@Metalheadslive you do realize Fugazi are completely anti-mosh right? I'm also anti-mosh it's complete lost it's authenticity it's no longer a vent of anger and frustration it's become "that thing you do at shows" becuase everybody else. I much prefer to dance, nobody gets hurt and anybody of any gender can do it.
Fugazi emo?? hahaha..! very funny. Punkrock and some wiseass nerds call it Post-HC if you like. thats still cool with me. but emo...hahahah...! I dont even want to comment that one. but thanks for the entertainment. hihihi.
Actually...yes Fugazi were emo pioneers. Keep in mind though that this was long before emo was a word used every other sentence in 17 Magazine and to describe guys with tight jeans and bad taste in music. The were a band that had alot of emotion in their music. The same with Poisin the Well and Hum. Fugazi were "emotional" music pioneers. So yeah they are emo but not the emo you're thinking of.
Fugazi WAS what people used to think was "emo" before emo became a bad word. Talking 15 years ago or something.
Calling Fugazi emo now is like calling Talking Heads, David Bowie and Velvet Underground "punk"... I mean, yeah, VU is about 50 times more punk than fucking Sex Pistols ever were... but people will just call you a music snob if you argue that line, even if you're right.
For those interested in that, check out the book Please Kill Me. Good stuff.
fugazi is not emo, fugazi was around way long before the pop emo crap and fugazi rocks old school not like this crying pop emo crap thats been coming out recently. all the new pop emo crap is why i wont even listen to the radio anymore. because it sounds like dudes crying and that makes me want to vomit. fugazi sounds more like a drunk dude telling it like it is.
Since he is an "ethical and political correct" and openminded guy. Fugazi stands up for human rights, for being what you want to be and for freedom of the mind. Fugazi give a sh** what anyone would tag them. Since they know what and who they are.
emo is short for emotional or emotive hardcore not "emotional". Fugazi is considered emo but lets just call this good fucking music and leave it at that.
most of the people who say Fugazi were emo are the ones that have absolutely NO clue that Ian MacKaye was the fucking brains and balls of Minor Threat, who were in NO way emo. In a nutshell, the ones claiming Fugazi is emo are in fact, emo dorks trying to act like they know what the fuck theyre talking about.
THAT'S IT! Thank you! I couldn't remember his name for shit. Lol. There used to be a show that came on with nothing but Tex Avery cartoons. That was the best.
I'm totally gonna start saying that. It's not a very common phrase today but I like it so if you don't mind I'm going to gank it from you. Is that ok?
P.S: In response to the "emo" statement. all music has traces of emotion. So does that make all music "emo" or does it make the word "emo" fucking irelevant?
I wouldn't say that all music has emotion. Especially some of the terrible stuff that's popular nowadays. But if Fugazi's emo I guess I am too cause I Love this music.
If emo means emotional like everyone says it does, all music is emo. By common desciption, Going to California by Led Zeppelin is an "emo" song. Pink Floyd's "The Wall" is riddled with despair and talks of suicide, is that an "emo" album?
The point that I am trying to make is, people should stop calling "emo" shit. Mostly because the popular "emo" is really just pop-punk in disguise and also because if you think a band is emo because they show emotion or talk of suicide, then all music is emo.
Thats exactly what i said. Only you drew more comparisons. Slagging a band for emotional content is inherently ignorant. now for pop content. Thats alright...
emo bands today obviously never listened much to this. they're the same genre as Fugazi only in the same way Shania Twain is the same genre as Johnny Cash. yeah so Mars Volta sucks (however, they aren't even considered "emo") and they have no connection to Fugazi, but ATDI, unlike today's emo bands, clearly did listen to Fugazi (among others) and it showed in their music, like it or not. I personally think that band was great, while being bored by almost all of what passes for indie rock.
Emo (emotional hardcore) was started with a little DC band called Embrace it was not shite then. At the drive in are Emotional Hardcore -they're fooking great! The fact that the major record labels have grabbed the title and used to promote newage boy groups has ruined the term that pin holed a sound. Point is, don't use terms to describe music... just say what you like an don't waste your breathe stating what you don't like.
@bolusc23 on that same subject, just because "punk" (and I really don't need any arguments about what that fucking words means to you) got marketed to children through the pg-13 filter by money hungry business men DOESN'T render the entire punk-rock community invalid. If slick marketing gurus slapped "punk" on the backstreet boys today people would STILL be SO pissed, like the tag defines the genre. Remove yourself from the community, remove yourself from the BS. NO LABELS, NO MERCY!
you obviously have a misconception as to what emo is. It's not Fall out Boy and My Chemical Romance. Fugazi influenced most of the REAL emo bands that are out there today.
My friends often ask me the question: Why do you listen to SO MUCH Fugazi?
Answer: They kicked ass.
And no they weren't emo at all; people confuse them with Rites of Spring; it's just one of those associations that came with Guy being in the band. Total nonsense.
fugazi are probably resposible for emo but they weren't emo themselfs if it wasnt 4 them soo many bands like nirvana, mcr, and jus about every modern punk band wouldnt have existed they all stemed from wat fugazi started it the 80s although they're not that well know they have influence soo much
i know youre probably tracing this all the way back to minor threat, but nirvana started in 84, so fugazi couldnt have done much influencing there. haha.
actually they started in 87 as well and it can be argued a lot of the seattle grunge was heavily influenced by the dc hardcore scene of the early 80's. also, dave grohl grew up and played in bands in the d.c scene and although most of nirvana stuff was written by cobain, you can't really say that he didn't have an influence either. so.....i think you're not entirely right.
i was wrong on the number. 85 was when kurt and kris started playing and recording together, (kurt made the fecal matter demo that year,) but i guess if you want to call the year they started calling themselves nirvana then 88 would be a good estimate. and yeah. youre definitely right, grunge was influenced by old hardcore.
For those of you who consider Fugazi as an "emo" band needs to do himself/herself a favor and look up "Ian MacKaye-1986-Emocore is stupid" video clip right here on youtube. Fugazi was a real punk rock band with ethics and convictions. That emo genre is for people who like clothes and following fashion. That's it.
And by emo I mean that shitty recent stuff, not bands like Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Sunny Day Real Estate, Captain Jazz, etc. Figure I'd better clear that up before all that hate mail comes my way.
emo isnt a musical genre... emo means emotion or emotional which almost every song has..
Fugazi incorporated funk and reggae beats, irregular stop-start song structures, and heavy riffs inspired by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Queen(thats from wikipedia)
so you can stop your rave about fugazi being influenced by "REAL emo"
well put man... the stop start style u speak of is fucking cool... and shut the door may be one of the best songs man. i saw a live video of that song from them on you tube and like when i listen to it (and most fugazi songs) i get that tingling feeling like on the back of my neck and my skin just crawls bro, its so fuckin' cool!!!!!!
Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to refer to the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo.
Wrong. The Term 'Emo' came with the term 'Emocore' in the mid 80's. Fugazi was labeled as an Emocore band. Ian didn't like this nor did he like it. Fugazi is a hardcore band.
is a style of hardcore punk which describes several variations of music with common roots. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk . In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and later, Moss Icon. (In more recent years, the term "emotive hardcore" entered the lexicon to describe the period.)
