  • I remember going to see this with my mom and a bunch of {then I thought} OLD PEOPLE! We had such cheap seats and had to walk up so far I remember saying very loud "If we walk up any higher our arms wont be to short to box with God" Everyone on the stairs fell out laughing!!!!!

  • Funny...I was in the car & this just popped in my head. I said aloud "Your arms are too short to box with God." My boyfriend asked me why I was quoting Nas. I said "I have no idea what you're talking about. This is a play from the 70's. " He said that Nas had said it in a song. Anyway I told him how my dad had this album when I was little and how it used to scare me when they sang "Come on Down." My father used to play this to get me to stay in my room when I was on his nerves. Thnx for posting

  • @DeiidraYvonne: Thanks for your comment! The last part of it made me laugh. I'm glad that I could bring back memories and now that you mention it, "Come On Down" is kinda scary. Lol! It also reminds me of one part in THE WIZ, when the crows are pickin with the Scare-Crow.

  • all i have is the cassette to this and i love it!! i wish they would bring it back just so people like me in the new generation can see it.

  • Nas brought me here.

  • I saw this play in the 80's it would forever change my life. It stared me on journey as an actor/singer/comedian. At the time I was a drummer at my church the next I wrote and performed in the church Easter play. This takes me back. Please post more

  • @AmbassadorsofHope: Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad that I was able to help bring back memories for you. I have already posted several songs from this album and I do hope you will enjoy them all the same. Take care and Many Blessings to you and yours!

  • were doing this play at my school this year. im playing mary. the funny thing is that mary was portayed as big mama and im 4'9" lol. but it is amazing. i just pray i can do the role justice

  • Does Jennifer Holliday has a solo or lead on this album?

  • @flournoysand. What city, in 1978, did you see Jennifer Holiday in the show?

  • Saw this on Broadway 4 times.....3 times with Delores Hall and once with Jennifer Holiday before Dream Girls!

  • Man!!! We saw this play in Los Angeles back in the 70's. I remember they were actually shouting and dancing on the floor! We were in the balcony It distracted the play and delayed it for a minute, but it was excellent. Couldn't see it with Patti I believe she had surgery at that time (something to do with her throat). Excellent play. Had the LP, but made the mistake and let someone "borrow" it. Haven't seent it since. (Heavy sigh!!!)

  • @hyacinthb: I feel what you're saying. I've heard SOOO many stories about how some friends let folks borrow their albums/CDs and never received them back. I've also had times where I lent a CD to a guy I went to school with, and he ended up letting someone borrow it from him. Between the 2 people, my CD was damaged and they both played dumb! I don't lend anything out anymore. Lol!

  • Rowoches , There was another song on this album titled"There's a Stranger in Town". I would love it if you could post that. my memory of this song refuses to let it die. It was a fantastic play.

  • I just found this album on Ebay! Needless to say I scooped it up! They need to put it CD! Anyone know what the deal is? Is there some type of legal dispute?

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! This song was in my very first dance recital in 1985. I've looked all over for this song and score

  • I can remember so clearly going to see this. That was my first play thanks

  • Thank you so much!!!!

  • omg I LOVE this musical! i can't believe someone put it (atleast the album) on youtube. THANK YOU! now u get points for that!

  • thankyouthankyouthankyou.....thankyou

  • @2007foc: No problem, no problem, noooo problem! Lol

  • I need to find this on DVD. Unfortunately Vinette Carroll passed befre I could ask her if it was available. She truly had a head for the stage,

  • I was in my mothers tummy, when my father was playing trumpet for this show on Broadway. I have always loved the music from this show, and am proud that my father was a part of this show.

  • One of the greatest voices ever! She can really blow!!!!!

  • Wow...I saw this at the Lyceum theatre when I was 10 with my family Dec. 30 1976. LOL I remember I was mad because I was mad because I wanted to chill with my boys. But the opening "The Beatitudes" had me hooked. It made me take those piano lessons more serious. An experience I'll never forget!

  • Please, I know you get a whole lot of requests, but if you could--Delores sings a track on this album, "Jesus I Love You," could you post. When I came back from Nam mine was mysteriously lost! Thanks!

  • THANKS FOR POSTING!

  • Great Post! I saw the play when it came to Los Angeles. It was a fantastic production. (Late) Min. Michael Gray was part of the play in the opening segment. I believe he was also the singing voice of Fat Albert. We had a great time. Thanks for the post. I had the album and the playbill. Put the playbill in the album cover and lost the album - isn't that cute? This is a collector's item.

  • Have you all heard of William Keebler Hardy? He was also apart of the Your Arm's too Short to box with God cast. His name is on the album and I believe he sang with the Alex Bradford singers for a while. William Hardy affectionately known as Uncle Bill was my great-uncle (through marriage). He was a very talented man who was apart of the cast and later created the gospel play God's Creation in the 80's. RIP Uncle Bill!!

  • I remember him from the cast album. He had a really wide range that went into the soprano range, right? I also vaguely recall a New York Times Sunday article that mentioned him when the show first opened.

  • Yes you're talking about the right man. Uncle Bill had an AMAZING range. As a matter of fact, his nephew, my granny's second husband often imitated his piercing high notes. But Uncle Bill always beat him in my opinion lol. I wish I was born when the show was around. I'm 25 and the show was off by the time I came along. I just heard alot about it and saw play bills, handsome pictures of a younger Uncle Bill, but my granny moved and doesn't have the memorbilla anymore. : (

  • Wow! I didn't see the original but I did see the tour and the 1st Broadway revival with a teenaged Jennifer Holiday (before Dreamgirls) in the Delores Hall role. I also saw the second Broadway revival that featured Patti Labelle in the same role with Al Green co-starring.

I think that your uncle may have been in the cast with Jennifer too but I'm not sure. I remember hearing that he was a very nice man.

  • You really know your stuff LOL, Seriously! I was told that he was in the original, and he was in the revival with Jennifer Holiday also. I think the revival was going on during the 80's. He went on to create another play called God's Creation in the 80's as well. He was in the process of reviving it in the mid 90's, but died in 95 or 96 before the revival happened. I think Shirley Caser was in his play. I kinda which I had some of his stuff now. I would create a myspace pg in his honor.

  • May God bless the soul of your late Uncle! He was an absolutely talented singer. I remember as a young teenager taking my date to see this play (my first gospel musical) and here I was trying to be cool especially in front of this girl and your uncle belted out "Didn't I tell you, He'd be alright!" It sent chills down my spine. And then when he sang "When the Power comes" there was a girl in the audience who couldn't contain herself, she began to shout while I began to cry because the Holy Ghost

  • was in that theater. Your uncle had the anointing when he sang! I ended up seeing it two times. I am now 48 years old, I was 17 then and I haven't forgotten that experience. I knew that he made an album under Savoy Records but I could never find it. Anyway, I'm just so glad I was able to express my joy to someone who knew this man. He was an incredible singer(I'm sure he's singing in the choir adoring the Lord right now).

  • Wow! I'm glad that you had an opportunity to see him doing what he loved to do. I wish I could find some of the cast that he had for his other play called God's Creation. You are right he was a great singer. His nephew often mimicked his singing style, but we all agreed that Uncle Bill had him beat..lol. Thank you for the support and love.

  • Brilliant Delores Hall performance. I love her. Where is she now?

  • I heard she has been back home in L.A. Not sure if she has relocated back from the east coast all together.

  • Delores is still in L.A. but after doing some film ("Scrooged" and "Lethal Weapon 3") and TV ("Diagnosis Murder") she says that she's ready to get back onstage in a musical. I'm praying it happens because her performances on Broadway have never been matched!

  • Seeing the play live made all of the difference. Alex Bradford had a hand in writing some of the songs. In New York when I first saw it. Prof.Bradford and Vinette Carroll were 2 of the hecklers that mocked Jesus as he hung on the cross.

  • When I was about 16 years old I seen this play in New York it was an awesome play. You are to much my brother, your page is awesome.

  • MAN YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this Rowoches. I have this cast album. Saw the play twice. Once on Broadway and in Philadelphia with Patti Labelle.

  • You're welcomed. I just had to to load some things from the album. I didn't like it at first, but it has really grown on me.

  • @dmmrad54 How was it and how was Patti?

  • @thekaliko Patti was the bomb. I saw it twice in Phillie. The play was extended for about 3 more weeks. I took my mother to see it the second time.

  • @dmmrad54 thank you sooo much for responding - that is one event I dearly wish I had the pleasure of seeing.
