@zfunk I think that because he went for the "deranged madman" take on the illusion, that by that point they were stunned silent. Usually tricks like this only get applause if the magician can somehow redeem the audience's trust in his sanity afterwards, like by smirking at the audience just before revealing that he was just winding them up the whole time. Because he played this one serious towards the end, the "madman" effect lingers on.
