I don't mean to sound a dick, but CAKE must be really depressed or something... because all of their songs are based off someone not loving, or he's in love, or his broken heart, or his girl cheating him,,,, sorry... but basicly true. :|
@bobmama1234 Look at the large majority of popular songs, they are all like that. Songs about love are the easiest to write because love is a common theme that everyone understands. Love lifts everyone up and shoots everyone down.
@bobmama1234 um... listen to A LOT of the rest of their stuff, and then listen to A LOT of other music. You will find that Cake writes about a lot more than love and lost love. You will also find that A LOT of music in the world is about love and lost love. Other songs by Cake: Nugget, Satan is My Motor, Race Car Ya Yas, The Distance, and MANY MANY MORE. I don't mean to lecture, but it's a common trend in music, as it has been since popular music began, to sing about love and the like.
Music receptiveness is certainly subjective, but this does not meet the standards of Willie Nelson, by any means. Still, it's nice to know that Cake appreciates Willie.
I feel the same way about most covers, and especially those done by Cake. But let us not forget that the intellectual property belongs to Willie (in this case, for example)
@Swordmaster10 : I agree. I would call myself a pretty big Willie fan...and I've always liked Cake as well. But this cover takes the instrumental part of the song to a new level. And I have always loved Willie's unique vocal style...but the Cake singer is pretty awesome vocally in his own right. All adds up to a cover that (for many), is even better than the original. I'm currently loving Phosphorescent's full album of Willie covers too! As did Willie himself.
First and foremost, I adore Cake and Fashion Nugget is one of those rare albums where you can listen to it from cover to cover. But I agree, the original by Willie Nelson is better.
I just don't think they were serious when they covered Willie's version. In fact, it sounds like they stopped taking themselves seriously in the last third of the album. Listen to all the oh-yeahs, they start to sound sarcastic later on. I think this is what makes the album so good: no pretence, just fun.
@monstermar24@Swordmaster10 well, i think both versions are great. Each one in its context. Each one in its age. Both voices, both instruments are great, but, mainly: the feelings that both versions pass to us are beautiful!
@monstermar24 No one is claiming it is better. It is purely taste. I, honestly, can't stand mainstream country. I like the lyrics, and this is a nice alternative to country, in my opinion.
Is the original Willy Nelson?? While I LOVE CAKE, nothing is ever as good as Willie Nelson!!! I'm 31 and I was 18 and graduating HS the year Fashion Nugget came out and I still like Nelson better :)
this song is straight f'in truth. if this song doesn't strike a chord in you, then you have neither had testicles or a girlfriend. long live the CAKE.
I have ONE (1) individual I'd REALLY like to dedicate this song too....ooooh, could I ever, but I'll have to be bigger than her and leave it alone! But, hearing this and thinking of her I could throw my monitor out the window! RRRRRRR!!!!! >:()
heh, makes me think of someone, a bad bad person... ;-;

How, how is this better than Willie? Have you listened to Willie? I like Cake, no question about that. But Willie takes the cake.
monstermar24 2 years ago 4
It's better to some because of the different instrumentals. I like this version better and I've heard the wille version.

Actually while it's done in a sad sort of key the lyrics are pretty funny I think, sort of a melancholic comedy.
