I do not know the piece that is played. But might I suggest, that you but the CD " Yo - Yo - Ma. Vivaldi's Cello. Tom Koopman." I am quite positive that the songs that are played in this video are on that CD.
The Gamba IS a different instrument. For one thing, they normally have 6 strings rather than 4 and the fingerboard is fretted...whereas, the 'cello's is not. The Viola da Gamba also predates the 'cello.
oooo that explains it.....I had Elizabeth Wallwisch's Vivaldi concerto in A minor...whenever i tried to play along her tunning was a semitone lower.......thanks for the information!!!!
You know, everybody knows "jesu, joy of man's desiring," because we've all heard it a bajillion times. When Mr. Ma plays it, it becomes its own new, beautiful creation. I love the way he altered his (priceless) cello to get the exact sound he was looking for. Totally love this guy. Thanks for posting this video.
its not his cello, if its the Stradivarius, its a collector's cello which he bought after Jacqueline du pre's death in her will though she allowed yo-yo ma to use it, still it sounds so beautiful
well, it is HIS Davidov Stradivarius now because Du Pré handed it down to him...and it is still beautiful in what he's done to the gorgeous instrument
I wish they would make a DvD of the the project...the "Simply Baroque" CD is amazing! I'd love to be able to visually see the pieces performed.

I think they wear rubber sole shoes so the static electricity doesn't become an issue

His instrument is actually his Stradavari. He sent it away to be changed back to its original baroque set up for this performance

Baroque instruments are tuned a half-step down below 440 i believe.

i use a korg tuner (the little blue one) and it can go down to 415Hz

This song is hard on the bass because it starts on an offbeat and you have to feel the rythem to really play the song.

they violins sound out of tune because they are baroque violins
laxplaysu91 3 years ago
Yeah, I think all baroque instruments are tuned one semitone below the pitch of the original instrument.

By "original", I mean "modern".

Ton Koopman is amongst the best interpreters of baroque music. I think yo yo ma has been especially priviliged to play with koopman
firebreathone 4 years ago 2
Its also a priviliged for koopman for yo yo ma to play for them
