  • @headgrandma101 I go to RVHS and i know what you mean. I dont laugh. Directors have to change some time.

  • I absolutely love everything from 7:30 to the ending chord, which with the low brass sounds amazing!

  • awesome guard!

  • these guys work hard... don't give them shit. I don't like the fact that we're not as good as them but that's no reason to talk shit. they actually deserve lots of the stuff they win.

  • avon freakin sux

  • @kinko4d Too bad they got the highest score in BOA history with this show.

  • @thealexalberti Funny how in 2007 they had their best show EVER and the score wasn't on par with this years...total bs this year wasn't even the best in 08. Bell won in my eyes...and in 09 Avon deserved that.

  • @thealexalberti not this show, they're 2009 one, communiformity

  • @kinko4d Haha You suck

  • is avon a music conservatory?

  • No, just a regular High School

The only GN finalists I can think of that are like that are Kennesaw Mountian (Magnet school)and Tarpon Springs (has a music conservatory)

  • thats not true about km. it has a magnet math and science department but not the entire school. their director mr. starnes is just one of the nicest men ive met in my life. thats why they're so good. and being in cobb county helps.

  • ah I stand corrected

but yes cobb county actually supports music in schools and look at them :O lol

  • It's all good. but it's interesting how in general the best bands in the country, dont really have all that many stand out players. They just put in 100% effort 100% of the time. Lassiter of course is the exception. They have many stand out players and give 100% but they are the best in the country hands down. I was part of a far smaller program in a neighboring county. Last year I and 13 other members made all state with only100 in the program yet we never even cracked the top20 at BOA atlanta.

  • @baritonesaxx 100% effort 100$ of the time would be perfection, and that is simply not possible. you should look up Avon's 2009, now that one i love. most of the brassline is incredible individually and as an ensemble

  • KM had quite a few less players than us and have somewhere around 250 to 300 in their program.

  • contras or convertibles?

  • I like the KKK folks swinging the flags.

  • lol

  • Beautiful sounds from those contras, I wish we had them!

  • wtf? I mean seriously, a "'Don't make me come down there' -God" flag? What did that even have to do with the show?

Great drill and everything, but that threw me off.

  • trust me, if you saw the end of the show, you'd get it.

  • it had everything to do with the show...

  • Oh I absolutely love this show! Great job Avon!

  • is this the same show were u guys won grand natinals

  • yeah, I honestly didn't like it that much but it was complex soo i mean in that sense it was a good show I really liked push but that was our 2006 or 2007 show i cant rmember haha cuz marching band then drunline then baseball so im busy a lot lol but ya

  • yah. i expected more for the grand winners. at the same time in southern california the only AWSOME band was ayala of course. but they didt go to finals i was so suprised

  • No its the same show where they won "grand nationals"*

  • By more than a point, too. I didn't think they were that more amazing than LD Bell.

  • ARE YOU FREEKING KIDDING ME??? LD Bell gave me goose bumps...i have to say that this was pretty beast though.... color guard was AMAZING and so was the marching but yea...

  • o and about the drumline thing that kid was saying haha

    what a joke

the girls in our drumline are prlly better than a lot of guy drummers....the only reason our drumline might sound choopy is because we have close to the biggest drumline if not the biggest in the US with about 50-70 people in it so ya

  • 50-70 people on the drumline? that's just absurd.....

  • yeah tell me about it our drumline is rlly groupy...and we can clash sometimes but once its showtime we all get serious and work together but yeah thats ridiculous i know

  • i dont understand how you can have 50-70 in your drumline.....do you have like 30 snares 10 tenors and 20 basses?

  • I'm guessing they refer to their entire percussion section as the "drumline".

  • apparently...which is still a ton but whatever...is this an Avon kid?

  • Nope....not affiliated with any program. I'm not even in High School. Just call me a fan of the activity.

  • During a good year, we have about 7 in our drumline ...

  • this 41192cubs kid is annoying haha appraently so i would assume from all of the hate goin at him haha whic he probably deserved but ya Avon has a very good band program with amazing band boosters..and of course other BOA bands do as well and im sure bands that dont make it to BOA do as well..it all comes down to the kids working together as a group striving for excellence in every aspect and trust me we do that here, as do the other BOA bands. bands that me it there deserve to be there

    thanks

  • i would just like to say that in some respect money is an advantage in any activity but does not make the performer. Sure being able to pay the best staff and have a great show concept is a definite plus, but in the end what it comes down to is the kids and the performance of the show. so please don't take anything away from the amazing performance these kid put on

  • It's highschool drumline jesus christ you're not going to see crazy Bluecoat drum breaks, give it a rest. Once again this was a tripple header for us we started with the Avon invitational, then Indy BOA soundcheck, and at the end of the night we had this...So harsh to judge a simple drumline, this isn't WGI marching band drumline is just there for tempo and spice. So calm down

  • Honestly most of the drumlines in GN finals are pretty weak, their books are made especially easy because of their huge sizes. Seriously, does Avon really need 8 4 6 with like 5 cymbals? If they trimmed down their numbers they could actually get some real notes in.

  • dude avon= 6 time champs

  • Uh Avon BAND = 6 time champs, drumline has little to nothing to do with BOA scoring.

  • u haven't seen the drumline

go and watch them and then say there now good

  • Yes I have, I wouldn't judge them if I hadn't. They aren't anything special at all, big drumline =/= a good drumline. OMG look, 8 snares and 4 tenors!

  • grand national champions 2008

  • Cool, their drumline is still mediocre.

  • Amen.

  • The drumline is a small part of the picture. Plus, no matter what, you can't be the Grand National Champion and be mediocre. So I guess you're wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • I said the drumline was but a small piece of the performance. You have the amazing guard, excellent drum majors, and great hornline. What drumline do you participate in that could apparently easily defeat Avon? I need an example, since you apparently know exactly what you're talking about. I mean damn, they were only the Grand National Champions....

  • Comment removed

  • The drumline for ANY band is just a SMALL part of the performance ensemble. The entire group won, and they deserved to. And every other BOA band is loaded with money as well, probabaly more than Avon, so don't give me that bullshit. Go whine somewhere else. I live in virginia, and I'm just a fan of Avon, but you're pissin me off with your derogatory manner. Don't tell me lets get one thing straight here, how about you get a damn clue about what the hell you're talkin about.

  • Comment removed

  • actually the fees can get quite pricey even there. they just have crazy band boosters that know how to raise some serious cash....at least at Avon

  • Clearly you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Last I knew, Carmel's band fee for marching band was close to $1200, and Avon's was maybe $600-700.

  • I've had a show written by Richard Saucedo, and I know all about Indy bands thank you. You forgot Ben Davis in your list btw. Go ahead and make referencer to all of this garbage, unless I see an official report saying Avon's band raised 1 million plus dollars, I will in no way believe that. Anyone can sit here and spout off ridiculous crap, which is evident by your prior postings.

  • If you have such a problem with Avon and their drumline, why don't you stop hiding behind a screen name, go on out to Avon, and tell Jay Webb to his face that you think his drumline is awful, and tell him, and Jeff Queen for that matter, that the drum book that they wrote is too easy. Oh, and do let us know on here when you plan to do that. I'd drive on out to Avon to see it.

Wait.... Is this the same kid from Upland High School that was on here a while back, until he got found out? Shame

  • Are you a judge, or have you taken proper training to be a be an adjudicator? No? OK, then. I am not saying that you are not allowed to have an opinion, but you are giving absolutely no CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. "As a marching band advocate," I thought you would like to give them some ways they can improve, not tear them down with such sexist comments as "Girls on tenors, rofl." Clearly, you don't wish to give every student equal opportunities.

  • I'm sure folks from Avon and who work with Avon know the areas they need to improve on each season. Noone from Avon has said they were the best band ever. In my personal opinion, Plymouth Canton 1998, Spring 1993, Lassiter 1998 are right up there as well, although you could rip those bands apart as well. I choose not to, because I appreciate the greatness they brought to the activity those years. I'm not saying you should even like Avon, but it seems like you are targeting one section.

  • hey i kinda have to agree with you on that, but then again drumline isnt the only thing out there.

  • is the piccolo line at 6:40 an original, or does anybody know what song it is from?

  • what pieces did the show music come from?

  • Cool!!! I want to be in marching band next year!!! Do you have to try out? does anyone know?

  • it depends on what band you are going in. like for example. Broken Arrow marching band is a try out band. to get in you have to try out. but in most bands you dont... all you need is some experience in playing an instument. also. the most important thing. you must know how to read music. and good luck!

  • if youre going to avon, then no you dont have too... unless youre in drumline or guard. but if youre going to be in the hornline, then just show up to the very first practice this summer. if you have questions, contact the band directors.

  • As the Puerto Ricans say that QUE BRUTAL MI HERMANO!!! ... (is like a spectacular), jajaja. I congratulate you from Puerto Rico. I love your presentation. They have fans in the island's charm. Towards adelate and much success.

  • i understand why people are mean. In South Carolina Irmo High School (where i'm from won ten straight marching band championships. Nobody liked us. Bands turned their backs on us at state every year. Don't be upset at Avon. Mr. Harloff makes those kids earn every award they get.

  • good for you

  • Harloff is hilarious. he was a director for the BoA honor band and he cracked jokes every 5 seconds.

  • Comment removed

  • Ha Irmo also took 11th at 2001 grand nats, .95 over Broken Arrow

  • @mkjlilman2000 Yeah now irmo sucks. just saying. did the director change????

  • Way to go Avon at BOA, I wish I was still in it but hey you can't get it all the time.. we still can come back next year and take our state title again and by luck take BOA title again... Loved the show...made me want to be in it this year... but hey "are you ready for football, now and zen, push, and requiem" we're fun to be in...

  • didnt you guys come in 1st place this year at boa?

  • yes

  • I don't understand how people can come one here and truly have such negative comments.Obviously they are all out of jealousy because it makes absolutely no since.Obviously by the date this recording was taken, no band is going to be peaking, every band in the world is going to have some issues in the beginning of October. This band is the best in the country and I know those judges who know what they are doing and all, were picky in who would they thought would win the Eagle and Avon earned it

  • Hey I'm from Western, I saw your show at state finals and It was AWESOME!

    Absolutely loved it!

  • Might be just me but how did that show win? unless it was 10 times better in finals

  • that wasn't the full show, and yes at finals it was a LOT cleaner.

  • I practiced on that field this past summer! woo hoo!

  • OMG you guys are so awesome. i lurrve you!!!!! but go rampart regiment

  • yeah my band

  • Good band! :) but so-so drum line . . .

  • agreed. i really liked how our show (af) had a drum break in our show, but i guess the judges didn't. i assume your drumline is really good, they just didn't have a show that had percussion parts like ours.

  • What is your marching technique? I'm from LC and we have the flexed foot technique, I'm just curious on how other bands such as Avon's marching band being a national champ march. By the way, you guys love to creep up on us, but there's no hate, your show was good and humorous. Though our show broke records at my school and our drumline were beast this year.

  • im not sure how well you can explain it on the internet, but basically heal, arch, ball, toe. i dont know how else to put it.

  • Lafayette!? you guys go! representing us band who've never been to finals ^^ Golden alliance suports you! ya! *screams lungs out*

  • you guys were amazing in indy :] congrats to you guys, you're definately a band to look to as a role model for smaller bands.

  • so true considering that i went to a small school in kentucky

  • Great show guys, I loved all aspects of it. Funny story / general effect, great music, and the marching was excellent. I was glad that I got to see the show twice in Lucas Oil Stadium. Congrats from a PCMB parent!

  • was this at football game...but anyway im from lafayette high school band and i just wanna say congrats u guys were really awesome in grand nationals.this was our first year competing in grand nationals so we had really looked forward to seeing u guys

  • Congrats Avon on Grand Champion! I loved your show!

  • Congrats on Winning BOA Avon!!! You guys are amazing!!!! On the way home we watched ur movie "from the 50 yard line" awesome movie!! Great Job Avon!!!!

  • really haha try top 10. its jealous ppl like you that fuels us to try hard and do great. There is no need for plain stupid comments like this

  • You don't do great though, that's the problem. Your band did it and as a dl you played some the sissiest notes I've ever heard a dl play. Musically, your drum line is laughably weak not only in difficulty of literature, but execution as well.

  • One of our first shows...the drumline was still young...and seeing the camera that this was taped on the audio quiality is terrible..so most of the lines note go uncalled for..conact the band program and see if you can get ahold of our score, compare it to say..LC or carmels book...you'll see the difference.

  • I saw your dl at nationals, and yes, they weren't good then either.

  • obviously they were better than every other dl in the country so you must have high standards.

  • it's not that they were the best dl there, they had the best show. the dl really does not play a big part in BOA, in fact, as can be seen in almost any of the bands who made finals, the less the dl plays the better. They were not the best, they just were fortunate enough to be attatched to the best band, but those guys had laughably little musical talent. I think Jeff Queen is slipping, and badly.

  • toomanyoysters- seriously. are you even paying ATTENTION to this drumline?! saying avon drumline has "laughably little musical talent" is so far out there. i think i'll put up a video my mom took of them, then i think you'll change your mind.

  • Okay, please post it, I'd like to see it.

  • You obviously haven't seen their indoor drumline, so please don't comment about matters you know absolutely nothing about.

  • I have seen it, and it is not impressive. There are sadly very very few eastern bands with great drum lines.

  • So... you're saying that Avon is a poor drumline... and that there are very few eastern bands with great drumlines....

So you're talking about, I assume, the drumlines from Dartmouth, Centerville, Center Grove, Ben Davis, Norwell, Carmel, and those other eastern bands that year after year get accolade after accolade?

  • not top ten. not top twenty.

  • According to results at the WGI world Championships this past weekend, Avon placed tenth.

  • Comment removed

  • is it really necessary to say that? let me say that im from new york and have no affiliation at all w/ avon, but seriously, when you say comments like that, you ruin everything good about band and the reputation of bandies. maybe theyre not the best; idk much about drumline, so i cant really say. but i know that they dont "suck balls" and i know that they are a great band, regardless of drum line. keep your negative comments to yourself.

  • I'm in American Fork, and congrats to Avon! We really meant what we said as you ran off! :) I know that some people think we might be mad or bitter about not making Finals, but we're not! We are a little disappointed, but really happy with our 14th place! :) Good luck in years to come at BOA, I'll see you guys again my junior or senior year, whenever we can make the trip! :) :) :) We really look up to you guys; you do AWESOME! :) :) :)

  • i saw the top 6 bands and well i cant decide witch one is my faverotites but you guys marching is well of the chain

  • Congrats Avon! I am a Centerville alum and I was thrilled to log on to the MFA site and see your picture on the main page! Well done!

  • wow... good job avon! congrats! but seriously, your drumline sucks balls, how is it possible to have jeff queen as an instructor, play 29 ticks in finals, and still win with such a high score. just cuz you are avon thats why. American fork had 3 ticks in their whole show, and Kennisaw mountian had 5. There really needs to be a percussion caption in BOA.

  • E-mail someone about it if you feel so inclined, I already e-mailed them about concerns relating to staging and such, but I am sure they would appreciate your comments as well. Additionally, if you judge just on ticks you discredit the entire activity and performance - there are plenty of other aspects to judge besides just individual player ticks.

  • you are right. They do marching like mad men. No bouncing, good upper body. Very nice. It's just the drumming. This activity is starting to turn into a visual competition more than a music competition. It wasn't ever meant to be that way.

  • yea we (the drumline) need to march better but we will be good i think

  • I agree it has become more of a visual competition! But not to say all of the theatrical shows ARENT amazing!! They are, but out here in the west where i'm from, we have more traditional marching band shows. This so is still awesome i loved it.

  • what do you mean by ticks?

  • I think he means dirty notes, but I'm not sure, because by that definition the dl's whole show would be ticks . . .

  • He meant dirty notes I believe but he's wrong because that whole show was pretty dirty..

  • ok well im sorry you think that because there isnt a band that is better in the country so i would stop talking crap

  • Maybe so, but I can think of at LEAST 30 drum lines better then your piece of crap.

  • And? You act like you know everything about drumline. Who fucking cares? All you've proven is how much of a douchebag you can be on a Youtube comment board. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a cookie 'cause you're such a cool guy. Give me a break.

  • Comment removed

  • that's interesting, because the judges (you know, the guys who know what they're doing and whose opinion actually matters) obviously didn't feel that way at grand nationals.

  • wtf are you talking about we won nationals...

  • I was at Lucas Oil last night and I seriously almost cried the colorguard was so good.

  • Yeahhh Right on!! Yall deserved to win. I was there watchin yalls show. A win well deserved.

  • I was at Lucas Oil Stadium last night and everyone around me agreed your show was quite entertaining. Congrats!

  • Im in the Ben Davis marching band, but im still going to congrat you guys for best in the nation. :)

    good job.

and heck we're happy with tenth. :P

  • Good job B.D. from 10th best in Indy to 10th in the world awesome comeback!

  • dood your guys first sets are hardcore. They move really fast and they look really good. I was for sure L.D Belles were gonna win but when i heard yall won i was like NO WAY. And now i see why. CONGRATZ

  • YOU DESERVE IT AVON!!!!

  • congrats guys!!

  • Congratulations Avon High School on your GN victory!

  • CONGRATS ON GRAND NATIONALS 2008!!!!

    You guys are amazing.

  • HOLY SHIT AVON IS IN 1st going into finals at grand NAT!

bell is in 3rd!! EPIC FAIL!!!!!

    I HOPE YOU WIN AVON!!!!!!!!

YOU GUYS HAVE GOTTEN SECOND TOO MUCH U GUYS CANT DO IT JUST WIN!!!!!

  • Their routine was fabulous, I have to admit. Congratulations, and well earned.

  • you dang avon kids & your visuals.... i'm so fucking jealous

  • 1/10th of a point...LC was clean but the crowd loved Avon. The judges obviously went with LC though.

  • ohmygoodness, i absolutly loved their performace at state & bands of america. :) in my opinion, you guys should have gotten 1st. :/

*i was their for Spirit of Woodlan, Class D. but i saw you guys perform & it was awesomee. xD

  • Aw, thank you! (;

  • man we should of had state in my opinion

  • no because LC is way better.

  • Yeah...3/10th's of a point is "WAY better"... though I agree...LC as champion wasn't a shocker after seeing them both. Coulda gone either way.

  • Hm way better.... lets recap those BOA scores.....

  • im fully aware we won considering i was there...

  • Yeah, i completely agree that we should have gotten it.

  • i luv this show i luv the sighs they r soooo funny avon is hudge

  • oh nvm its at Avon must be a football game or something

avon's invitational was in the day

  • this at Greenwood invitational?

  • 2 years i'll be in this band :D

  • what are the musical selections in this years show? its great btw i love it

  • "MassIVe"

    Part 1: Critical Mass

"La Fiesta Mexicana" - H. Owen Reed

"Symphony of Psalms" - Igor Stravinsky

Part 2: Weapons of Mass Destruction

"Ave Maria" - Johann Sebastian Bach

    Part 3: Mass Media

"God Said" from Mass - Leonard Bernstein

    Part 4: Mass Exodus

    "Organ Symphony" - Aaron Copland

  • the ave maria isnt by josquin deprez?

  • Not originally, although I'm sure that it was redone. The original version was by Johann Sebastian Bach =)

  • ah well, josquin deprez lived before Johann Sebastian Bach so one of us is confused. I know the words are from a passage in the bible, maybe it's just different musical interpretations?

  • I think it's me =) I just copied and pasted what was on their website. Maybe they used Bach's arrangement and that's why they used his name.

To be honest, I had never heard of Josquin des Prez, so it's very possible that you are, in fact, correct. I can only speculate. =]

  • it's all good :)

  • you are going to be told to take this off by a staff member soon i bet.

  • Way to go! How many people are in your pit, I notice because i am in pit too?? Good job, I will see you at Grand Nationals, we (Vista Murrieta High School) actually go on right after you in prelims.

  • does avon have any ties with c. crown? i noticed one of the 09 audition camps is at this school.

  • we have some staff members that work their. quite a few avon kids go to crown as well. so we are related indirectly.

  • Wow, my band did God Said last year at Grand Nats, but i have to say, ya'lls part for the Contras was pretty sweet.

  • Way to go Avon!!! I have always been a fan of this program. What's the show title?

  • Avon looking sharp as ever. It's amazed me how cleanly they march. Their technique is so consistent across each member.
