@bondidog it all depends on the size of wave. Essentially the bigger the wave the faster you go. You can see more big wave surfers are using jet skis to tow them in. This is because they need the speed to catch the wave. So, with experience, talking to big wave surfers(45 feet plus) you need at least 30 mph to get down the face. After that you're at GODS will!

Awsome. Scary wipeouts. I´m kinda of a recent surfer (about 3 years) and I keep asking myself how do those guys do not drown. The impact of that lip seems to be gnarly. Sometimes it is scary to wipe out with 7 or 8 feet high, I imagine those... Great vid.

Have never surfed and never likely to, but have always admired those who can and enjoy watching them. Really enjoy watching when the surf is really pumping at Margaret River - western Australia. That surf is insane.

A question though if I may. I have always wondered what sorts of speeds are achieved when guys surf across the face of big waves. They seem to be going really quickly. Does anybody have any idea as to the speeds achieved?

@Bondidog The very largest waves get people moving around 40 mph (65 kph) according to various books and things I've read. (For example "The Wave" by Susan Casey)
