holy shit, you do realise that the tube MP is a microphone preamp or a DI? not a guitar pedal. a guitar outputs a very low impedence signal therefor a guitar amp expects to see one, which is why it sounds super distorted and crappy. the tube mp outputs at a line level signal.
@scaryfried I do realize that its a microphone tube preamp.... as well as an instrument preamp. It doesn't sound super distorted & crappy because of the preamp. It sounds pushed over the top because of the combination of the distortion/octave pedal & the preamp set to a high output. That's the sound I was looking for. I've been using this same preamp for years now on a clean channel set to a lower output & it gives a lot of extra warmth. It just depends on what sound you're looking for. Relax.
The beginning of the video sounds awesome ...real hendrixy ... Later-on ...I think it was just the mic gettin over loaded but yeah, dunlop octavio fuzz are one of
I think you'll get the most out of a fuzz if you use it with a clean amp setting. They came out in the sixties to offer an alternative to that Fender Twin sound, and they come alive that way.......too much distortion combined just becomes mud.
I played with those danelectro's they're nice. I bought a few really cheap. Got alot of use out of 'em, so did a couple of friends of mine. Good playin' dude, keep rockin'.
The reason it gets super noisy is because the amp is already overdriven. He presses the pedal and now he has two overdrives going at once. That is why it starts to sound so bad. This pedal is great if you have a clean amp and want a gritty vintage type overdrive with an added octave option. They are a cheap pedal but for the money it is great. Search for other FRENCH TOAST videos and you will see the difference.
Actually, the pedal has the option of using the the octave with or without the fuzz added. I happened to be using it without the pedals fuzz, so this pedal is just plain noisey. Its much worse, like you said, if you use its fuzz and another distortion or overdrive. The fuzz in the pedal is useless to me. Its just too light and pingy and doesn't have much depth or warmth. Now, using it on a clean channel and with the octave only is nice, but I just haven't found a practical use for it yet.
Actually, it's the reverse... you can use the fuzz with or without the octave. You cannot use the octave alone, though you can turn down the fuzz with the knob.
If you're able to get the octave alone without any fuzz, then you possibly have a defective pedal.
Yeah, this is a very noisey pedal. It has its purpose, but there are much, much better octave pedals out there. It is fun to play around with though. But yeah, it is definitely noisey.
The octave up effect is barely noticable; a little advice here.......use your neck pickup, roll your treble back about half way, and focus on the upper registers...you'll notice a huge difference. Thanks for the demo-
Truthfully, rolling off any highs, especially on this guitar just makes it sound muddier anywhere on the neck. My strat was out of commission at the moment, but the difference between the two guitars is huge. The strat really responds to the octave up and when you roll the highs down it gives a really great mello octave sound. Thanks, Matt
No, its actually made of some kind of light metal, probably aluminum. The buttons are plastic of course, but unless you beat this thing up, it should last you a while. Oh, and this Les Paul sounds sooo much better with new strings on it. The difference is pretty incredible actually. I'll put up some more demos soon. Thanks, Matt
Yeah, its a little too muddy with the les paul. My strat does sound really nice through it though. It was out of commission at the time though, so i couldn't demo it. Maybe i will soon.
Nice demo. How does the French Toast sound with the Fuzz all the way down on a clean amp playing open chords? I'm looking for something analog I can get that Neil Young "Ragged Glory" tone.
unfortunately it makes kind of a pingy bright sound, that i don't like. I 'm sure you could eq it to make it sound like you want, buy i would suggest looking into a higher end fuzz octave. This one is really fun to play with, but its pretty noisey. I hope you find the tone your looking for! God Bless, Matt
Yeah, i was gonna, but it was out of commision at the time. Had to have some work done to it, but hopefully, i'll be able to upload the fuzz octave emo using my strat soon.
I linked both my demos of this pedal. This pedal is actually pretty cool if you dial in the right settings. Anyways check out my demos.

your sound is crazy :) you've got a nice control over that over-the-top distortion. I think 'bout getting such a preamp for myself. Cheers!

Yes, doing those three things will make a fuzz based octave up more apparent on any guitar...Pauls, Strats and all the rest.
