School property, they can do whatever they want with it. A webcam shot of its surrounding can tell a lot of where the machine is. These two aren't up to date on tech aren't they. Even your own equipment spies on your computer routine let alone an equipment that is anything but your own.
I went to that school and I can tell you this... the school mention that they can detect where all computers are at all time, but that does not require doing anything with the webcam... I can tell you this some of those rich kids and their parents keep getting money hungry and ill tell you what i do not agree with it, the school is providing more stuff to students so that they can get all assignments done, they dont give a damn what you are doing... they can tell what you are doing on the laptop
How are they going to 'locate a lost laptop' through the webcam? There is a 99%+ chance that the laptop would be CLOSED. Finding lost laptops is clearly not their motive.
I think it's OK to monitor just the screen. But you shouldn't be monitoring her. You don't need the camera at all, just the ability to monitor what she is viewing on the screen.

@jw2113 Accessing somebody's webcam requires a backdoor program to be installed on your computer. If you have a good firewall, malware protection, noscript, etc., it is going to make it a lot more difficult to install said program. If someone has a school-issued laptop, it is much more likely that they would be spied on by the school, as opposed to a hacker. Two wrongs don't make a right - just because you can compromise somebody's webcam doesn't mean the school is justified in doing it.

My laptop sits almost perpetually on my desk,, shut down and/or closed when not in use. Not that I would want somebody watching through my webcam, but it's not something that I, myself, am concerned about. It's more a question of compromising people's right to privacy without their permission.

@jw2113 The problem may exist but with basic antivirus software anyone trying to access your computer will be blocked or you will be asked if you want to allow the connection. However the school district pre-installed software on the computer, creating a whole new problem. The computer is expecting a connection so nothing out of the ordinary is found. And the fact that the school did not inform students that they can see through the webcam automatically justifies the students showering with them

If they look at wrong time, they may see students changing/getting dressed, etc. Does not matter their stated intentions, this is wrong either way. First of all the laptops were not stolen. The laptops were "supposedly" activated by the software on 42 occasions but that does not account for the hundreds of pictures that were taken. Also the reason stated for activating the software was that either forms were not turned in for the laptops for the insurance was not paid which is why they were designated "stolen", again this is from the district.
also since so many others are reporting webcams being activated it would appear that either there is a glitch with their software or it was deliberate spying on the administrator's part. Since this only came to light because an overzealous administrator thought a kid was popping pills, which turned out to be Mike and Ikes, it would appear that this was a deliberate act of spying on students. There needs to be a thorough investigation on how far this goes.

wow, I'd fucking sue this school dry if that happened to me. Our school issues us laptops with webcams & could possible be spying on us. I'm thinking about trading my school issued laptop & bringing my own laptop to school. Even if it's stolen my cheap ass laptop still has a built in GPS that updates every 15mins. Only way to ensure your school has no access to a school computer, is reinstall the Windows OS yourself from scratch with your own copy. If you do not, you're accepting a preset PC designed to the schools IT configuration. It's not a hacker, it's not a virus, it's not a trojan. It's an IT administrator with ACCESS to your system. Reinstalling the OS is the only way to be sure his local policy is not in place unless you have admin privilege and know how to reset his settings, which can be many.

Don't use school issued property to spy on kids in their own home. If they don't want students using the laptop for non-school related activity, they shouldn't let them take it home.

Don't leave the laptop open and you can cover up the camera with a piece of paper with tape over it. Or cloth or something You're making it a bigger deal then it is. and of course the school should tell you about the camera and stuff. I don't know if they do it at schools with laptops but they have us sign papers for the use of laptops at my school. I've had a laptop since 6th grade and I am now in 10 grade.

What I find very funny about this situation is that while people here are complaining about privacy in laptop's webcam and mic. Most would not have an issue with the Patriot Act which allows the government to circumvent our privacy in the name of safety.. So technically speaking, this is no different... I do not agree with the school, it is school property and they do have jurisdiction on the property.. That is why you should not bring school computer at home. Use common sense shut it down

Ya, who knows when they decide to look for a stolen laptop. If they look at wrong time, they may see students changing/getting dressed, etc. Does not matter their stated intentions, this is wrong either way. Who is to say a teacher, administrator, etc. won't miss use this? They could be lying and stuff. It doesn't matter, nothing makes it ok, these are children, Stop!

First of all the laptops were not stolen. The laptops were "supposedly" activated by the software on 42 occasions but that does not account for the hundreds of pictures that were taken. Also the reason stated for activating the software was that either forms were not turned in for the laptops for the insurance was not paid which is why they were designated "stolen", again this is from the district.

also since so many others are reporting webcams being activated it would appear that either there is a glitch with their software or it was deliberate spying on the administrator's part. Since this only came to light because an overzealous administrator thought a kid was popping pills, which turned out to be Mike and Ikes, it would appear that this was a deliberate act of spying on students. There needs to be a thorough investigation on how far this goes.

@mastior you're right, it is a leased/loaned program, in which the students take home the laptops as well. they don't keep them, in the beginning of the school year the school distributes them and at the end of the year they take them back. i would know, because i go to harriton and that's just how it is. she did not steal the laptop, and she's not a theif.

I'm thinking about trading my school issued laptop & bringing my own laptop to school. Even if it's stolen my cheap ass laptop still has a built in GPS that updates every 15mins. Only way to ensure your school has no access to a school computer, is reinstall the Windows OS yourself from scratch with your own copy. If you do not, you're accepting a preset PC designed to the schools IT configuration. It's not a hacker, it's not a virus, it's not a trojan. It's an IT administrator with ACCESS to your system. Reinstalling the OS is the only way to be sure his local policy is not in place unless you have admin privilege and know how to reset his settings, which can be many.
