I've been trying this out again and can get it to work just fine but I can't get the glow to work in a reflection of the machine that has the glow. Do I need to use a special kind of material on the reflective object?

Just don't use a sphere, create a shape that matches the rear of the Falcon. The shape should the rear of the ship's engine.
