My girlfriend, whose met with Gambale a few times, tells me that Gambale apparently invented sweep picking - any real validity to this statement? I mean, from the looks of it he is pretty damn good at it...
@Lydianshadow hmm it does look like it's been finished with something, definitely a lot shinier than most fret boards, could just be the lights though
@Lydianshadow it's made out of Ebony, I own an AES FG. I also own a Custom PRS that was ordered from the factory and then I had the fretts taken out, new ones put in that were bigger for more sustain, then I had the guitar put through a plex for leveling the frettboard to a 1000 of an inch and guess what? The Yamaha Frank Gambale kicks it's ass. they did some trick stuff. tremelo is attached to the neck, the Pickups are mounted to the body "no springs" all of this was done for sustain
you cant compare gambale with govan two different players and styles , i love both the players and gambale has took sweep to the max , complete legend
@Bastubeer Well, I think the best term would be economy picking. You can see him sweep here and there, but obviously he goes to alternating picking with diatonic phrases.
this shows great dexterity but there's no feeling in this "music" whatsoever. Its exercise only. Like jogging. Guitar jogging. He does play songs which are killer and shows me I suck---
i think that this video can make two things..1/ ..start practicing every day ..or 2/ never, not only play..but even have second thoughts of touching a guitar again..choose side please..ha ha..amazing..he is a computer!!!!!!!!!
I think it might be the other way around. I've switched to heavy guage strings and I got out a thin pick and sweeps work much better. I used to use 8 guage with a jazz 3 for legato and was cool to sweep with but hard to sweep fast like this. Gambale is insane.
that shit is fretless wow lol, that took me a sec. BEFORE YOU CALL ME A DUMBFUCK LOOK CLOSELY!!!! A. one of his frets, its somewhere between 1-4, has a large curve in it, dead giveaway, (they r simply markers) B. he landed on one of the "markers" and a clean ass sound came out.
Some players have started calling it economy picking but Gambale calls it sweep picking.
It's all based on having odd and even notes on a string. If the player is playing from high to low or low to high there are a odd number of notes but, when the player needs to turn the shape around they must use a even number then after the shape is turned the player goes back to odd numbers of notes on a string.
Like three notes, then two notes to turn then back to three.
This odd even notes on a string holds true for both scale shapes and arpeggio shapes.
The reason some call it economy picking is because when a player starts to get it down they can play just as fast or faster than any other picking style but with less picking hand effort.
The problem is, it's not easy to master for 99.99% of players. So, calling it economy picking only holds true for the players that really master it.
Dude, what is sweep picking? Basically continuing with one picking motion in the direction you're going when crossing strings. That's all economy picking is, just not necessarily limited to one note per string. So economy picking is in essence sweep picking and sweep picking may as well be called economy picking cuz its very purpose is to make picking arpeggios more economical.
Haha you guys are retards if you don't get that simple concept. Economy picking came from the idea of sweep picking, everyone knows that. Nobody even has the words to disagree with me.
Really it seems like the two come hand in hand. Both enable you to play much faster and with less effort. One is for arpeggios and one is for more than one note per string. Hell the theory behind the two are the same get to the next string as quickly and effortlessly as possible.
im not tryin to sound like a know-it-all prick just for the record lol. but economy picking is kind of like a mix between sweep picking and alt. picking.
economy picking is the same shit as sweep picking but just between two strings. same exact technique. in fact, I've heard plenty of knowledgable guitarists call two string economy picking licks 'sweeping'. There's no point to really argue but that's how you would break it down.
I actually see his technique as a mix between Sweeping and Economy. If you look at what he does, its such a weird technique; so effortless. But it makes perfect sense
yeah that's exactly how I've looked at it. I've been trying to mimic it but have mostly failed horribly xD however it's almost doubled the speed of my 3 notes per string runs.
yes very true frank gambale and allan holdsworth the most technically exirting musicians alot of theory but even more for holdsworth you should check him out in my book holdsworth is the best living guitarist in the world.
i have had the opportunity to play with him at git gambale has alot more theory knowledge but i like both equal.i have studied holdsworth theory as well great stuff and makes alot of sence playing and building chords off the scale notes!!!!
hes at Gambales level of clean but with the playing skills of Shawn Lane i would say 12 steps above the two the only thing is hes mainly a teacher i hope he comes out with another album soon so we can hear some of the sicks music ever
I know Marshall and have e-mail him a few different times. Marshall is a very good player but not near as polished as a Holdsworth, Gambale or Lane.
He has strong technique but, has very few songs to show for it. I would enjoy seeing Marshall try and get up on strange with Chick Corea and improvise over the highly complex melodic and harmonic ideas Corea comes up with live.
Gambale has been doing it for 20 years. Picking and playing are not the same.
I think you miss the point. I am not saying Holdsworth, Gambale or Lane are better at guitar than Marshall or anyone for that matter.
I used the word polished not better. By polished I mean range, and being able to play different styles very well at a high level.
The point I was making is, there are many players that can run through scales and arpeggios at whatever tempo, ask them to improvise with Chick Corea live and they will fall apart.
As a matter of fact I know I am not missing my own point. Marshall does not have very many of his own musical works out there for the pubic to hear and judge.
Holdsworth, Gambale and Lane do. Based on that, it's rather clear a player like Gambale is a far more well polished player than Marshall.
Again, in your first post you talked about Marshall playing fast and clean...who cares, that's great and all but try and improvise with Chick live and see which is more difficult to do.
look at your first post you typed "hes at Gambales level of clean but with the playing skills of Shawn Lane i would say 12 steps above"
Is that not a classical form of comparing..I mean are you joking or what? The point I have tried to show you is picking speed or playing clean is fine, it's technical mastery but, it has little to do with truly playing.
You don't see Marshall posting videos of himself trying to improvise through very complex chord changes..I wonder why?
You need to learn not everyone is going to agree with you in life and they will point out why they don't agree which I have in posting back to "Phygian12"
I only used Gambale and his playing as my examples. Now, I will use Lane, there is no way coming or going that Marshall is at the same level Shawn Lane was in terms of picking notes at a fast tempo.
Phrygian12 over stepped with the technical comparison. I then just pointed out that learning to improvise well is harder than technique.
I made the point that talking about Marshall on this video is rather silly. Why even bring it up? Let Marshall prove himself like Gambale has and Lane did, then make any kind of comparison you like.
At this point, there is no comparison, end of story
haha so easy anyone could do it if practicing every day until he dies:D

I only used Gambale and his playing as my examples. Now, I will use Lane, there is no way coming or going that Marshall is at the same level Shawn Lane was in terms of picking notes at a fast tempo.
Phrygian12 over stepped with the technical comparison. I then just pointed out that learning to improvise well is harder than technique.
sweepfast 3 years ago
just to let you know i was talking about technique, not musical in anyway
when i said 12 steps above im stating this cause Marshall can actually grab Lane
trust me the lessons Harrison gives are really complex finger runs
i was going to get lessons from him in 06 but took music theory instead(plus school, girlfriend and the fact that it was a 3 hour drive)
a fellow friend took lessons from him and his stuff is really hard to play(keep in mind im talking about technique)
Phrygian12 3 years ago
as for comparing Musicians
i find it pointless
its like trying to convince people that Magenta is the best color in the world
like you said "not everyone is going to agree with you in life"
now lets end it here like Real Musicians

just to make sure we dont cause any more arguemnts with our selfs or any one els
comparing skills is understandable
ex.Herman Li's Economy picking is it smoother then Frank?(thats a no brainier)
now Marty Friedman's Music against Shawn Lane's
how can you compare music? you cant
i love Friedman he dosnt play complex stuff at all but his songwritting is amazing
