cont'd....His life story makes him easily one of the most interesting people of the 20th century. William Burroughs moved to Tangeiers in the 1950's after reading Bowles' novel, just so could meet Bowles. It took a while but he and Bowles became life long friends. Paul Bowles died in 1999, aged 88.
well, i read back 3 pages and i didn't see it mentioned so here goes. this track is a musical interpretation of The Sheltering Sky written by the ex-patriot U.S. author, Paul Bowles in 1947. The novel is set in the Sahara, and is about obsession and madness. Bowles was always happy to admit that the writing of this book and others was always helped by the smoking of of Kif (dope) or the ingestion .marjoun (sweets made fron dope). Bowles lived most of his life in Tangier, Morroco.
I danced to this tonight on the darkest night of the year & nat'l dance day in US (even though Cdn) & it felt Great!!!!! under the stars on my back deck....gorgeous!! <3
So solemn. This tune is a prayer, you might say. I think that when music has such a strong spiritual element to it, that music is sacred, is about the sacred, acknowledging the sacred, speaking for its glory, etc. Awesome, this tune--King Crimson meditates for their audience--all one must do is clear one's mind and let the musical meditation enter through one's ears and transport and transform oneself, if just for a bit. The antidote to banal, deadening music. This is precious music/art.
@robymn Thanks very much...I appreciate it, and you sure are right about this song!
Maybe you are a musician yourself--in any case, you have exquisite taste...lots of folks over here, (in the U.S.), might not even have patience for a tune like this...("No words? I don't 'get' it!") Hopefully, I am wrong, maybe so--but it seems like KC is bigger outside the U.S.
I am so moved. In a complete state of awe at what these masterful musicians have done and are capable of. Thank you for sharing this. Having spent a good part of a wayward youth listening to them, this reminds me of a colourful, wonderful handful of friends.
The thing about RF is that he has influenced so many bands and genres but no one sounds like him... If that makes sense. The Bob Dylan of prog, jazz/rock, pre-techno... Doesn't hurt that he has a percussion genius like Bill Bruford attached 2 his hip either.
such an odd, strange, compelling, otherworldly piece -- I heard a concerto by Rachmaninoff that was sort of the same: solemn, even melancholy music, but seriously grand; as if one had been through something real in one's life
@ffairlane57 Very interesting comment. I can't compare the two bands--not aware of Nickelback's stuff--but to my lights, KC is hugely talented. Guess we disagree.... I don't think this tune is "shit." I think it is transcenedent. I promise to check out Nickelback, though, and compare.
I hope you aren't one of those guys who needs music to whakc you hard before you can respond to it--this is subtl music, but that doesn't diminish its pofundity or greatness.
@ffairlane57 I compared the two bands, and I like KC much more. I do appreciate more mainstream American alternative folk and country influenced rock, but the good stuff, which to my lights is The Replacements, for example, or Westerberg, or some of Ryan Adams best, and Lucinda Williams, and maybe an artist here or there. some other folks.
I hate to say this about any band, but my take on Nickelback is they are doing it for the money...
Their stuff doesn't strike me as deeply felt. My take
@ffairlane57 I think Nickelback is slick, frankly--I am sure you'll dsagree, but I see them as commercial, and not bringing anything much personal to the table--probably they have paid serious dues in life of one sort or another, certainly deserve respect as people, but as artists, I think they are cashing in on what is known to be saleable, are not taking chances, and are yet to develop a very distinctive voice of their own, based on the three tunes I have heard.
@ffairlane57 I don't mean to upset you, but that's my honest take on the two bands...YouTube is an open forum, and I love KC so much I decided to defend them, and had never heard Nickelback so I checked them out. You have every right to love whichever bands you choose, and even dislike KC, but if you would be interested in a demonstration of sheer technical talent, check out KC's "Frame By Frame." If nothing else, KC can play.
I happen to feel they can compose, too. I think KC is great
@ffairlane57 Hey--it wasn't needed for me to respond to your comment--it is hidden, and I apologize. I did because I was upset, in the moment, by your using such unkind language to describe a tune I think of as sacred music--"The Sheltering Sky" is precious art, in my esteem. But:KC doesn't need me to "defend" them, especially from comments which are hidden, and you probably don't need my critical opinion.

Seasoning for my soul. This is tasty stuff. Sucks me in still after hearing it for over 25 years. Sheesh - has it really been that long? Saw shows in So-Cal in the early 80s that were beyond amazing. Fripp, Belew, Bruford, Levin. Long Live The King!
When listening to TOOL you can hear elements of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple. TOOL has always admitted that they've been also influenced by the progressive extreme-thrash metal band, Meshuggah. But the majority of their style and improvisation is pure King Cimson. Wow, Robert Fripp is killin' it on his guitar synthesizer!!! Amazing spiritual, experiemental song!!! I'm hooked!!!!
Now I see where TOOL get their influence from. I heard about them on occasions from reading TOOL's interview and I also saw some clips fo this band on TOOL's autobiographical documentary DVD. Wow, Robert Fripp is killin' it on his guitar synthesizer!!! Amazing spiritual, experiemental song!!! I'm hooked!!!!
you cannot choose to hold every grain of sand at once--witness the universe in a single grain instead--observe the ocean through the same grain of sand--it contains the ocean and you are even larger than the grain of sand--just the same, this song is as big as the ocean--it occupies the coastline of consciousness--seagull guitars overhead--setting sun bass line--subaquatic rhythms--four human deities--robert, tony, adrian, and bill--create a song version of the Pacific. Well done, boys.........
it is impossible to lie to King Crimson. King Crimson is deaf to untruths. it is impossible for King Crimson to lie. King Crimson is mute for untruths. King Crimson is a prayer that terrifies the unholy. King Crimson baffles the Pope, but is understood imediately by every child, as every child yet knows how to dialogue with the Creator. King Crimson respects the sacred, and is the sacred. In a Western lands and times defiled, hold fast to King Crimson: don't ever forget!
@Ieghairdude Why, thank you. I am just a huge fan of a really terrific band--King Crimson is the best Prog-Rock band. They validate the genre: take them out, whaddaya got? Not much at all. Ya got stuff that appeals to nerds. I was just kind of riffing, trying to sound like a real beatnik, or poet, talking about a band I hugely admire. But your contribution, man--you really went "all out"--just one word, but "Nerd"--what a word! I bow before you. Anyone like you--you gotta be very cool.
@Ieghairdude Don't you think it is kind of risky to use the word, "Nerd"? It is kind of like Mickey Mouse calling Donald Duck, "Two-Dimensional," if you know what I mean--anyone who uses it is in danger of being seen as a nerd themselves. There is some flakiness, maybe, or pseudo-beat poesy in what I wrote, but when I wrote it, I was writing as earnest tribute to a band I love. That simply has to be cooler than grade-school name-calling.
@Ieghairdude Yeah. I can be kind of thin-skinned. Dumb of me not to know you were joking, probably, and dumb anyway to respond, though I love to write, and jump at the opportunity to write, heh, heh.
It isn't healthy to take things, especially oneself, too seriously--maybe I do.
Supercool music, though, huh?

SupernalOne 10 months ago
@SupernalOne This tune does have a melancholy sensibility in it. It says a lot of things, perhaps.
I saw an interview with Allen Ginsberg, the Beat poet, where he said, "The pain of life is so deep that it is joyous."
I feel like that was implicit in Bowles' novel, too--a theme in the book.
And I think it is voiced in this miraculous tune, too.
Whatever KC had in mind when they wrote this tune, it is one of the deepest meditations in contemporary musical culture, by my lights.
