hay! im thinking of getting a orange th30 h and run a EQ pedal on the fx loop! Im looking for a nice Anthrax tone! do you think i will be able to get the tone im looking for???
I own both, and they both have good qualities. In my rig the MXR KRK 10, (it has two outputs) in the effects loop adds less noise. It's transparent, EQ's are supposed to be. But the Boss GE-7 works really well as a pre EQ. I use it after my Pigtronix compressor. I use it to beef up my strats without changing its tone,
to my ears, the boss sounded terrible during the clean comparison. it somehow removed something from the sound, whereas the mxr sounded basically the same. they sounded pretty similar with distortion though, maybe the boss with a slight advantage with that lo-fi-ness.
i have question.. i have boss md-2 it is cool but when i turn up the wolume it sounds awful and the sound is not bright, so will eq make it sound bright
They both are good.... But the boss seems to impact the sound (in a positive way) a lot more. But the MXR gets the bonus for looking a lot cooler. For me 7 band is better because once I get past 7 I don't know what to do with all the sliders. Less is better
@MrCecilbag It's certainly not the most flexible amp, but it does everything I need it to. The sound is absolutely fantastic. It doesn't play all that nice with my G-System, though... oh well.
I moved from Boss to the MXR. This is a simple (on purpose) comparison. The problem with that is, OF course they are very similar in simple ways. The thing you cant compare is the MXR will do anything the boss will do but of course, the boss cant do all the MXR will do. The MXR lets me fine tune tone to weed out mud on the bottom or a bad high. Both from the the control of mids the BOSS does not control. Thanks for the Vid man. Two high quality ped's. I love both.
@johnrussom I was never able to get quite the same tonality out of the MXR that I could out of the Boss, so for me, the Boss is better, but I also never intended on using it as anything more than a solo boost.
@stompboxblog The boss adds colors the sounds, it muffles it a bit also. I went from Boss to MXR myself, the thing that kills the boss for me is that it creates a lot of hiss.
I personally like the Boss a lot better. Seems to me that the Boss is a lot beefier because it is a 7 band. I've always seem to get better sounds out of stuff in which you have less to work with. If that makes any sense, haha, but for the most part they both sounded quite similar. I like them both, but the Boss slightly more.
first i wanna thank you for this comparison, i have a MXR 10 band eq. and i knew it sounded a little different and to me it takes away some tone, so ima go with the Boss Eq. thank you once again for making this, ima make some pickup comparisons soon, check'em out ill subscribe to you if you subscribe to me :)
@angelsg1000: The thing is, the MXR seems much cleaner to me - better at preserving my tone, that is - but I just like the Boss better. I think the sort of lo-fi sound just appeals to me.

I think EQ pedals are worthless. I'd rather spend more on the amp with good EQ controls built in.

@fvgotch EQ pedals can give you a completely different tone at the push of a button and are way more precise than any amp controls i have ever seen

@CTBmarc Well... I guess they do provide immediate change of sound from the amp eq by stomping on it... so ok, I agree they have their purpose.

I don't understand one thing. If you care about an EQ colouring your tone, why the hell use an EQ?! Just turn it off. Or, don't buy an EQ!
If you use EQ to colour your tone - use it. Then when you don't want it to affect your tone - press the switch!

plus the mxr has leds (great for gigging) alone might be worth it, and it has a gain control to clean up distortion if necssary.
