  • W.L. was my great-grand father. Guerry Boone Stribling was my grandfather, I guess we're related Prefontaine! Stribling is my middle name :)

  • Young Stribling is my grandfather's first cousin (what's that second cousin once-removed?). Anyways, I have heard stories my entire life of how I resembled Young, but it was not until seeing this footage that I can appreciate my "cousin's" boxing skills. Thank you for bringing out this footage.

P.S. Cheers to Jack Sharkey's great-nephew...I think it is great to be able to experience these bouts even now. Back in that day, the best man always won (unless the fight was bought first).

  • At age 28 he had 256 wins with 128 KO and only 16 losses with 14 draws. HOLY SHIT !!!!!!

  • @MortalSyntax thats what im saying .why i havent heard of this guy before idk

  • lisburn?my grandad was from there trying to get a family reuion together for her 50th birthday next year.robert sharkey, my mum is lynette margarette sharkey

  • Great to see video of Young Stribling, he lived a fascinating life in his brief 28 years. He reminds me of another light-heavy who would come along in another decade,Billy Conn, although Conn was not a KO specialist. Similar build and styles though.

Incidentally, you cannot compare boxers from another era to recent fighters maybe certain eras or decades but not a different generation.

These men were the tops in there day and I think we should just admire and respect them for what they were.

  • Stribling wasn't that hard a puncher either.

His early career was something of a sham, as he knocked out his chauffer in every tank town in the southern states. Billy conn was a league or two above him, and had a much more rounded style.

  • Young Stribling fighting record:

    Total fights: 289

    Wins: 256

    Win by knockout: 128

  • great upload

you can see Stibling's great counterpunching abilities in this. he was just too light to hang with true heavyweights. Sharkey's jab too strong

  • Neither boxer appears to have a clear advantage in this particular video. But, there is some clever feinting and a good deal of rough infighting on display. Their respective boxing styles do not make make for an aesthetically appealing match. Sometimes that happens in matchmaking, nonetheless, these two heavyweight boxers were among the most talented performers in their era

    (1920s/1930s)..

  • jack sharkey is my great uncle

he taught my father how to box and my father taught me

its great to see his videos here

  • I hope one day all Lithuanians and Samogitians of the USA, Canada and all over the World will return to Lithuania and Samogitia... That would be a great thing! Lithuania and Samogitia are missing a lot its sons and daughters. Come back please, we need you!

  • Sure, these guys grabbed a lot, but it was the 20's and there was still a certain amount of wrestling in boxing and boxing training. Stribling was really a light heavy who was stepping up against Sharkey. He is almost completely forgotten today, even in his native Georgia. In 10 short years, he fought 287 times with a record of 256-16-15. They might have called him "Willie the Clutch" but he was active as hell and sometimes fought bigger men.

  • tyson!tyson!tyson!bring on a real FIGHTER,not a hugger,a real mugger!!!!

  • You don't know boxing. These guys may not have been pretty but they were scientists in the ring back then. I've seen alot of holding in some of Tyson's fights too.

  • yeah alot of guys holdin up what's left of his opponents, this is science?sheesh, the science of grapplin

  • You just don't know boxing kid...

  • seen alot of guyz holdin for dear life while mikey beat em 2 death..as eh wud either of these guyz

  • thats it huh nothing but abuse but i am right, these guys wud get blown out by mikey, hate him or not

  • mikey? is that tyson? who calls tyson mikey?

  • sharkey threw the title to the mob too.Carnera was a big clumsy phoney,a nice and brave guy apparantly but his ring record is a fuckin joke and cannot hold up to any kind of scrutiny.

  • Sharkey deny it several times; Primo in his top form was a threat and he KO Sharkey, that went destroyed by Luis after that then retire.

  • what a clutchfest; they both learned from jack johnson that one survives by holding.

Clay learned it, too. The Lip doesn't look so bad when compared to this.

    Fab post, though. Thanxx.

  • Great stuff. Sharkey is one of the most under-rated world heavyweight champions in History. He lived to be over 90 as did his great rival Max Schmeling. Boxing certainly never did them any harm!

  • Pendlemania: How can u say Sharkey was great?

Primo Carnera who was horrible knocked Sharkey out. Sharkey was like a amature when he fought Louis. In another words Sharkey stunk. Living old does not make one great???? Educate yourself before you make stupid comments

  • when Sharkey fought Louis, he was past his day as a viable contender..Carnera beat some decent fighters due to his strength..and any heavyweight has the potential to knock you out if they land right. Carnera was sloppy and left his hands wide (poor guard).but remember he beat either the European or British champion..and was no fix

  • Sharkey was a great fighter in his day. Like the other guy said, Sharkey was way past his prime when he fought Louis. He gave Dempsey a good run for his money. Dempsey may have been past his prime as well, but it's Jack Dempsey after all, and who could ever be ashamed of losing to Dempsey. As far as Carnera goes, who knows? Maybe the fix was in on that one too, as in most of Carnera's fights.

  • Great footage! Never knew this fight existed.
