I saw him perform live in Westchester a couple years back in the Fun Fest and it was incredible. He was so down to earth and you can tell he was really happy to be there. I would love to see him again!
Dennis DeYoung is hands down the greatest voice I have ever heard. His former band which I call, "Styx tribute band" , continues their dive bar tour. I wouldn't use the loose change in my front pocket,(.48 cents) to see his old band. Can't wait to see DDY again on his next tour!
@GetThyDome Very well said. Dennis DeYoung is Styx. That voice is angelic and is the voice of Styx. The Shaw/Young braintrust has reduced this version of Styx to a tribute dive bar act at best. That cheap imposter they hired Larry Gowen, is horrible. When he attempts to sing and disrespects Dennis' songs, I swear it sounds like his nads are in a bench vise. Keep it up Styx tribute band, maybe I'll hire you for my next backyard BBQ.
Kilroy was what broke up Styx in the 80s, and this song is what revived them in the 90s. I personally love Shaw but I admit that Styx isn't the same without Dennis. I hope that they will at least tour together before Styx loses another band member...
nothing can beat deyoungs version of this song, I was just listening to gowan singing it and it is good but I just wish styx would leave the deyoung songs to deyoung and go on with the other stuff cause they will never be able to compete with deyoungs voice.
Christmas day, turning on the clock radio I'd been given as a gift, scrolling through the stations to find something to listen to, and this is the song that made me stop. I was an instant fan, and have loved THIS voice of Styx since that day. Dennis DeYoung, thank you for making Styx so worth listening to!
well i've been a styx fan for years i quit being one in 1999 when jy and tommy the back stabbers they are, forced dennis out of the band, i mean no matter how they tried to spin it for there reasons, what they did showed no class, to treat him the way they did, after everything he gave to that group, not to mention the countless songs he contributed and now styx says they have performed more live shows then they have there entire career after 1999, to bad they substitued quality for quantity
No disrespect to JY or TS. They are great guys and excellent musicians. They both know their stuff! But Styx is not the same without DDY. They're good, but they all complimented each other so well! They seemed to feed off of each other and that (IMO) is what made Styx... STYX. All those guys, TS, JY, DDY, Chuck and John will be sorely missed as a group. Together they conquered THE WORLD!!! I must add... RIP John! I played many "air drums" to your recorded tracks!!!! STYX FOREVER!!!!!
Like i always said JY and tommy have no class and i lost all respect for them in forcing DDY out of styx the way they did, from the clips i've seen here on youtube i wouldn't spend a friggin dime to see styx now adays, the last 2 styx album just plan suck, dennis deyoung was the man, what he contributed to that group is what made them great.....oh how i miss the good old days i'll just have to remember those concerts of my youth
How can you "Laugh" at the translation to the Bolero? He told me this is where he got the idea for this song one day when he was teaching a class and heard the song. It's obvious in the song this is what influenced it! I met him in Melbourne Fl in 2005 and he shared this with me. I saw him with the orchestra and I've seen Styx without him. To me, Dennis is better without Styx any day, then they are without him. Long time Styx fan.
I went to see him in concert with the orchestra and part of the tour was cancelled. One of the issues that Dennis had was not with Styx, it was the fact that he has a rare disorder where the stage lights cause issues with his brain if they are too bright and he physically cannot perform. That is one of the main factors to his career with Styx and solo career being so sketchy.
I agree it is sad Tommy and JY gave DeYoung the boot...
I just listened to Lady live with their new singer on youtube here and I felt like my ears were starting to bleed..had to come listen to the original to soothe them!!!! ;-)
I see all the arguments about Dennis not being there.Last week saw the triple bill with Styx,Foreigner and Kansas.Styx was awesome, despite him not being part of the group.I guess it's like seeing Journey and not seeing Steve Perry there.Seen them twice w/o him and they were great, but not exactly the same.
Tommy Shaw and James Young are idiots. I mean who in their right mind would not want this man in the band anymore. Dennis DeYoung was, is, and always will be STYX.
Haha! Yeah, they re-did a Beatles song...AND NAILED IT! It was better than when Lennon sang it. Oh, then there are Do Things My Way, Fields of the Brave, Waiting for Our Time, One With Everything, These are the Times...Listen to these songs. They are fantastic! Plus, the new line-up has life in it! Dennis is blah, which sounds odd because he was always the one shooting for the Broadway approach.
@salmoncorey: I guess it depends greatly on what you think Styx should sound like. "Babe" or "Foolin' Yourself?" "Lady" or "Renegade?" "The Best of Times" or "Blue Collar Man?" TS & JY wanted a heavier sound; DDY wanted a more theatrical sound. So they went their separate ways, like Lennon and McCartney. It happens.
He is soooo amazing!
