  • it's first time I see an english player that good. he's better that Beckham, Rooney, u name them!

  • what a fucking goal by John Aldridge at 1:13 the tekkers was out of this world

  • without a doubt the only english player worth watching in my lifetime. Unfortunately I only got to see him from 94 onwards, but definitely a brilliant player.

  • This man (and my oldest brother) are the reasons why I became a Liverpool supporter! My 1st Liverpool shirt had Barnes 10 on the back, in fact every Liverpool shirt I ever had did! I modelled my game on him. None of this step-overs, tricks and flicks lark. Just pure pace, quick feet and dropping the shoulder at the right time. LEGEND!!!!

  • Barnes > Messi & Ronaldo

  • Remember every single goal brilliant incredible, never really replaced barnes.my hero!

  • one of the best players in English football history..easily in the top 3..along with Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush :D

  • JOnnhyy plss come out of retirment and show downing how its done.

  • Barne's Made me Support Liverpool in 1987 when i was 6.And i still to this day, Say in my head when i'm playing football BARNES and it's BARNES,BARNES,BAARNESSSS STILL BARNES.

The youth of today have Messi,But there's no one like BARNESSSSSS

    Thanks for the vid mate.

  • @D33VD33 remember the tv advert ''i want to be like john barnes''

  • @kisamakara Narrr...i can't remember it ..i will try find it.

  • 1:16 HEY LOOK ITS KING KENNY !!! :D

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 if united is so good why couldn't they beat Blackburn? Whose the loser now? Haha

  • @NDIrishhsirIDN We're joint top of the league!!!Where are you???????HAHA

  • There should be no arguing, we should all be here viewing the greatness that is John Barnes.

  • And look at some of the surfaces he played on. Imagine him on any premier league ground now. (Thanks for the post, johnbaile - makes me feel old.)

  • Fuckin legend, fuckin class. If only he never had the injuries woulda stayed on the left wing for years. One if my all time heroes 'Digger' Barnes.

  • how funny looking at Dalgish in real ground action. Anyway Liverpool were so so far better than what they are now.. Some traffic football like this unseen for so long

  • Truly amazing!!!! World class

  • A great champion, really.

    Ciao from Italy :-D

  • sweet jesus!!! how good was barnsey! what a player.

  • Absolutely brilliant this. Best version of the PvD tune so far. Any idea what edit it is?

  • Two wordz "FUCKING CLASS"

  • its a shame barnes didnt join liverpool earlier in his career. Graham Taylor's long ball style at watford didnt make the best use of Barnesy's skills. Liverpool's pass and move style was much more suited to him. From 87 to 91 he was the best CLUB player in the world for me. That Achilles tendon injury he had in 1992 robbed him of all his pace and he was never the same player again. Shame as he was only 28 years old when he did his Achilles tendon injury.

  • @Barsenalona84 Agreed he adapted into a very different player, was still class though.

  • This guy is my cousin and he's the best liverpool ever had

  • This video is why we have Youtube.

  • ruud gullit said in 88 that barnes was the best player in the world

  • Whoever thinks giggs was better than barnes is on some highly potent substance and i want some lol :p

  • Got An AutoGraph From The Legend 2huDaii=D :D

  • what a moment, 1989 fa cup final wembley, barnes to rush for the winner, it just had to be following hillsborough weeks earlier. can remember it like yesterday was kicking the ball in my back yard as a kid all day trying to copy barnes and rush.

  • barnes beardsley mcmahon rush vs downing kuyt suarez carrol not as good as the old boys, but then again you just have to be better than the rest. barnesy is a one-off one of the greatest left sided players in english football. come on dalglish just bring us back one title a trip down memory lane. been waiting 21 years.

  • Man if we only had a winger this good now...

  • @regnpul we have one coming through at liverpool right now ........raheem sterling and he was born in jamaica as well

  • If Downing can be half of what Barnesy was, we'll be ok

  • between Barnes and the Keg (Gascoigne) I would put one of them as the best English players I've seen..one was not picked as often as he should have been for England..(racist coaches to blame) the other was undone by off the field antics

  • shame we can't have someone as good to play now for l'pool. great player

  • wheres his goal against QPR in 1987

  • 1:43 is where I cannae hold it in anymore and I spunk my pants. 4 :14 is where is happens again

  • 1:21 . . . offisdes? You be the linesman.

  • lets hope raheem sterling will get a good left foot and grow stronger and then we got a new john barnes :)

  • Awesome. What would his value be today?

  • WOW... simply world class !

  • quite simply the greatest English winger to have graced the top flight of English football....Theo eat your heart out mate. Giggs - you were great, you were no Barnsey in his prime - sorry.

The Liverpool team of 88 was simply on another level...credit to the teams who held that side to draws and few who managed to beat it, because in my eyes the LFC side of 88 was in its own right as good as the Barca lot today.

How i miss those days - when we were nigh on invincible and the envy of England.

  • @IneedUnderscores Giggs wisnae English mate.

  • King of Assists as I can see ..

  • Awesome video. What a legend Barnes was. One of the most unselfish footballers ever. Just never seemed to lose the ball ever.

  • Greatness.

  • One of the greatest English players ever.

  • Seriously, this is one of the better soccer compilations on YouTube, and I've watched plenty. Good quality footage considering the age, nice long clips, and the music isn't very intrusive. I also like the fact that you can still hear lots of the original commentary. From one Liverpool fan to another, great job. YNWA...

  • What a gifted player, talented beyond belief. Players like Barnes come along once in a lifetime.

  • its not just the pace and strength of barnes, its the cool composure and inteligent footballing mind,he knew where to put the ball, where people were, when to speed up and dribble, when to shoot, when to pass. Such a joy watching his brilliance! if we can get 1 quarter of a player barnes was then wele do well.

  • great video

  • JOHN BARNES THE GREATEST TENNIS PLAYER @ RAPPER EVER TO OF LIVED

    JOHN FUCKING BARNES YOU LEGEND

  • @plannedmurder you fucking idiot! tennis player???! he was macclesfields greatest goal keeper! FUCK SAKE YOU DICKHEAD! BUT, YES HIS RAPPING IS MY LULLABY!

  • @EVILDR5PUD what the fuck is wrong with you, you stupid twat.

John barnes was from ghana and he beat Fred perry in the 1985 wimbledon final.....

get your facts right before you test me kiddo.

  • My favourite player of all time! He was simply majestic for Liverpool. To stand head and shoulders as the best player in a team that had the talents of Peter Beardsley, Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan and Jan Molby shows what a great great player he was. For those too young to have seen or appreciate how good he was, John Barnes was to Liverpool what Lionel Messi is to Barcelona. He was a fantastic footballer!

  • Watford, Liverpool and England Legend!!!! Lovely bloke as well, Great accent!!!

  • Barnes was technically better than Giggs I thought, but Ryan Giggs is another legend. Giggs had more mentality, was a better team player and proved to be a stalwart right to this day. Digger on the other hand suffered a serious injury at 28 and thereafter played in a Pirlo position plus Beardsley was sold by Souness, replaced by Saunders. The Liverpool team of the late 80's had suddenly broken up and the likes of Jones, Harkness, McManaman came into the fore..

  • i hope we can sign someone like him in summer window.

  • He is the closet thing to a South American Type player that England ever had and probably will ever have. We need another John Barnes type player bought in for next season for us to completely be competing for titles next season under King Kenny YNWA

  • this guy wasw better than giggs

  • JCB loved his football. Back in 1981 he was playing for Sudbury Court in NWW London. QPR lost to Watford in signing him(QPR were gonna lay an astroturf that year) Watford then signed Digger for a few kits. This magician made his debut at home to Oldham in Sep 81. Search Watford v Norwich October 24, 1981. That's JCB

  • Giving Joe Cole the number 10 is sacrilege

  • the 2nd song is Pulstar by Vangelis btw

  • Owen wore the 10 shirt after Barnes not sure..love that goal home to Villa, he was miles ahead of everyone else

  • who use no 10 after John Barnes Retired??

  • @kaqio Owen took over the number 10 then the next one we had was 7 years alter with luis garcia.

  • Absolute beast of a player. One of the best in the world easily during his career

  • Agreed Barnes in his prime was unstopable. Giggs has nothing on JB.

  • the best left wing ever!!

  • My hero!

  • man joe cole doesnt deserve that shirt

  • love the first goal

  • Never got to see him play but this vid shows why he was rated highly and these kinda players are why I play on the wing.

At the end the old North Bank, never got to stand on that either sigh..missed all the terracing days looks so much better

  • king kenny is back! history will rewrite itself

  • Look at the bobble at 1:06. Most modern wingers would fall over the ball if that happened to them. Barnes at his peak walked (literally) the ball past players on pitches that you'd only see in rugby these days.

  • My greatest hero. Maradona second. Zisou third.

  • Fucking leg. Liverpool's, no, the greatest winger this league has ever had.

  • @janenigga John Barnes was a young player at Watford FC and then went on to win 79 England caps...If you read my last post you idiot, I NEVER said Barnes was from England.....I said I don`t think England will produce another left winger like him!..that is a very different point that I am making!...he won nearly 80 England caps and came through the youth system at Watford, therefore he was a product of English football!....it seems you are pretty confused to me!..

  • what's the SECOND song? :O

  • love his skill. great to watch. brings my memory back to 90s

  • Very good player.

  • LOOK AT 2.00 AGAINST THE NOTTM FOREST DEFENDERS HE MAKES THEM LOOK LIKE MUGS HAHAHA

  • to be honest im a united fan but john barnes is better than giggs..not by far though come one...stop being deluded...giggs is one of the best premier league midfielders of all time and they basically got the same goal scoring ratio

  • @positiveblackman1 apart from barnes scoring about 60 more goals in 20 odd games less ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @Beatdown2k8 yes but the tempo was way slower back then :P

  • what a great player he was. so complete.

  • barnes best liverpool player ever??

  • I have to say this guy was fucking amazing...I`m not a Liverpool fan but if Barnes was Brazilian, Italian or French he would have won World Player of the Year for sure...I don`t think England will produce another left winger like him...he was special, truly world-class!

  • @mairsy100 exactly. John barnes and stanly mathews are the two most complete wingers this country has EVER produced.

Id love to see another one at liverpool, but right now it seems a near impossible task. As many of us scousers say about our failed attempt in 08/09. we were just a john barnes away from that league title.

  • Watching this video makes me depressed. Why can't we play like that now?

  • IMO you have to talk about John Barnes in the same breath as the likes of Gascoigne & Hoddle....footballing geniuses who perhaps never quite hit the heights internationally that their talents certainly merited...

  • One of my frieds meet him in Liverpool once, top man, a true gentleman

  • Happy birthday digger!!!

  • Best player I have ever seen in my lifetime, loved him at the time

  • Legend!

  • Class-in-a-glass! Look at the precision passing, the pace and the skill! It actually proves how shite the English national team are/were as they simple couldn't produce any were near that type of form out of him! Brian Robson my hairy hoop!

  • I'm a manchester United fan(and yes i live a mile away from the ground) and i feel I have to say BARNSEY was an absolute LEG-END. Also agree that England are shite and could not get the best out of him as Liverpool did.

  • gerrard adopted that move at 1:41

  • the team of '88-'90.... the last great Liverpool team. when will we see your likes again? Yank$ out. JFT96 YNWA

  • @tomsnowball we will see it again man, keep the faith, king kenny is back !

  • Giggs can not pass like that cross like that could not score as many goals as that and could never adapt to defensive midfield they way barnes did. Barnes never gave the ball away and you listen to any player from before 96 and they will all tell you who the daddy was. What let him down for england not having the players around what he was used to at liverpool. quick passing game at liverpool against long ball england. come on its not rocket science.

  • @damonpartridge Neither is the English language. Learn to speak it.

  • @AlexYDC91 YOU MEAN TYPE IT !!

  • @damonpartridge HAHAHAH Giggs would rape Barnes all day long. Much better all round footballer and has won everything at club level!!! Having said that, Barnes was a great special player and ur right, a better goal scorer but in terms of being an EXCITING winger Giggs was FAR SUPERIOR and was able to adapt his game as he got older and kept winning medals!!!.......OH and United 19-18 Liverpool

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 .giggs cant tie barnes boots m8,winning trophies?giggs did not win them on his own did he?

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 Barnes could score far more than Giggs and assist far more than Giggs in his prime. Barnes could also go past three players without relying solely on pace like giggs and technically was on another Level. Further more Barnes actually did adapt his game, in a far more productive way than Giggs as well. As in he could play as the kind of midfielder Xabi Alonso is, or a Jack wilshere.

Giggs, whilst a united great and won more in a team was not a patch on our Digger.

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 exciting? herad of the term objective? maybe to you. so giggs is also better than baggio becuase he won more leagues? idiotic reasoning.

  • @kisamakara Looking at league titles IS an OBJECTIVE measure you dummy. Stop being jealous of United. We are a bigger club than you and more successful. Keep clinging on to the past!!! LOSERS!!!!!!

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 more successful my arse!! hw many european cups do ye av again u chode?

  • @TheScouser44 We still have more trophies than you and more league titles!!!! You keep living in the past! We are a bigger team in the here and now!!!!

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 we have more major trophies!

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 clearly titles measures all aspects of player/abilities/position/contribution to team noob? how can we be jealous of utd? we have more major trophies and reminder 18+5 you been chasing with jealousy (majority utd fans) for years. hater.

  • @kisamakara Keep living in the past!!! Jealous!!!

  • @FaisalLasiaf1 deluded, no explanation and reasoning just rhetoric. you are blindly biased to your team clan like manner. no counter response admission of jealousy and maybe hatred based on lack of understanding of surroundings. baggio won very few league titles so giggs must be better than him. do you understand the limits of statistics or justa blind noob?

  • I support Everton. Back in these days, Liverpool were getting back on top after Everton's dominant period in the mid 80s, so I "hated" Liverpool! Maybe I didn't see all that John Barnes did, but looking at this vid now, I'd forgetten how important a player he was for Liverpool. There are very few players like this now. Position, pace, passing and power is what it's mostly about today.

  • What's the first song mate?

  • @marxistsoldier We Are Alive by Paul Van Dyk

  • Cheers.

  • Absolutely class wass Barnes.

  • I'm not a Liverpool fan but i miss those days! Football is shit now.

  • that last goal was right at the death. you were lucky to beat portsmouth. very very lucky

  • @weatherallc05 Dont matter mate it is history now we went on to beat pompey on pens and then win the final.

  • rush..goal!! yeah but barnes did all the work...

  • Kenny signed Barnes ,Beardsley , Houghton, around the same time if i remember correctly ,All 3 could make things happen and were very comfortable on the ball ,add Rushie or Aldo , Liverpool have never been as potent upfront since.

I think people tend to forget how amazing he was , I think 2 times player of the Yr .

Just as John was slowing down ,A Young Ryan Giggs was making the headlines , It was Giggs vs Barnes with your mates , For Me John was a better player , but thats another story !

  • A magnificent attacker.

  • 1:13 Great goal

  • Greame Souness was a virus to Liverpool management

dont get me wrong, great player but poor manager, he destroyed the liverpool which dominated england,

this is what liverpool are missing, we lost barnes and never replaced him, we lost kewell and never replaced him....can joe cole bring back the memories!

    YNWA

  • @besofian i dont think we will ever play football of that quality again like wat we did in the late eighties , barnes , beardsley , aldridge , rush , whelan , molby , they were just unbelievable!!!!!!

  • Joe Cole's legs have gone. He will never be a top player after that cruciate ligament injury, he is so slow these days it's sad.

  • @besofian souness did nothing right as manager. and roy evans was just as bad

  • Ever noticed how players were so much better at chipping the ball back in the day? :P.

Barnes was truely a genius on the wing and his style and skill is very much like Ryan Giggs used to be. If Giggs had been English and eligible to play for England nationally then we would have had a Barnes figure all the way up to the mid 2000's.

Either way... Barnes.... Playing along side Peter Beardsley, I don't think I've seen many more deadly combinations :).

  • digger was a 100 times better than that little faggot ronaldo

  • Just wish Stevie Torres and Barnes could have played in the same team, what an attack

  • @Leondias656 Ummm remember Rush and Daglish? They've done much better for Liverpool then Stevie and Torres.

  • @blop129, Actually Stevie & Torres did, considering what teams they had playing behind them, now we are not a two man team but we are lacking quality in certain areas. Although Torres & rush would have been an awesome partnership with Stevie, Kenny & Barnes as supporting strikers would be a hell of an attack. A little unbalanced though.

  • @Leondias656 No they haven't! Torres and Stevie together have achieved NO silverware. Rush and Daglish won the league 6 times and the european cup 3 times! Yes we had a better team then but Daglish was better then Gerrard and for the time being Rush was better then Torres. There partnership was better and they achieved so much more then Stevie and Torres will ever achieve.

  • @blop129 Yeah they have achieved more silverware, at the time we had a better team & the period was different, we expected to win trophies & we did, we have won trophies of Gerrard's back & I have a feeling if Torres stays we will win some from his goals. You cannot say yet that they will not achieve anything. Just because King Kenny is one of the best we ever had it does not mean that others will not achieve anything.

  • @Leondias656 I didn't say tehy wouldn't achieve anything, just not as much as Kenny or Rush. But Daglish isn't one of the best we've ever had, he IS the best.

  • @blop129 best so far, legends are never unbeatable. That sort of thinking makes us undervalue our current legends.

  • thanks for this comp mate ...Barnes was my fav all time player hands down...is someone seriously trying to compare giggs to barnes???pfft

  • Dont forget how he came on late aginst Argentina and cut through their defences almost saved the day for Englland. Lineker met one cross and missed the other by a hair's breath. Bobby Robson shamefully kept both Viv Anderson and Barnes on the bench. Barnes refused to speak to reporters afterwards. This after they had played every qualifier and got England to the world-cup. Disgraceful

  • Different class from todays English football players. John Barnes truly puts the likes of Lampard and the other spice boys to shame. Its actually quite startling to see the difference in ability. It just show how low English football has gotten. Performance levels usually improve among athletes from one generation to the next. With English footballers the reverse is true.

  • I had forgotten how good he was

and that he ran fast with the ball than without it.

  • outstanding player, world class to everyone who knew him as anything other than an england player.

    Nice bloke too.

  • My favourite Liverpool player ever.

  • He gifted Ian Rush and Ray houghton so many goals with his excellent passes.

  • are you kidding me? im sorry he was the best, coming drom a brazilian

  • I never knew John Barnes was such a great player!

  • great player.probably the best team in history of engish league

  • First time i have seen him play. He does not play like an english man- so elegant and skillful!

  • @QuixoticM I'm afraid that's what held him back for England, a lot of the players around him just struggled under possession of the ball!

  • John Barnes make modern day wingers a complete joke. And I think he's quite underrated.

  • Can anyone confirm the goal at 1.17? is that against Wimbledon in the Charity Shield? Dont remember the game at all.

  • @stevelfc1

It was the Charity (now Community) Shield v Wimbledon, August 1988.

    'Pool won 2-1 mate.

  • legend!

  • wow...how come this guy is never mentioned when talking about great players...`? he plays like a modern player but with more elegance and vision...

  • I have NEVER seen a winger this skillful, every cross is right on target. He is a complete player. All I see today is a bunch of wingers that cannot score goals and crossing aimlessly mostly to no one. Johnny Barnes is the BEST! Check out England vs. Argentina when Barns came on the field with 12 min left, Barns had 2 touches one resulted in a goal and the other barely passes Gary Linekers head on the back post. Barns had Argentina scrambling in total chaos.

  • john barnes is and always will be my favorite English player---nobody came clos to his skill even the Brazilians will tell you that

  • John Barnes - sheer quality!

  • great montague. I knew he was good but not that good.

Rarely do you see such great skill and trickery lead goals. All too often the show boating leads to nothing. but ere there must be 20 or 30 or examples of barnes scoring and creating through great artistry.

In the early ninties i was too young to appriceate the skill but watching that, now i know why he was the name i wanted on the back of my shirt.

  • John Barnes in his prime was awesome

Ronaldo & Beckham would not get close to him

  • if only we had him now.

my god he was great, shame we werent in europe...... be 15 now not 5!!!!!!!

    YNWA

  • too bad he played in the kop

  • Greatest Liverpool Player Ever!

  • On a par with Dalglish as Liverpool's greatest ever player in my mind. The racist bile he and other British born black players had to contend with {even from our own so-called supporters] was a national disgrace and disgraced the name of Merseyside as a whole. People may say it was a minority, well I can tell you it was a sizeable majorty throwing banana skins and doing the monkey chants. Not once did Liverpool FC stand up to protect one of their greatest ever players. Shame on them.

  • what a legend i wish we had any winger even half as good as him now

  • Footage was good. Music was a sign of the times. terrible.

  • Barnesy is an Anfield legend. Wish we had someone of his quality today

  • actually macca as well, barnes and macca what a combo
