The goose-step (`Stechschritt´ means `poking-step´) is exactly that relict from the medieval fencing-culture, which provides the best way to kick someone whilst stepping forward - if it doesnt hit it saves the space in front of you.

It is a show of discipline. Goosestepping is one of the hardest things to do (marchingwise at least :-) )
