@horselover8408 The 2014 is an excellent diet for rats. I free feed mine. But if you want to control the "intake" I believe it's 55 grams a day or 3 blocks each rat.
@jorats OK because I have a friend and that's what she does. She has two rats and she puts all their daily food in one bowl and one of her rats eats ALL of the food. And the other doesn't get any. SO she asked me to find out what she should do! (she doesn't have a youtube account so she couldn't do it) Should she just feed them seperately or what?
@horselover8408 free feed means I fill up their bowls and I don't fill it back up unless it's all gone. But I also go find all the stashes in the cage and put the food back in the bowl. But, if your friend is worried that one rat is not getting her share of food which is very rare, she can separate the two a couple of times a day to make sure one eats.
@jorats Do you just fill it or do you put the certain amount of grams of food in the bowl multipled by how ever many rats you have to make sure they get enough?
@horselover8408 I just fill it up. But that's because I have quite a few rats in the cage. If I only had two or three, I'd probably put in there 3 blocks per rat.
@TephraFalls Yes, frozen peas, run them under hot water then I place them in a dish of lukewarm water for the rats unless if it's very hot out, then I place in a dish of cold water, helps the rats cool off.
I only ever had two rats at any time :-( since my mum couldn't stand them, but one of them would always just jump in the water and trap peas against the bottom.
@swirlypoo101 They are all rescues. I would rescue say a group of four, later rescue a group of two and intro them together. Takes about a week of intros each time.
Pea fishing! Really need to do this again. LOL. And what's even better than a rat who eats both the inside, AND the outside? A rat who's too afraid to go in the water, but really really wants peas! Then you have clean-up duty all taken care of for you! :)
That was great! Meeko, the hairless, thought it was a pea fishing contest. Who can eat the most peas in record time. LOL! and Gera, always the gentlerat, eating the pea skin as well. Sweet video!
LOVE it! This is so entertaining to watch. The shelter I volunteer at currently has two 10 month old albino sisters that I absoloutely adore. Aparently I'm the one who ends up caring for the rats the most, which is what I'm now famously known there for, haha. I'll have to try this with them!
They all look adorable fishing for peas! I wish I had a room that I could devote to our two ratties... The little grey/black one looks like our little Ralphie : )
I remember how much my rats loved fishing for peas...classic rat fun. :) I love your videos Jo...always look forward to them. :) I can personally vouch, everyone, that Jo should probably win an award for being the greatest rat owner on Earth...she is absolutely amazing...her love, care and dedication to her rats are above and beyond...I always say, lucky are the rats who get to live at her house! :) :) Five stars!
@TheRatsmith I fed a young praymantis of mine a little dubia cockroach. They were underneath a upside down plastic cotainer and on top of a plastic bin. I let my rat free roam in my room while I went and got some food. When I returned the praymantis was missing except for a few little green legs o_0

I have a question about diet. SO if I was feeding an adult rat Harlan Teklad 2014 (And it was a male rat) I should give them about 78 grams a day?

@jorats so when you say "Free Feed" do you mean you just keep their bowl filled all the time? Because wouldn't you be concerned they'd over eat?
horselover8408 7 months ago
@Natsplat184 I use frozen peas but once they are in the water it starts to thaw pretty fast. I do run them under hot water first.

I've heard that they will fish for pet fish too, which is why you don't want them to get access to your fish bowl.
