The driver is Derek Bell. This was from 1983 (He was a factory Rothman's driver.)
Also, the data is incorrect. The car is a 956, fitted with a special "long tail" for the Circuit de la Sarthe. This allowed the cars to trap 248MPH on the Mulsanne Highway. Pronounced "MOOLAWN"
3.5 miles in 40 seconds...
Notice how late Derek brakes from 248mph down to 70mph for the right turn...
"(EDIT:It seems the car is actually a 956, the version of the car that race in europe before the evolved american version 962 was created to met safety regulations)"
abchaz01 zr1 are piece of..... Noting like Porsche the manufacturer that won the most race on history read it. Non Americans can't beat that you gringo.
The timing of this lap is considerable considering he started from a pit stop. Great car, great driver. The glory days of Le Mans 24 Hour and group c.
This is from "In Car 956" which just came out on DVD. Highly recommended. It shows Lemans and several other great historical tracks around Europe. If I remember correctly from my VHS copy from years ago, Derek Bell said the 956's reach 246mph on the Mulsanne straight. High caliber #&^$!!
are you fucking kidding? they're completely differnet. so much in fact that i would never have thought of even putting those two in a sentence that didn't include "the best tracks in the world"...
thats crazy, i go kart race and the steering wheel for this car is as big a the one in my go kart and he's piloting somthing that weighs at least 1000 more punds than a go kart. that turbo blowoff valve sounds amazing.WOW
The most glorious straight in circuit racing, amazing. The straight had be be shortened with chicanes because the cars were simply too fast. Today's car are considerably slower on top end and have less HP than the '80s turbo BRUTES!
i believe this is in the mid80s..correct me if im wrong..eveywhere i hear about fast cars goin for the highest speed trophy(F1,veyron, koenigseg) they all complain bout the tires not being able to take the speeds..i mean damn..we can build aircraft tires that last 50+landings..and those cars at lemans were doin 400kph and race turns for laps on end..and the issue now after 20+yrs is still tire growth and blisters?cmooon..i wonder how that right turn kink in the straight looks at night.on rain
It's in 85 or 86, the problem with F1 tyres, it's that they grip but they also assume the suspension, they are thin and very smooth on the side, it's hard to build, problem with others cars is that they must be road tyres, on the 956/962, they didn't care about that.
Now this straight line called "les Hunaudières" has been cut with a chicane, it was too dangerous, a thing inteesting about this car is that there was a street legal one sold by Dauer: 750cv and 1050Kgs...no comment...
The 956 version was the original and European spec. Porsche created the 962 to race in IMSA in the US. It was redesigned to put the driver's legs behind the front axle. So, I imagine this is a 956 unless LeMans opened up racing to both specifications. Don't know for sure.

If you compare this footage with Derek Bells 1983 Le Man lap in his dvd In Car 956 they are idetical.
That puff of dirt and dust from the car infront on the apex of the Muslanne Straight is identical.
The 962 may sound like its cousin the 956 but this is definately a 956 being driven hard by 5 times Le Man winner Mr Bell.

This is Porsche 956, not 962. Year is probably 1983.

ok he was definitely going way faster than 217mph down the Mulsanne, it had to be at least 225mph, PROBABLY 230.
DoctorNumber46 3 years ago
Yes thats Le Mans. He was going about 230 MPH down that back straight.

I think it's actually a 962. The car is currently for sale and I found this clip on the site.

The 956 version was the original and European spec. Porsche created the 962 to race in IMSA in the US. It was redesigned to put the driver's legs behind the front axle. So, I imagine this is a 956 unless LeMans opened up racing to both specifications. Don't know for sure.
rawoodruff 3 years ago 2
as for Derek Bell being the driver, I'm not sure. In the history of the car their is no mention of this, but I'll ask him next time I see him.
