  • They are opening for possession.

  • @Noctalunis clearly they are.

  • GOOBYE SOBER DAY

  • @DrRockzo1193 CHUCK CHUCK CHUCK CHUCKA CHUCKA CHUCKA

  • this reminds me of one of those awkward summer camp games

  • This beat is sick!

  • this is what drugs do

  • This is gonna sound really stupid (because it is) but in drama we're doing Artaud who really loved Balinese theatre and traditions and we wish to use this...so...we were wondering

...are there genuine words in this or are they just sounds? Our group is hoping to reproduce bits of this/something like this and we weren't sure if the noises were just monkey-esque or some were words. If so then I'm not sure we'll do it (we wouldn't want to disrespect this). Hoping someone knows.

  • @Tykilover The Pendan is saying "chak" to synchronize the dancers, the dance was devised from historical ritual dances such as the sanghyang and baris by Walter Spies and Wayan Limbak in the 1920's.

  • This is based on Hinduism. This religion is known as Balinese Hinduism :)

  • What religion is is from???????????????

  • what religion is this from?

  • wat.

  • The whole thing is an homage to the Ramayana when the monkey army and Rama fought Ravana and the army of demons.

  • so damn freaky

  • да они ебанулись все полный пэ...

  • I would for some reason love the opportunity to join in this someday. But I highly doubt I would be able to.

  • @vykusiEclectic The old dude cueing everyone is the High Priest of Pura Ulun Siwi, a very dear friend of mine and my Pendanda who died in 2000 and whose funeral I attended. He invited me to join in this dance on many occasions. The film sequence is the last film shot by Lorne Blaire before his untimely death and was filmed in the bathing fountains of the last Sultan of Gianyar whose grandson was the best man in my wedding. Go for it!

  • YEY!!!

  • mm the most memorable moment from Baraka.

  • AKA AKA <3

  • goodbye sober day

  • WTF is happening here lol I dunno but I love this video

  • la reputa! esto si que es cultura...lagrimas me me caen!! ahora hacemos eso ante estas bosta depantallas!! donde quedo el hombre!!

  • jakie pojeby

  • there are pictures of borobudur temple and budha sculpture, that's weird balinese are hindu and its about ramayana story isnt it?

  • @janitraprabaswara they are combined Hindu Buddhists, for Theravadic Buddhists he is the reincarnation of the Hindu God, Vishnu so these two religions are pretty much non-conflictual. And the shots overlooking the lake are in the crater of the Mount Agung Volcano on Bali, the very short shot of Borobudur is the lead in for Mount Bromo, which has remnant buddhist villages on its higher flanks where they were left alone by the Muslim missionaries afraid of the volcano.

  • @KwautLizard So is the religion based on Buddhism or Hinduism?

  • @koreanxforever123

Balinese Hinduism combines aspects of Animism, Ancestor Worship, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Some of these beliefs date back more than 4000 years. Indian merchants first arrived in Bali in about 200 BCE and it was probably these people who introduced Buddhism and Hinduism. The various competing Hindu and Buddhist sects in Bali have fused into a single ... Hindu and Buddhist texts are the source foundation of Bali Hindu.

  • @KwautLizard Thank you :)))))

  • What's the big deal? We did this in the college dorm all the time.

  • @LarsGunblade Yeah white people getting high and doing these things makes no impact whatsoever. Devout monks doing it on the other hand, leads to meditation.

  • THESE are spirit fingers!

  • chief is an amazing guy!!

  • It is no misconception us westerners are for the most part quite detached from the world around us. This is truly epic I would have loved to be there to witness this in full force.

  • Try watching this while tripping balls on phenethylamines

  • these guys dont have cell phones or ipads but its funny how they most likely know more about the world then any other westerner that has their hands permanently glued to their phone/ipad and their head up their arse

  • @bootstrap007 You have no proof of that. Seems like you just wanted to say something hip and cool by typically bashing Westerners.

  • @votumseparatum1 You are blind and stupid. I don't need to prove anything to know that.

  • @bootstrap007 They got cellphones, you need to travel more.

  • Thus The War Of The Monkeys ended without a single fatal action....only the spirits of the losers were destroyed beyond repair. The next 5 days ahead of these spiritual losers will be spent mindless and drooling without a care in the world as the victors throw bananas and mud at them as is their custom...Take care my wonderful friends and may the spirit of the monkey always be with you in the next war!

  • what the fuck is this? Press 1 for retards annonymous?

i just lost 100 IQ points for sitting through this

  • these guys know how to party

  • Incredible!!!

    Where's this video from?

  • Comment removed

  • Call od Duty tatatatatata !!

  • All for the love of Hanuman

  • thumbs up if you think Mike Patton does it better in "Goodbye Sober Day"

  • why the F am i watching this lol

  • Thank you !

  • A whole nother world I guess. Shows you how small us westerners are.

  • O-kay~

  • Apparently this ritual is a reenactment of a battle that happened between monkey's thousands of years ago. Forgot the rest of what my anthropology teacher said.

  • One must seek spiritual refinement, for it is the only way to true internal peace

  • @chowmeinchowdown is this actually a Hindu ritual then? I thought Buddhist maybe, but now that I'm thinking about it I'm kicking myself! I would love to hear more about it

  • This is so cool~

  • I love this so much...There's something so incredible about this ritual

  • and none of them wear deodorant...

  • @crimsondiscord365506 wait, what? does it really matter?! Can u just mention about how beauitful and rich my.. ehm..i mean, indonesian culture is..? D'uh! Please..

  • @nissarachmidwiati i think he was saying... that it's a good thing, lol

  • love this

  • powerful

  • Kecac means house lizard in Bali so I don' understand why this is called monkey dance. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  • @satsumamoon 'Lizard' in Bahasa Indo is in fact 'cicak'. That said, the 'cak' being chanted could probably have derived from the sound of lizards, but I think it unlikely. Nobody truly knows the origin of the dance, although there are various theories if your interested. Why it's called the monkey chant is however easier to explain. Kecak depicts a battle from the Ramayana epic in which Vanaras (ape-like beings in Sanskrit mythology) aid Rama.

  • @ChowMeinChowdown Fantastic. Thanks for the info. The world is forever blowing my mind by its richness

  • @ChowMeinChowdown Thank you :-)

  • this is amazing. Mike patton attempted this on a Mr. Bungle song, but hundreds of these people doing it at once is not something even a heavily multitracked fellow can hit. wow.

  • @xxtaxidermyxx Goodbye Sober Day :D

I watched this movie before I ever heard of that band... but as soon as I heard CHAK! in Goodbye Sober Day something struck me... and then the epic started. Amazing band

  • 2:42 onwards is just mad!

  • Cool!

  • I always thought this would make a sick sample for like a hard beat hip hop song

  • greetings from Javanese :)

peace all over Indonesia and the world!

  • Ever since I took a course on world music, I've been absolutely fascinated with Indonesian music! The complex rhythms at first just sound like noise, but then you begin to appreciate the intricacies of it all. It's just so different from the variety of music we hear in western culture--and it's just amazing! Thanks for posting this :)

  • i have seen this with my own eyes and it was amazing! The natives of Bali should never let this tradition die! If they did it would be a great loss to mankind

  • JAZZ HANDS!

  • Reminds me of Avatar.

  • @birdman631 I heard Avatar ending theme incorporated kecak chant, that's why

  • I recall hearing some of the chanting from the song "Mutation" from the Akira soundtrack. Since the soundtrack's creator, Geinoh Yamashirogumi uses a lot of Balinese instruments, it's not too surprising.

But yeah...watching this gives me spiritual chills...

  • my friend finds the weirdest things on youtube ...

  • ∑ [(THC)+(⅓ Ganesh)+(⅛Shiva)+(Baraka)]= ∞ ¡Puf!

  • super cool

  • westerners will never be able to understand these spiritual rituals .. they live like machines obsessed with materialism

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

Such is the problem with the US. We're obsessed with idiotic celebrity banality and manufactured, artless drivel.

Even the New Age movement, the closest thing we have to showing people the truth, is becoming saturated with quacks, plastic shamans and snake oil. Perhaps we must create a whole new culture that abhors such prolefeed, and is centered around direct action, spiritualism and the arts and humanities.

    *sigh* Amaterasu save us...

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP YOU'RE A PRETENTIOUS TWAT, anyone whos read the Ramayana knows what this is about. You and your burning man buddies dont stand Kecak

  • Comment removed

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP works for us:P

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP What about the mexican wave?

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP But Kecak wasn't organized like this, portraying these stories, until the 1920s by a German filmmaker . . . they're a manufactured tradition, so if it was created by a Westerner, where do you stand then?

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP materialism... and YOUTUBE!

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP machines, really? I think if anyone ever lived the same schedule day after day they would hurt themselves. Yes, some are materialistic, but it is not all we care about. Some of us are spiritual too. Stop bashing a=others peoples life styles

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Alright.... fag.

  • @LordGeowge "Alright.... fag." An example of western mentality.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Im not western...

    ..Your a douche

  • @LordGeowge you sound like one .. mentally challenged

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Coming from Mr. Biggest Douce in the Universe...

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP you realize this is a german dance, made by a german, and taught by a german? it started in the 1930s and means nothing spiritual.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

though i'd like to say...i understand.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

It was actually created in the 1920's, purely as a means of entertainment. The story (not shown in this video) of the Ramayana is spiritual, however Kecak trance chanting was created as theatre to create tourism.

I've been studying and performing Kecak for 3 years. Research before you bitch.

  • @ShesElectric808 read my previous replay comments before replaying the same bullshit..

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP well, u should come to Jakarta. and it's not very different than westerners here. we work like machines too. as the capital gets more and more westernized. we also know very little of cultural and spiritual understanding

  • Comment removed

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP i'd rather be a "machine" than a hipster who wants people to think he knows better than everyone else. Where are you from anyway?

  • @muffinsNsausage ah for fucks sake... why can't you people just leave me alone..... I don't think I know better than anyone else.. I never said that.......... I want to see change in this world.. I want people to change.... I'm not putting anyone down...... western style of living is terrible for the environment and earth as whole of you know what I am talking about..... Why can't people see this... why are everyone so shallow and narrow-minded

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP i'm sorry it's the materialistic machine in me speaking, my bad

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP stop cying

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Not everyone.. just some people are like that. I would like to understand and learn things like this.. though I don't understand it. Reading about things like this and others, only go so far. Experiencing is far better imho

  • @silvermystic2001 well that isn't my point... I think people misunderstood me. I'm not telling anyone to live a spiritual life but what I mean is that the everyday lifestyle of western man have not only affected the environment but the world as a whole for the worse..... with all these corporations, industrialization, weapon industry; this help western world's economy to grow while they enslave those poor people elsewhere... this mentality is the result of psychological illness...

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP because western man have poor understanding of himself and the world, he rapes the Earth, its resources and its inhabitants for power and greed. The native Americans, before western man exterminated them, were very spiritual people who treated earth as something that is part of them not separate from them. My point is that western people have poor spiritual understanding and since the rest of the world is slowly turning western, humanity is doomed!

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Everyone's materialistic thesedays, western or not - Capitalism has taken over as teh new religion. And its disgusting.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP You say that as if every single western human being is close minded and hopeless. Grow up.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP "they" are half the planet you've just generalized.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Oh God isn't that the truth!! And yet with all of our destructiveness we expect or want the rest of the world to live as we do!

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me! stop responding to me!

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Interesting, you've obviously never been to Ireland :D

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP What about "Happy Denmark"? (search for that on youtube)

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP I'm a westerner, and I agree. It's hard to break free of a society in which you are meant to work, make money, spend money, die. It's depressing too, when you feel that there is something more in life, but the easiest outlet to suppress that is just TV, computer, or alcohol. I'm about to go live in the fucking woods like a hermit

  • @Grundalizer You can change you reality.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP An oddly heavy condemnation from one who seems to assert they live a life apart. I dont feel I fit into this idea youve presented though I am a westerner. The condition you speak of surely is a heavily accept way of life, but it is surely not something solely exhibited by any one group of people. That being said there was a primal playfulness to that chant that was entrancing!

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Videogames > TATATATATATATATATATATATATA

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

Kecak was invented for tourists/film in the twentieth century. Just so you know.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP This dance was created by a Westerner--a German artist to be precise--named Walter Spies in the 1930's. Look it up yourself. Don't make vast generalizations too quickly.

  • @doczein why don't you read my previous comments regarding this comment.... geez

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP I find an amazing amount of connection to this.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

Riiiiigggggggggggghhhhhhhhhht........ so it's the westerners that have the inferior culture, because they don't do monkey dances?

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP As soon as you apply a sweeping generalization about any peoples, you've made your point invalid.

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP even if we weren't obsessed by materialism, this kind of ritual would baffle anyone without background knowledge

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP

"German painter and musician Walter Spies became deeply interested in the ritual while living in Bali in the 1930s and worked to recreate it into a drama, based on the Hindu Ramayana and including dance, intended to be presented to Western tourist audiences."

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Says the guy posting on youtube... shut the fuck up saying know one will understand I got here and I'm a "westerner" didn't I. Get off your fuckin high horse. Even if your saying you dont understand and yo never will because youre a westerner then shut up and stop calling yourself forcefully ignorant, jesus.

  • Respond to this video... So who got here because they listen to Mr. Bungle....talk about cultured westerners...

  • Watch it if you want some Avatar's spoilers

  • @Rad0sz yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I saw Avatar for the first time, that they copied it from this. This seems more powerful than what they did in Avatar though.

  • من القائد

  • i would shit myself if i walked around a corner and saw this

  • @seavseabsean LOL

  • @seavseabsean lol had to watch this to wonder what you were talking about.. I think I'd jut stand in pure awe o.O;

  • @seavseabsean hahahahhaa, so would i, my friend... so would i

  • Umm... what film is this from?

  • @Okarin Its there in the details...Baraka

  • SUCH A FUCKING GOOD FILM, if you watch the whole thing, but there wasn't enough throat singing.

  • its from seideken denetsu 2 (secret of mana) the dark lich theme !

  • really? When I watch this sober I get a transcendental effect from this. It eases me and middles me. I'm sure if I was on some sort of psychedelic drug I'm sure the effect would sky rocket.

  • 1:00 - 1:06 where can i get the instrumentals.. its mind blowing!

  • Must have been a sale at the kwiki mart, they are all wearing the same clothing.

  • @2k6adam movie...Baraka

  • I saw this in my Human Geography class today! I fell in love with it! cx

  • Bruce Willis on 1:30 \o/

  • This is beautiful energy. What an experience this would be to witness it in real. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @EarthElla The camera crew was lucky, tradicions like this are a dying occurance...

  • this looks really fun

  • Liberal White Douchebags would stare in awe at this and call it 'beautiful', pose next to a Muslim lady fully clad in a burka/pacman ghost suit and say, 'she was so friendly', but wretch in disgust when John Q Citizen is walking his family to a Christian church on Sunday...

  • @corrincrellin silly church go-ers. The earth is several billion years old, not 6,000.

  • @corrincrellin

i think all three should be held as sacred in their own right and should be respected. You have a point though, so many preach tolerance and than are intolerant to Christians. I am a Believer and a Sexual Anthropologist and I get attacked for my faith almost every day.

  • @corrincrellin John Q citizen going to Sunday church is a hypocrite That's why. He sings, cries, praises but yet goes out and judges and looks down on people that don't believe what they believe. Chrisitans are by far more prejudice then A lot of people. Think and beleieve what we think, Pushing city and state governments, schools to adopt laws based on THEIR beliefs.

  • This song should be in Donkey Kong Returns Again: Electric Boogaloo.

  • This is totally an Avatar rippoff!

  • @snertok This was filmed in 1992 or something like that..I only know because my art teacher told us
