IF the telescope was symbolic, it was more for his yearning of something outside his reach, like the stars or Lana (at the time). If you want to look at it that way and try to get all "deep" with me, perhaps Lana's krpytonite necklace was a foreshadowing of the fact they could never be together.

@TheJustineWho He didn't even really know her at the time. He was just admiring her from afar. I think the idea of Lana attributed to his love for her. He looked over a lot of crazy flaws she had and things she did, and it's because he loved her before he even knew her.

It's fine that you're into that Edward Cullen stalking you crap, but it sent off alarms when I first saw it on Smallville, and he really didn't have a relationship with Lana when he watched her from afar and really loved her without knowing her. That's why it was so hard for him to move on from her. He made her an idol that was hard to tear down. It's The Great Gatsby.

@Suuuuumaaa You're speaking as if the telescope is a literary technique for watching over her, but it was actually very literal, so it's not technically symbolism. IF the telescope was symbolic, it was more for his yearning of something outside his reach, like the stars or Lana (at the time). If you want to look at it that way and try to get all "deep" with me, perhaps Lana's krpytonite necklace was a foreshadowing of the fact they could never be together.

Clark always associated Lana with DREAMS! but it also symobolized him watching over her, he did NOT need to tell her that but he DID anyways, because he LOVED her THAT much!
