@njdevil281 This "mediocre plane" out performs anything today as an interceptor, strategic bomber, and recon plane, and we could have had it fifty years ago. And we were planning on using it as a platform to launch vehicles into space. Not bad for a country that "only" makes canoes, eh?
@njdevil281 Americans tried twice and failed? We try it once and we fucking did it! You know why? Cause we are EDUCATED - we proved it was possible and if it wasn't for us Avro space would still be behind tech, now go bomb a country that hasn't done anything to anyone for over 300 years
@RazorCell7 Oh really you are educated? Last time I check there wasn't a single Canadian University in the top 10 list of world universities. the US had 7. The Avro was a failure accept it.
@njdevil281 Yeah.. that's why the US has one of the lowest performing student population pre-university world wide - congratulations you have more immigrants going to your univeristy then the domestic population, Avro obviously was a success you idiot (proving once again Americans are ignorant) it WORKED. Keep denying your country failed at Avro so you discouraged it. Now why don't you go off and pretend you guys won the war of 1812 LOL
@RazorCell7 The war of 1812 was a stalemate between the US and Britain. Your suggestion that more immigrants than Americans go to the top US universities is pure nonsense.
How did the arrow work lol. Because it flew? I would hope it fucking flew after all that work. The Avro was a flop stop being such a little bitch about it.
@njdevil281 Again you are proving your ignorance, Canada wasn't a country but there people and colonists in North America were called CANADIANS. It was our PEOPLE that defeated you in 1812, and repressed an entire invasion to take on a counter offensive. It was also Canadian made militia that did the work while most the British divisions were too busy fighting napoleon. With your logic I can say the Americans never one the revolutionary war, seeing how they didn't exist back then..
@njdevil281One Line of foot from the British (Canadian regiment) of the Regular Army didn't fight the whole war for everyone. If you didn't know Britain was fighting a far more devastating enemy called NAPOLEON on there different fronts. You proved your ignorance overall and the level of stupidity. It was Canadian colonial MILITA that fought back the "best" invading foreign force & occupation of the United Mistakes. It was MILITA that burned and sacked washington. It was MILITA that won the war.
The avro arrow was the very first super sonic jet in the world. At that time, any other jet struggled just to amaintain a speed of just under mach one. As soon as they hit the threshhold, they would lose control, the Arrow was the first plane to pass the sound barrier in level flight.
@RTPye117 Are you serious? There were numerous types of supersonic production aircraft already in service. F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-106. The Arrow did not pioneer controlled, level supersonic flight, or even bisonic flight.
If you want some good Documentaries on the avro arrow go here,

The docs' have never before seen Avro footage, from the CF 100 to the Avro Car, they got documentaries on it. Very professionally made, the dvd's look like something you would buy at HMV

Feb 20th, 1959, the Arrow was canceled. I hope some of these guys building a replica of it build a working one, because it would be fun to see if fly by on Canada Day in Ottawa.
@canadianlattitude: How about the Liberal Party of Canada for wrongfully interning thousands of loyal Japanese Canadians during WW2? Have you forgiven them for that little oversight? Get over it...it's been over 50 years.
The reality is that the CF-105 program would've died under a Liberal government as well. C.D. Howe (former Liberal minister that bankrolled Avro) admitted that it was hopelessly overbudget, fraught with problems, and needed to go away.
Sweiland, Canada doesn't train the US military. I provided a few sources in my comments to him, so please feel free to use them against future overly-patriotic, imbeciles from the north.
@sweiland75 Well, our special forces out rank America.
My brothers friend is in JTF2 and he went up against the Green Berets and the Navy SEALS, and they won both times, Green Berets : Killed all 18 in 11 minutes.
Navy SEALS : Killed 11 captured 6 in 18 minutes.
So, obviously we have a better special forces.
Also, America has asked out Military to train them MULTIPUL times.
So, if that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.
Other than your brother's biased opinion, provide a source that says your special ops are "better" than US special forces. Furthermore, JTF2 has only been around since the early 1990's and if you think the US asked Canada, a nation who thinks it's ever so "peace loving", then think again or provide a source and prove it.
While you're at it, google the article "private firm trains Canadian troops". Find out who REALLY trains who.
@JohnQRandom You cannot proove what has happened in mock combat, it was a classified scurmish, and actually, America, has asked Canada for training help in their navy, and seriously, a lot of those articles are bias out there, I will never trust an article that is bias, because I know that it is incorrect.
The article I refered you to is a "Canadian article", found on the website "Canada.com". Secondly, the US doesn't "ask" Canada for help, our militaries work in conjunction with each other on a daily basis, even did so even during the Iraqi war which your propaganda machine so wrongly claims Canada had no part of. Third, being that mock training also happens daily between our militaries, Canadians fail on a regular basis against Americans as well as against each other, and vise versa.
Fourth. Your navy does not train the US. Your navy is basically under American command, and has been during the entire Iraqi occupation (google the article: "Canada's secret contribution to the ar in Iraq"). Furthermore, much of Canada's military equipment is in fact American made, including nearly your entire airforce. The only thing "biased" is your shitty "opinion" concerning your military over ours, which I can guarantee you is sure to make all Americans laugh.
I never said our military is better than yours, I guessI had read some false information.
Although with the F-35 II coming out, that is a world wide project, but mostly American, and yes, I know that without you guys, our asses would get handed to by the major superpowers, but then again, we have mostly everyone on our side.
But yes, I know that our main rifles, the C7, C8, and C9 are all American made.
Everyone who is on your side, is on our side, and everyone who we're against, you're against. It sounds like you don't understand how Canada and the US work. The main difference would be that Canadians have the unique advantage of disguising their military intervention around the world with ours. The same could be said with ignorance, being fat, isolated etc. Everyone (including Canadians) is far too busy criticizing the US for these things to take notice of your actions and short-comings.
Actually, you may not realise this, but you guys always critisize us, see only our comedians make fun of you, we barely ever make fun of you now, because you actualy have a leader that isn't an "inbred".
I'd have to say since I began living abroad nine years ago, the only ones who have ever given me a hard time are 30% (or so) of the Canadians I've met. Other Americans, Aussies, Brits and even Koeans (I'm living in Korea now) have told me they have also noticed Canadians and their anti-American attitude. Americans do not have the inferiority complex you do, there fore we have no reason to be as competitive with you as you are with us, but I do relaize the US is FAR from perfect.
I was told that if I went down to the states for a college or university education, my mark would increase by %10, so, I highly doubt that we are inferior.
Also, do you realise that more than half of our modern population are immagrants, so, therefore you would have to base your opinion on their country of oragin.
And also, I do know that I am not an intelectual, for I am only in Grade 10, so, don't judge Canada's education programs on the opnion of a 15 year old.
I never said you were "inferior", in fact I don't think either side is better than the other as we are all North Americans.
"I was told if I went to the US for college my marks would increase 10%"
Being told something is more or less "hearsay". Your comments have been nothing but a series of "we are better than you" themed rants, and what fosters this is the propaganda you're fed. Canada is not "better" than the US (and vise versa), despite popular belief among many Canadians.
@JohnQRandom Oh that's right.. I forgot you guys have been vacationing in Cuba all this time and are part of the British Commonwealth now.
We have many common interests, but we are not the same on the International scene. (Don't get me wrong I'm not partaking in the USvCAN rhetoric, just clarifying your over-generalization)
I've been living abroad now for over 9 years and we are nearly exactly the same my friend. (The Canadians and Americans I know here in Korea are the same). Ironically, I have also met Americans who have been to Cuba. It's not that we cannot go there, it's that we must go via 3rd nation.
I know you would like an identity of your own, which is why this propaganda film was made. It's the same reason behind your beer ads and Rick Mercer as well. I'm sorry, but I don't buy it.
If sewing your flag to your backpack and constantly reminding people which celebrties are Canadian is what you consider an identity, then yes, you have one. Please spare me your next comment, which will naturally claim that Americans sew the Canadian flag to theirs as well. It simply isn't true my friend, for I have never in an entire decade met even one American who does.
The Canadians I get along with best are those who love living outside of Canada an who put their flags away.
That isn't what I was going to say at all. Not even close. But that's okay. I really don't expect you, a self-appointed expert on all things Canadian, to understand what the Canadian identity encapsulates. It's unfortunate, really.
According to you (I've read your other comments), we're just the same as Americans. Completely false. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but to claim we're the same is total bunk.
If you think Canadians are so different than Americans then you obviously haven't traveled. There is much more of a difference between blacks and whites in the America than there is between white Canadians and Americans for example. Latino Americans are equally different from both white Canadians and Americans as well. However, when comparing the majority population from both nations (whites), we are for the most part the same. (Which is why many of you sport your flag.)
I haven't the foggiest why you keep going on about flags. I never said anything about them.
You're telling me someone from New York City is the same as someone from northern Ontario (like me)? Culture goes beyond food, religion, clothing, music, and movies. It delves into mannerisms, political beliefs, and the integration of other cultures. Canadian culture is a mix of English, French, and First Nations. And our political ideology is different - not better, necessarily - but different.
You think Canadian mannerisms are different?? Canadians (like Americans) are big, poorly dressed (sneakers, athletic attire, etc.) and are extremely isolated. Nearly 3/4 of you DO NOT speak French. The Americans I've met in the five nations I've lived in the past 10 years integrated fine, and were more than willing to do so. You're a democratic society and hold free elections, just like ours. There are of course differences between some of our people, but over all, we share the same culture.
In Ontario alone, every kid has to have French education from Grades 1 to 9 and can take French beyond that, but 1 to 9 is mandatory. Ontario is almost half of Canada's population and add Quebec and New Brunswick. Northern Ontario is hugely French, especially northeastern Ontario. The Metis on the prairies also speak French, and there are many francophone communities there too.
It doesn't mean everyone in Ontario is fully bilingual, but those were born and raised in Ontario have some French.
Well, I not only was told the French speaking stat from a Canadian, but I also googled it. Sweden, The Netherlands, Denmark etc. on the other hand are bilingual nations, where as Canada has a population where some do speak French, most (or almost most) of whom are from Quebec.
Also, I am not in any way anti-Canadian. It's ridiculous, and I believe if I was, that would mean I am anti-American, which I'm not (even though I can be critical of both nations).
Hahahaha. About that. Realize that an overwhelming majority of YouTubers are pre-pubescent and love to spout bullshit. A significant portion of Canada IS bilingual and if not fully fluent, they same some sort of working knowledge of French. I'm not sure where that fellow got the 75% figure from. Most likely his ass. But do keep in mind these kids love to spout bullshit. Don't take them seriously.
The Canadian(s) who informed me about the percentage of Canadians who speak french were not youtubers, they were people I have met in person. Simply google "percentage of Canadians who speak French". Remember, to be bilingual means to be able to speak, read, and understand two languages. Knowing some phrases and a hanful of vocabulary does not define being bilingual. If that were the case, then many white Americans are also bilingual due to some rudimentary Spanish skills.
Of course. I wasn't saying those people who have a working knowledge of French are completely bilingual. My point was more that while the percent may not be that high for people who are completely fluent in English and French, most Canadians have a working knowledge of French, however rusty that knowledge may be.
I'm surprised they'd say something like that, though. Ah well. Retardation is not just endemic to the GOP. Unfortunately, it penetrates above the 49th as well.
Nah. I don't think *not* being bilingual is retardation per-se, but it's definitely a disadvantage, especially if you're American, who are the only people world wide who are considered ignorant for not being so. My best friend when I lived in Prague was from Quebec. She was the daughter of an Italian father and a Canadian mother. She said when she traveled outside of Quebec, she had trouble finding people who could understand her French, although the road signs were helpful.
Hahaha. You misunderstood me. I wasn't saying not being bilingual is retardation, but I was referring to all these urban myths and legends and BS statistics being thrown around as if they are fact by people who should know better (like whoever told you that 75% of Canada is bilingual).
Actually, I said 75% of Canadians are *not* bilingual. You've said nothing of you or your family speaking French. Could all of you sit down and hold a discussion about politics? Your favorite part of history? Art? Music? If so, then I admire all of you. If not, I hold nothing against you, but you would make up part of the 75%.
My apologies then. I misread. That's what I get for commenting at 4-5am local. My French is pretty rusty. I understand a lot more than I speak, but I could probably hold a conversation. In a couple years, I'm applying to the Canadian Forces as an officer. All CF officers are fluent in English and French. So in a couple years I'll be able to speak fluently. My parents are immigrants. My mother had no French exposure. My father spoke it fluently as he went to a university in France (among others).
Well if you can understand it then you definitely have the hrd part out of the way. I've worked in Russia twice, and at my high point had a 900 word vocabulary, and I could say virtually anything I needed to. As soon as a person would start speaking though, I usually caught bits and pieces of what they were sayig to conclude what they were getting at. The same for Spanish, which I studied before going to Ecuador 3 years ago. I've since forgotten most of both languages unfortunately.
That's the same with me and Portuguese. Both my parents are from Portugal. My dad, when he was alive, studied linguistics and spoke Portuguese (his native language), French, English, Italian, Spanish, and a bit of German all fluently, without accents. If you came up to him and had a conversation with him, you'd have no idea he was an immigrant. So I grew up exposed to all those languages. I understand keywords and piece together what someone is trying to say in all of those but German.
I'm an English teacher, and I obtained a TEFL certificate in Prague back in 2004. With this certificate, I'm able to qualify for a vast range of job oportunities, including the public school system in Korea which is where I am now. Prior to my TEFL gig, I worked for Peace Corps in Russia (the first time I was there).
I've just been accepted to the University of New England Australia, and I'm going to do an online masters throught them so I can start applying for university jobs.
Also, political ideology is more than "Democratic? Yes or no." Yes, we both have democracies, but I'm talking about different beliefs and core values. I tried to send you a message of 13 detailed points that outline this, but I can only send you a message if I'm on your friend list.
In any case, YouTube is full of kids. If you see them spout BS, that's not really reflective of Canadians. When I see Americans call Canadian war dead "fags", I know not to base my opinion of Americans on that.
And I just want to clarify that just because I'm pointing out there ARE fundamental differences between Canadians and Americans, I'm not anti-American. My girlfriend is American so it'd be rather odd if I was.
There are differences, but the similarities are way more important. The differences, however, show that we are a distinct and proud people. If you take offense at some Canadians being proud they share a heritage with some celebrities, that's your insecurity. Eh, we're proud. Live with it
You have no idea what you're talking about. I swear you Canadians are by far the most naive on the planet. Search for the video called "Canadians: The Avro Arrow was a FAILURE". It's a brief insight to the truth, and solid proof of your stupidity.
@sweiland75 YES IT WOULD. But then the Soviet Union eventually came out with the MiG-25 Foxbat so if this program had been done in the 1970s maybe the Avro Arrow would've had a chance to be Canada's own supersonic fighter.
The Avro was not a "fighter", it was an interceptor, and no other nation was interested in it because they had their own programs up and running while Canada's was time consuming and the plane itself hadn't been proven yet. it was incomplete, and the fantasy that Cansdians carry with them saying a "jealous US government canceled it" is utter bullshit.
@sweiland75 Although the American did play a part in it most over why it was scraped was because of a change in Ottawa. Very similar to what happened when the contract for the SeaHawks was canceled when Brian lost to Jean
@sweiland75 It was obvious you were refering to me.. but all you were using a leverage was that you are more patriotic because i have an american tv icons name.. my last name is Walker and ive been called walker texas ranger most of my life.. so i thought i was freely allowed to choose any name for my youtube account in a democratic society like Canada.. but nice try.. I expected more from you.. very weak
@sweiland75 thats completely disrespectful.. The military is some of the best trained in the world. although it is not up to size per capita as most other first world nations. it does its part.. have you?
@spuzmanX "Greedy Americans" were in support of the Arrow program. You seem to be another one with an emotional need to blame the US for the failure of the Arrow program, but such a position is not supported by historical evidence.
You from all your comments on the subject seem to need to express your opinion on everyone elses opinion. my advice is to talk the cock out of your mouth.
@spuzmanX I have been calling what I believe to be irrational opinions, and have provided verifiable counterarguments. Can you refute the points I have brought up? I have contended that the Americans offered assistance in the Arrow program, which makes it hard to believe they also worked to kill it. Can you offer up a quality source that states otherwise?
this is my personal opinion but I am pretty sure when the Arrow did the high speed pass over the Niagara Air force Base our useless neighbors to our south didn't like the fact the we had something bigger, faster, and stronger then they did and wouldn't be surprised if they told our government that we couldn't have it. becuase they didn't want another country having something better then they did.
@PDMcG1091 Those useless neighbors to the south provided technical and research assistance, lent a B-47 for testing of the Iroquois engine and even offered to subsidize the Arrow program toward the end.
Your opinion appears to be based largely on what you saw in a heavily fictionalized movie. As great as the Arrow was (or could potentially have been), it wasn't the only aircraft being developed at the time.
@PDMcG1091 But again, the US lent a hand in the Arrow's development...why would they have done so if they were worried about its potential? Why would the Arrow have been so alarming to the US, given that they already had a similarly-capable interceptor in the F-106 (and more advanced ones on the drawing board)? From the US's point of view, having another aircraft like the CF-105 guarding the north pole would have been all the better.
@LeopoldPlumtree Perhaps they made a mistake of giving us the few supplies of putting the prototypes in production and probably didn't think it would be that great of an achievement at the time. People DO make mistakes you know.
@PDMcG1091 Your speculation doesn't match up with the known facts. The US were very much kept in the loop with respect to the developments in the Arrow program. The USAF followed the program closely and the NACA were consulted on technical matters at numerous times. The truth of the matter is that there's no evidence the US had anything to do with Arrow's cancellation or that they were worried of its potential. Fictionalized movies are not good sources of information.
@LeopoldPlumtree I didn't say I was speculating. It's simply an opinion. MY opinion. There aren't alot of known facts to go along with. I have my own and opinion and you probably have yours. chill.
@PDMcG1091 It's fine you have an opinion, but I'm not clear on what the basis is for it. Why make out the US as responsible for the Arrow's demise when there's no evidence to suggest they had anything to do with it? Very much on the contrary, the US was helpful with the Arrow program. At first, you cited a "fictional* event from the movie (hint: it never occurred) as being the reason the US opposed the Arrow, yet there's nothing to even establish the US was opposed to the program at all.
To the day he died my Dad (ex-RCAF) never forgave them for canceling the Arrow. It may have been legit at some level to cancel it, but trying to make it look like it never happened, that's something else.
It's ok to be proud but the Arrow's planned engines (never installed) weren't proven, the weapons pack was a good idea, but it wasn't even at prototype stage-no advanced avionics, no ejection seat,a primitive canopy.Addl work was prohibitively costly. No, Diefenbaker did well to cut our losses. Dont feel bad, the US/UK cancelled big jet projects then as well. RCAF aircrew were happy with the F101. Recognize the Arrow was unaffordable-hey; we got schools and health care instead-so be happy!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what a bunch of morons. this project failed only in canada. it was very successful in the hands of the usa. {the world bankers military arm.} to this day there is no one in canada or the usa military or government that has the balls to stand up to them and the power to stay alive. .Those bankers are practicing satanists and evil to the core . And that is the real secret that you now are aware of.
The Arrow did employ area rule, just forward of the ramps for the intakes. The saw tooth notches in the wings were to control pitch up inherent in delta wing aircraft at high alpha. The highest speed achieved in the program was Mach 1.98.
Suggest you do some research on this bird before you post. You'll be surprised by how 'average' it actually was compared to several contemporary US designs.
Google 'Diefenbaker and Americans'...you'll be equally surprised to learn how much the then-conservative PM actually disliked them.
a pitty...we Canadians could actually be very powerful economically, militarily, and politically if we actually focused and tried. Look at all the resources we have!! we have the tools, the technology, why would we destroy something that could've surpased the Americans?!?! they were busy with the Soviet Union and communism we could've done something!!!
@flightrulez: The F-4 first flew on May 27, 1958, only two months after the CF-105's maiden flight. It set a world altitude record of 98,556' the following year, a speed record of 1,606mph in 1961, and a low-altitude speed record of 902mph in 1962 that would stand for 16 years. It entered operational service with the US Navy in 1960. It was God's hammer.
haha. everyone is so misinformed about this topic. It was detroyed due to speculation of KGB intelligence being within the avro productions. this was proven true in Mitrokhin archives.
We didnt only make the best airplane, the best engines, we also had the best (and the TRULY FIRST) Look-down Shoot-down radar.
We would have also had the best missiles (comparable to todays AMRAAM's) the Sparrow 2D
Theres alot more then the plane and engines we designed
We spearheaded modern high tech aviation, and held everyone elses hand so that some of them (France/Britain mainly) could today get to where we were 50 years ago!
No doubt US influence was the biggest factor in its demise.
deifenbaker wasn't entirely sucking up to america. the plane was destroyed because if the liberal made plane returned it would be harder for him to be re elected
actually the U.S forced Diefenbaker to Purchase there bombarc missiles and destroy the arrow in exchange or else they wouldnt help us in anyway. (pretty much the U.S did not want to be out done in design) we were so close and we as a nation could have been a superpower and the U.S would be in the back seat
That prick signed a memorandum of understanding, where Canada agreed to never pursue its own military projects again, in return for shared development and access to "select" US projects
In other words, they wanted us help them design high tech shit so they could sell it, rather than tapping into Canada's superior brain power and taking the market share from them.
Look at it this way, imagine the police state Canada would be today if our M.I.C. was like that of USA, controlling their president.
Can you please show me, precisely, where the Defence Development Sharing Agreement states that? You are aware that even if Diefenbaker signed an agreement harbouring that provision, it could've easily been overturned by the Pearson Liberals when they renewed the agreement on Nov 21, 1963.
this whould have been one of the besat fighter interceptors of its time and in to the late 80s but no deifbaker had to belly upt o the yanks and scrap the project
you're obviously close-minded and quite egoistic. Idiot, I am an atheist, but I am pro-monarchy not because of God, which I obviously don't believe in, but for many other reasons.
So shut your ignorant trap and go shoot yourself, I can tell you have very little friends.
Ever since the Avro Arrow was cancelled I've cursed the name of John Diefenbaker.

RazorCell7 3 months ago
@RazorCell7 No actually it was the British regular army.
njdevil281 3 months ago

RTPye117 9 months ago
@RTPye117 Are you serious? There were numerous types of supersonic production aircraft already in service. F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-106. The Arrow did not pioneer controlled, level supersonic flight, or even bisonic flight.

Sweiland, Canada doesn't train the US military. I provided a few sources in my comments to him, so please feel free to use them against future overly-patriotic, imbeciles from the north.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@sweiland75 Well, our special forces out rank America.
My brothers friend is in JTF2 and he went up against the Green Berets and the Navy SEALS, and they won both times, Green Berets : Killed all 18 in 11 minutes.
Navy SEALS : Killed 11 captured 6 in 18 minutes.
So, obviously we have a better special forces.
Also, America has asked out Military to train them MULTIPUL times.
So, if that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.
flightrulez 1 year ago
@flightrulez
"our special forces out rank America."
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom You cannot proove what has happened in mock combat, it was a classified scurmish, and actually, America, has asked Canada for training help in their navy, and seriously, a lot of those articles are bias out there, I will never trust an article that is bias, because I know that it is incorrect.
flightrulez 1 year ago
The article I refered you to is a "Canadian article", found on the website "Canada.com". Secondly, the US doesn't "ask" Canada for help, our militaries work in conjunction with each other on a daily basis, even did so even during the Iraqi war which your propaganda machine so wrongly claims Canada had no part of. Third, being that mock training also happens daily between our militaries, Canadians fail on a regular basis against Americans as well as against each other, and vise versa.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@flightrulez
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom Sheesh, sorry for upsetting you...
But, our tanks and APC's are Canadian
flightrulez 1 year ago
Everyone who is on your side, is on our side, and everyone who we're against, you're against. It sounds like you don't understand how Canada and the US work. The main difference would be that Canadians have the unique advantage of disguising their military intervention around the world with ours. The same could be said with ignorance, being fat, isolated etc. Everyone (including Canadians) is far too busy criticizing the US for these things to take notice of your actions and short-comings.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
Actually, you may not realise this, but you guys always critisize us, see only our comedians make fun of you, we barely ever make fun of you now, because you actualy have a leader that isn't an "inbred".
flightrulez 1 year ago
I'd have to say since I began living abroad nine years ago, the only ones who have ever given me a hard time are 30% (or so) of the Canadians I've met. Other Americans, Aussies, Brits and even Koeans (I'm living in Korea now) have told me they have also noticed Canadians and their anti-American attitude. Americans do not have the inferiority complex you do, there fore we have no reason to be as competitive with you as you are with us, but I do relaize the US is FAR from perfect.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
I was told that if I went down to the states for a college or university education, my mark would increase by %10, so, I highly doubt that we are inferior.
Also, do you realise that more than half of our modern population are immagrants, so, therefore you would have to base your opinion on their country of oragin.
And also, I do know that I am not an intelectual, for I am only in Grade 10, so, don't judge Canada's education programs on the opnion of a 15 year old.
flightrulez 1 year ago
I never said you were "inferior", in fact I don't think either side is better than the other as we are all North Americans.
"I was told if I went to the US for college my marks would increase 10%"
Being told something is more or less "hearsay". Your comments have been nothing but a series of "we are better than you" themed rants, and what fosters this is the propaganda you're fed. Canada is not "better" than the US (and vise versa), despite popular belief among many Canadians.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
Well, I am sorry if these things that i have said gave you that thought.
But I am just stating information that has been given to me.
And I guess I agree with your statement.
flightrulez 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom Oh that's right.. I forgot you guys have been vacationing in Cuba all this time and are part of the British Commonwealth now.
We have many common interests, but we are not the same on the International scene. (Don't get me wrong I'm not partaking in the USvCAN rhetoric, just clarifying your over-generalization)
Kleehv 1 year ago
I've been living abroad now for over 9 years and we are nearly exactly the same my friend. (The Canadians and Americans I know here in Korea are the same). Ironically, I have also met Americans who have been to Cuba. It's not that we cannot go there, it's that we must go via 3rd nation.
I know you would like an identity of your own, which is why this propaganda film was made. It's the same reason behind your beer ads and Rick Mercer as well. I'm sorry, but I don't buy it.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom
Canadians do have an identity. We can't help it if you're too thick to notice.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
If sewing your flag to your backpack and constantly reminding people which celebrties are Canadian is what you consider an identity, then yes, you have one. Please spare me your next comment, which will naturally claim that Americans sew the Canadian flag to theirs as well. It simply isn't true my friend, for I have never in an entire decade met even one American who does.
The Canadians I get along with best are those who love living outside of Canada an who put their flags away.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom
I'm not saying one is better than the other, but to claim we're the same is total bunk.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
@v3ntulus
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
I haven't the foggiest why you keep going on about flags. I never said anything about them.
You're telling me someone from New York City is the same as someone from northern Ontario (like me)? Culture goes beyond food, religion, clothing, music, and movies. It delves into mannerisms, political beliefs, and the integration of other cultures. Canadian culture is a mix of English, French, and First Nations. And our political ideology is different - not better, necessarily - but different.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
You think Canadian mannerisms are different?? Canadians (like Americans) are big, poorly dressed (sneakers, athletic attire, etc.) and are extremely isolated. Nearly 3/4 of you DO NOT speak French. The Americans I've met in the five nations I've lived in the past 10 years integrated fine, and were more than willing to do so. You're a democratic society and hold free elections, just like ours. There are of course differences between some of our people, but over all, we share the same culture.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
In Ontario alone, every kid has to have French education from Grades 1 to 9 and can take French beyond that, but 1 to 9 is mandatory. Ontario is almost half of Canada's population and add Quebec and New Brunswick. Northern Ontario is hugely French, especially northeastern Ontario. The Metis on the prairies also speak French, and there are many francophone communities there too.
It doesn't mean everyone in Ontario is fully bilingual, but those were born and raised in Ontario have some French.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
@v3ntulus
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom
Hahahaha. Don't take them seriously.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
@v3ntulus
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom
Unfortunately, it penetrates above the 49th as well.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
@v3ntulus
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@JohnQRandom
Hahaha. You misunderstood me. I wasn't saying not being bilingual is retardation, but I was referring to all these urban myths and legends and BS statistics being thrown around as if they are fact by people who should know better (like whoever told you that 75% of Canada is bilingual).
v3ntulus 1 year ago
@v3ntulus
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
My apologies then. I misread. That's what I get for commenting at 4-5am local. My French is pretty rusty. I understand a lot more than I speak, but I could probably hold a conversation. In a couple years, I'm applying to the Canadian Forces as an officer. All CF officers are fluent in English and French. So in a couple years I'll be able to speak fluently. My parents are immigrants. My mother had no French exposure. My father spoke it fluently as he went to a university in France (among others).
v3ntulus 1 year ago
Well if you can understand it then you definitely have the hrd part out of the way. I've worked in Russia twice, and at my high point had a 900 word vocabulary, and I could say virtually anything I needed to. As soon as a person would start speaking though, I usually caught bits and pieces of what they were sayig to conclude what they were getting at. The same for Spanish, which I studied before going to Ecuador 3 years ago. I've since forgotten most of both languages unfortunately.
JohnQRandom 1 year ago
That's the same with me and Portuguese. Both my parents are from Portugal. My dad, when he was alive, studied linguistics and spoke Portuguese (his native language), French, English, Italian, Spanish, and a bit of German all fluently, without accents. If you came up to him and had a conversation with him, you'd have no idea he was an immigrant. So I grew up exposed to all those languages. I understand keywords and piece together what someone is trying to say in all of those but German.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
What kind of work do you do that takes you all over the world?
v3ntulus 1 year ago
I'm an English teacher, and I obtained a TEFL certificate in Prague back in 2004. With this certificate, I'm able to qualify for a vast range of job oportunities, including the public school system in Korea which is where I am now. Prior to my TEFL gig, I worked for Peace Corps in Russia (the first time I was there).
I've just been accepted to the University of New England Australia, and I'm going to do an online masters throught them so I can start applying for university jobs.

Nice. Must be great to travel and see new places. Best of luck to you! :)

When I see Americans call Canadian war dead "fags", I know not to base my opinion of Americans on that.
v3ntulus 1 year ago
And I just want to clarify that just because I'm pointing out there ARE fundamental differences between Canadians and Americans, I'm not anti-American. My girlfriend is American so it'd be rather odd if I was.
There are differences, but the similarities are way more important. The differences, however, show that we are a distinct and proud people. If you take offense at some Canadians being proud they share a heritage with some celebrities, that's your insecurity. Eh, we're proud. Live with it

JohnQRandom 1 year ago
@sweiland75 YES IT WOULD. But then the Soviet Union eventually came out with the MiG-25 Foxbat so if this program had been done in the 1970s maybe the Avro Arrow would've had a chance to be Canada's own supersonic fighter.
AirForceRabbits 1 year ago
@AirForceRabbits

@spuzmanX "Greedy Americans" were in support of the Arrow program. You seem to be another one with an emotional need to blame the US for the failure of the Arrow program, but such a position is not supported by historical evidence.

You from all your comments on the subject seem to need to express your opinion on everyone elses opinion. my advice is to talk the cock out of your mouth.
spuzmanX 1 year ago
@spuzmanX I have been calling what I believe to be irrational opinions, and have provided verifiable counterarguments. Can you refute the points I have brought up? I have contended that the Americans offered assistance in the Arrow program, which makes it hard to believe they also worked to kill it. Can you offer up a quality source that states otherwise?
LeopoldPlumtree 1 year ago
this is my personal opinion but I am pretty sure when the Arrow did the high speed pass over the Niagara Air force Base our useless neighbors to our south didn't like the fact the we had something bigger, faster, and stronger then they did and wouldn't be surprised if they told our government that we couldn't have it. becuase they didn't want another country having something better then they did.
PDMcG1091 1 year ago
@PDMcG1091 Those useless neighbors to the south provided technical and research assistance, lent a B-47 for testing of the Iroquois engine and even offered to subsidize the Arrow program toward the end.
Your opinion appears to be based largely on what you saw in a heavily fictionalized movie. As great as the Arrow was (or could potentially have been), it wasn't the only aircraft being developed at the time.
LeopoldPlumtree 1 year ago
Like I said, they didn't want another country to have something better then they did.
PDMcG1091 1 year ago
@PDMcG1091 But again, the US lent a hand in the Arrow's development...why would they have done so if they were worried about its potential? Why would the Arrow have been so alarming to the US, given that they already had a similarly-capable interceptor in the F-106 (and more advanced ones on the drawing board)? From the US's point of view, having another aircraft like the CF-105 guarding the north pole would have been all the better.
LeopoldPlumtree 1 year ago
@LeopoldPlumtree Perhaps they made a mistake of giving us the few supplies of putting the prototypes in production and probably didn't think it would be that great of an achievement at the time. People DO make mistakes you know.
PDMcG1091 1 year ago
@PDMcG1091 Your speculation doesn't match up with the known facts. The US were very much kept in the loop with respect to the developments in the Arrow program. The USAF followed the program closely and the NACA were consulted on technical matters at numerous times. The truth of the matter is that there's no evidence the US had anything to do with Arrow's cancellation or that they were worried of its potential. Fictionalized movies are not good sources of information.
LeopoldPlumtree 1 year ago
@LeopoldPlumtree I didn't say I was speculating. It's simply an opinion. MY opinion. There aren't alot of known facts to go along with. I have my own and opinion and you probably have yours. chill.
PDMcG1091 1 year ago
@PDMcG1091 It's fine you have an opinion, but I'm not clear on what the basis is for it. Why make out the US as responsible for the Arrow's demise when there's no evidence to suggest they had anything to do with it? Very much on the contrary, the US was helpful with the Arrow program. At first, you cited a "fictional* event from the movie (hint: it never occurred) as being the reason the US opposed the Arrow, yet there's nothing to even establish the US was opposed to the program at all.
LeopoldPlumtree 1 year ago

Recognize the Arrow was unaffordable-hey; we got schools and health care instead-so be happy!

xtremefxguitar 2 years ago
Pressure from the U.S, they didn't want us to have technology that surpassed their own.
canadassweetie 2 years ago
a pitty...we Canadians could actually be very powerful economically, militarily, and politically if we actually focused and tried. Look at all the resources we have!! we have the tools, the technology, why would we destroy something that could've surpased the Americans?!?! they were busy with the Soviet Union and communism we could've done something!!!
Nintendoholic07 2 years ago 2
from what I've heard, the Americans couldn't compete with the Avro so they pressured the Canadian government to destroy it...
timpmarsh 2 years ago
Sadly that's exactly what happened. Canada's PM rolled over and took it from the US. Sad really; the Arrow project could have been amazing.
Hadra568 2 years ago
I thought we scrapped the project because each jet was too expensive.

CF-105 is inferior to many existing designs, namely, the F-106.
Beliserius1 2 years ago 2
@Beliserius1 i entirely disagree it is superior to any design nowadays
Nirad007 1 year ago
@Nirad007
No it isn't. Even a clean F-4 phantom can make the Arrow sweat.
Beliserius1 1 year ago
@Beliserius1 I wonder if you realise that the F-4 wasn't actually in service near to when the Avro was built?
Also, you obviously don't realise that the Avro was an Interceptor, not a fighter.
flightrulez 1 year ago
@flightrulez: The F-4 first flew on May 27, 1958, only two months after the CF-105's maiden flight. It set a world altitude record of 98,556' the following year, a speed record of 1,606mph in 1961, and a low-altitude speed record of 902mph in 1962 that would stand for 16 years. It entered operational service with the US Navy in 1960. It was God's hammer.
raynus1 1 year ago
@flightrulez
The time F-4 phantom was built was around the same time the arrow was built.
Both filled the interceptor roles, while the phantom was capable of doing more.

It's time to get over this and let it go. Move on, guys!

Ummm, try CONSERVATIVES! Dief was blue. The Arrow was started by the Liberals and killed by the Conservatives. Look it up.
Petor59 2 years ago 2
haha. everyone is so misinformed about this topic. It was detroyed due to speculation of KGB intelligence being within the avro productions. this was proven true in Mitrokhin archives.

@snazzy099 lies
Nirad007 1 year ago
The reality is that Deifenbaker did not like Americans and mistrusted them immensely...and yes, he was a western Canadian conservative.
Don't base your history of the Arrow on cheezy CBC docu-dramas.
raynus1 2 years ago
Fucking pussy ass conservatives, letting the US bully us around.
OH GOD SOMEONE OTHER THAN US HAS MADE A SUPERIOR AIRPLANE I GUESS WE SHOULD BITCH ABOUT IT UNTIL WE ARRRR #1 LOLOLLLLLLOOOOOOOOL GO AMERICUH.
Even if we didn't ever NEED the Arrow, we still could have kept it and improved upon its design and made different, better aircraft.
But our damn government bent over and took it hard from the US.
*sigh*
Dilo22 2 years ago 2
Canada made some serious Jet engines as well, such a shame.
MegaBrits 2 years ago
We didnt only make the best airplane, the best engines, we also had the best (and the TRULY FIRST) Look-down Shoot-down radar.
We would have also had the best missiles (comparable to todays AMRAAM's) the Sparrow 2D
Theres alot more then the plane and engines we designed
We spearheaded modern high tech aviation, and held everyone elses hand so that some of them (France/Britain mainly) could today get to where we were 50 years ago!
No doubt US influence was the biggest factor in its demise.
mattmatt115 2 years ago
Last time I checked it was simply because the Arrow just got way too expensive, and that's why it was terminated.
TwistedShrapnel 3 years ago 3
The Arrow should never havee been destroyed.
Bendigo6000 3 years ago 16
deifenbaker wasn't entirely sucking up to america. the plane was destroyed because if the liberal made plane returned it would be harder for him to be re elected
theimmortalemporer 3 years ago
actually the U.S forced Diefenbaker to Purchase there bombarc missiles and destroy the arrow in exchange or else they wouldnt help us in anyway. (pretty much the U.S did not want to be out done in design) we were so close and we as a nation could have been a superpower and the U.S would be in the back seat
crazykid164 3 years ago
That prick signed a memorandum of understanding, where Canada agreed to never pursue its own military projects again, in return for shared development and access to "select" US projects
In other words, they wanted us help them design high tech shit so they could sell it, rather than tapping into Canada's superior brain power and taking the market share from them.
Look at it this way, imagine the police state Canada would be today if our M.I.C. was like that of USA, controlling their president.
mattmatt115 2 years ago
Can you please show me, precisely, where the Defence Development Sharing Agreement states that? You are aware that even if Diefenbaker signed an agreement harbouring that provision, it could've easily been overturned by the Pearson Liberals when they renewed the agreement on Nov 21, 1963.
raynus1 2 years ago
this whould have been one of the besat fighter interceptors of its time and in to the late 80s but no deifbaker had to belly upt o the yanks and scrap the project

This beauty was way ahead of the Americans.
If you want a good laugh at the sheer incompetence of the Americans then YouTube for
"The XB-70 incident".
It was one F**K up after another, no wonder they resort to dirty tricks.

shameful..absolutely shameful...death to america...after we trade with them
kylejones7 3 years ago
Yes correct, look up what happened to us in the UK when we shared Miles M.52 data with the Americans in exchange for theirs.
They held their data back and created with our M.52, the Bell X-1.
Real shitty people.

death to america?! WHAT THE FUCK?!
You can kiss my ass you filthy liberal piece of shit ontarian pansy fag.
And I am not American. I'm from rural SK, but anyone who calls death to any of our allies can suck my cock.
wilkes85 2 years ago
first off you ignorant piece of shit, im not in anyway associated with ontario... i'm from BC, 2ndly dumbass, it was sarcasm.
"death to america, after we trade with them" this represents our culture of trying to be un-american yet heavily relying on economically.
yes i am a liberal, liberal economically and socially, pro-monarchy and anti-religion, don't see how that has anything to do with what i said.
kylejones7 2 years ago
Pro-Monarchy? WTF are you talking about?
What kind of moron would support a queen lol. God people really are sheep. "Please rule over me queen.....we're not worthy!!!"
lol tool.
joeybadoey 2 years ago
you're obviously close-minded and quite egoistic. Idiot, I am an atheist, but I am pro-monarchy not because of God, which I obviously don't believe in, but for many other reasons.
So shut your ignorant trap and go shoot yourself, I can tell you have very little friends.
