I still have the original Steppenwolf Live album that I bought when it arrived in stores in the spring of 1970. The cover's a little beat up around the edges and the vinyl has some light scratches, BUT I HAVE IT!!!
This was a single live concert recording from early 1970, rushed to release to meet product fulfillment contract with the record company. The live show was not long enough to fill a double album, so three studio cuts were added with very minor crowd noise overdubs to fill the double album: HEY LAWDY MAMA, TWISTED and CORINA, CORINA. The out of tune bass player (Nick St. Nicholas) was fired before this album was released and replaced by a pro, George Biondo.
elgroover: you might have a point there - check out the background crown noise - there is a whistle that is identical every time and is shown mostly on this track
I could be wrong, but I think most of this album was recorded "live" in the studio with crowd sound overdubs. Either way, there's a lot of tearing ass versions on it. Some, such as this one, are in my opinion better than the originals.
Almost all of it was recorded live in concert at various gigs in 1970. I understand there is a bit of production 'muckery' with part of the "Hey Lawdy Mama" track. I've read that the live part was spliced into a known studio version. I think the story of this little piece of "engineering", has given some the erroneous impression that the whole album is a 'mock live' recording. I don't believe so, their play sounds and feels live, I have no good reason to doubt it as otherwise......cont.... ;-j
@ELGROOVER I think the only major live album from that time period that was 'faked' was Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company. The three or four 'live' tracks on that were performed in the studio with crowd sounds from the Fillmore mixed in to make it sound more impressive. But Janis and Sam and the boys admitted to this from Day One, so I guess we can say it was faked but not hidden--no deceit intended. In other words, they were having a larf! Cheers for the groovy uploads!
Indeed It is the best Live Performance. I can't believe this album wasn't posted b4 now. The whole alblum is and still is a great live record. This band set in its time shaped a great deal of what was to become know as Heavy Metal. Which by the way is a phrase first coined by.. You know who. Yep Steppenwolf,. In Born To Be Wild. "I like smoke and lightning. Heavy Metal Thunder. Raceing with the wind, and the feelin' that I'm under"
I can't think of a live album th@ I like more than this, it's so good. I was very surprised too not to see it all posted up! Had to put th@ right!! Mars Bonfire aka Dennis Edmonton wrote the "Born To Be Wild" lyric, immortalised by Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda in the 'Easy Rider' film. Other songs of Mars th@ Steppenwolf recorded were, "Ride with Me", "Tenderness" and "Faster Than The Speed Of Life" ;-j
