whuts up wit dat "Something Evil!" thing?? is that already on that music pad thing?? or can u make the buttons say stuff like that? (like recording something and putting the sound on the button and it makes that sound)
dude, i dont want to be a mean guy, but if I had a 256 and sucked half as bad as you do at samples and making actual music (not noise) id quit doing what i was doing and give the monome to a person who is less of a nerd and more of a musician. THIS IS NOISE
monome is an awesome project and each to there own, whilst i appreciate that it is bout experimentation, it seems that all sounds blended in are a real cacophony and do not mix.....tune is far from evil! maybe Reason is more down peoples street.....i do respect the experimentation though
there a lot of negative comments here, and on other revbean monome videos, and i can understand why. here's an amazing tool that costs thousands of dollars, of which there is a limited number in the world and a limited number being made. revbean has two, and his music doesn't sound good. for those who feel they could be producing music more aesthetically pleasing with such a powerful device, it just makes you shake your head to watch it be used for something less than mediocre.
Both devices share superficial conceptual similarity in that they are made up of an 8x8 grid of light-up buttons. But that's about it.
The Monome is an (open-source) interface; it sends button press messages and receives LED on/off messages. The real magic happens in the software that it interfaces with, a growing pool of mostly free and open-source software written by a very active and helpful community. Its capabilities are by and large only limited by the imigination of its users.
I figured that the Monome, as you say it, was open source as one video included something about patches, or whatever (ignorant in this topic), for the sounds.
Because the Tenori-On is only different in that it's not open-source and has a feed for information in itself, I would believe that one would just make the Monome with an internal power source and an sd card slot for new sounds (not quite sure what they are called).
The Tenori-on on the other hand is an instrument. It has a built-in bank of sounds (or can send MIDI notes to an external synth) and a pre-programmed set of modes. This means that it can be played on its own, untethered to a computer (and is quite intuitive and user-friendly), but also that you are limited to the the modes that have been included by its creators.
Are you kidding me? Of course this is music! this is a live recording of revbean and his magically monome, the instrument of the future, with special guest Lax the Cat (drummer for the brides of funkenstein)[citation needed]. Didn't you see the use of mutiple interfaces running through the grid patterns. Plus the monome is so advanced that the main stream music audience has not adapted a taste for it. With experimental research like this by revbean the monome could turn out useful musically!!!!
Of course I just love destroying things for my own benefit, but the fact is you completely ignored the interest of others in this item as a musical instrument while simultaneously doing the opposite. Your great contradiction rendered your comment completely useless for your audience, aside from it's many other flaws.
Your cat seems to like the music, so good enough for me. Actually, I thought maybe your cat was stuffed at first as it didn't move until about half way through.

you're a disgrace to the monome. that was just random noise on a loop. if you're gonna spend all the money to buy the damn thing at least learn how to use it.
Uh huh. Where to begin? Well, first off, the primary purpose of this video was as a proof of concept demo for splitting the 256 into quadrants and running multiple apps, at which it succeeds, regardless of it's musicality. Secondly, white there are a number of loops in this piece, and some of them may be a tad arbitrary, none of them are in any way "random noise". (And even if they were, that wouldn't be an inherently bad thing.)
Third, and most importantly, the monome is an incredibly open-ended device. This is one of its greatest strengths. There is no "correct" means of using it. If you don't like the things that I've done with it, fine. There's lots of other people doing lots of other things, some of which will most likely be more palatable to you.
And um, "burn"? You're quite a friendly little bugger, aren't you?
that was dope!. but what exactly is a monome???. what category dose it fall on. exmpl: an MPC is a sequencer/drummachine/sampler... but whats a monome???
