  • PS: have a gun smith install & center the brake, cause it it's off by only 200/1000th off concentric center the brake will cause bullet drift, bullet yaw, bad harmonic, and push off the plumb- vertical anti rise that the brake was made for. ya a bit 'picky' but these AR 'machines' really require 100/1000th +- tolerance in some areas to be at there optimum.

  • I almost got this but ended up buying a YHM 5m1 instead.

  • great vid.i was going to install a flashhider on my savage bolt action .308 but i think your right that a brake is better.the threads are 5/8 24 so ,any brake that has same specs. would work?

  • @redzonehunter69 If the bullet diameter and threads match then it should work.

  • Doesnt the crush washer, crush to make the snug fit?

  • @MrAvail18 Yes, it compresses.

  • What size are those peel washers?

  • if the break magically fit your ar without the need for any washers could/should you install it that way

  • @Glockcrazy19 No, unless you lock-tite the hell out of it. The washers act as counter-pressure which prevent the brake from loosening during fire. Luck would be having correct alignment of the brake with an unmodified crush washer. You could lock-tite it but I'd recommend playing with varying washers to get the fit. It's just better to have metal acting as counter thread pressure than just a chemical compound, my opinion.

  • @the308capital thank you, very thorough response. got yourself a new sub buddy :)

  • As anti gun ebay is you can get peel washers for the AR.

  • anyone know how to install on shotgun? i dont see any threads on my shotgun.

  • @poonjoonoob If you want to thread your shotgun barrel you can go to the gunsmith and they'll do it. Not sure on prices though. Hope that helped.

  • Thanks, that's where I'll go. You've been really responsive and helpful.

  • @MultiBigBill The gun community helps each other.

  • Damn if I can find any peel washers. No hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot, Ace), automotive store, Bass Pro gunsmiths either know what I'm asking for or have any. Any ideas on where to get some?

  • @MultiBigBill Brownells stock # 078-015-005 ($25 for pack of 5), MidwayUSA product #: 654454 ($3).

  • I noticed you had the crush washer on when you were checking for the size of the correct peel washer. Then, it looked like the crush was off when you were actually installing the break. You only use the peel washer, correct? If so, why did you have the crush washer on when you were doing the sizing? BTW... nice video. Very educational.

  • @BeagleBro I see the part your talking about. Yes, only use the peel washer. I was using the crush washer as part of the muzzle brake just to show how to fill the gap with the peel washer. It would be just a peel washer and the muzzle brake in the end. Now, some barrels are threaded just right to allow correct alignment with a crush washer, if that is the case then use the crush washer. Most cases though the alignment is off just enough to require the peel washer. Thanks for watching.

  • @the308capital Could you use a crush washer and a peel washer? Would this be good to do since the peel washers are softer than crush washers? Great video by the way.

  • @ZapRousdour You could but one or the other is the preferred way to go. Ideally the crush washer is the best because it is the most rigid. I have 2 rifles were the muzzle brake aligns perfectly with just crush washers. I have one rifle with just a peel washer and one with both. I didn't want to bridge too big a gap with soft peel washers so I used both to have as much strong steel as I could get but the peel was still needed to align correctly. The orientation has remained w/ 1000 rounds.

  • What exactly is the difference between an AR-15 and an M4A1?

  • @mac19971 The only two differences are that the M4A1 has a 14.5 inch barrel and select fire ability (SAFE, SEMI, FULL AUTO). The AR-15 (in this video) has a 16 inch barrel and is only semi-auto. The original rifles developed by Eugene Stoner where called the AR-10 and AR-15. The Military always changes the name to M-(whatever). M-16 (20 inch barrel) or M4 (14.5inch barrel) in this case.

  • @the308capital I see. Thanks for the intel.

  • And a Thumbs UP for part 2 :)

  • @WORRO01 Glad you liked it.

  • Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I knew what a flash suppressor was for, but I had no idea what the purpose for a muzzle break was. Keep it up.

  • @tekneck73 Thanks.

  • Great video, very detailed thanks a ton. I'm new to tac rifles and I was wondering how to get my muzzel brake to line up on my Kel Tec Su16. Called a gun smith and he said he rethreads the muzzel so it lines up!! Now have to find peel washers.

  • @MultiBigBill Thanks for watching. Those peel washers really make the difference in exact alignment. I heard those SU-16s are great rifles and very light weight. You will feel the difference with the muzzle brake installed.

  • I am thinking of installing my own YHM flash hider to use with my phantom suppressor, but the instructions say not to use any washers and no lock-tight, so I am wondering if you can just twist down on it until its super tight. But I am worried because the instructions say I have to be within .005 inches of bore concentricity or something. I thought it would be as simple as screwing the damn thing on, but it seems like it might be something I should take to a gunsmith to be safe. Your opinion?

  • @labartic I would talk to a gunsmith. The main function of the washers is to apply pressure on the threads to prevent loosening over time. How Yankee Hill overcomes this w/o washers or lock tight I'm unfamiliar with. The only guns I have w/ muzzle brake and no washers are my AKs which have a plunger that catches a groove in the brake that prevents counter-rotation. Other than AKs, all my ARs have washers and loc-tite. Talk to a gunsmith to be safe.

  • Apparently you don't really know how a crush washer is supposed to work. You absolutely can "clock" your muzzle device with a crush washer. Major manufacturers do it every day.

  • @eric10mm You can only clock it so much. Once torque is maxed out, you have to live with the positioning. Sometimes it works out and is aligned correctly and other times it doesn't, when it doesn't peel washers make it a hell of alot easier.

  • @the308capital PART 2

If you mount one up in a vise and do it, you will see that you can in fact time the device correctly using just a crush washer.

You can crank on it until it lines up and not do any damage to any parts.

Check out the Brownells video on mounting a muzzle device and click the "Instructional Videos" link at the bottom of the page and under "Assembling Mil Spec & Free Float Barrels" click the third video from the left.
