle & bait provided, guide with 4x4, sandwiches, beer, drinks etc.
sandwich harbour, looks the same as when i was there, what a place and the bronzies are not in short supply to say the very least, video brings back good memories, only shame is you can only go there on a handful of days a year, would be nice if this venue was open all the time. Cant wait to get back down that way soon.
Right. It was the first time I've been to Namibia. The fishing for most of the two weeks was a bit hit & miss. Up to that day, we'd only caught three bronzies between the four of us & we were starting to get a bit despondent. Sandwich harbour made the whole holiday! I'd go again tomorrow if I could build up the brownie points!

what make of rods were ye fishing with?
somedose 2 years ago
I think they were 14ft one-piece Kevlar rods. Terence, our guide had them custom-made in either Walvis Bay or Swakupmund
wilshb 2 years ago
One piece?! That must make transporting them 'interesting'. Would you reckon a heavy ground conoflex, zziplex, century or greys would suffice?
