For most of the Desert Rocks I used urethane foam. For much larger rock formations like Cascade Peak I originally used a paper mache technique with paper towels and watered down glue, that was later covered with celluclay. More recently I've been redoing the Cascade Peak with styrofoam, floral foam, and celluclay, which are all cost friendly materials
No, it's selectively compressed to fit the area of the table so some things were moved, changed or omitted. But all areas on the model are very close in the details in how they appeared in the attraction.
Research. Hundreds of hours looking through any kind of photos, books, magazines, websites, videos and blueprints that are out there trying to find any kind of reference photo for just about every details. There isn't one single source that I use.
I rode this ride once, i was 5 in 1967 and its still my favorite disneyland ride of all time. You have done such a wonderful job. Can you tell me did you scratch build the loco and cars or just modify?
you know what you should do when its done? you should put a camera in one of the cars and have it go through, dub audio from the ride over it, and post it on youtube as a "ride through"
that's such a good idea. I've always been so fascinated true life adventure ride concept. I've always wanted to make a large scale model of big thunder. If I had the money, and the space, I totally would.
How much more do you have to do? i really want to see this inaction! when your done, you should put your camera in one of the cars and have the train go through the ride as if you were riding it! that would be so cool! i love this model so much! your doing a spectacular job!
A lot still needs to be done. I need to finished up the desert and then move into the town and redo Rainbow Ridge. Following the Mule Trail, progress will move into Beaver Valley and Bear Country. Once those areas are done, Cascade Peak is getting a face-lift and some improvements. I'm redoing a lot since I did the layout when my skills weren't up to par as they are now. I'm aiming to get it pretty much complete by July of next year.
It's more like many YEARS of work, since I started the layout in 2005! (Though if I had actually worked a little harder on it, I think it would have been finished by now!)
awsome! i wish mine was as good as that!

The shell was scratch built for the locomotive, the chassis is from a Bachmann 0-4-0. All the cars are scratchbuilt.

wonderfull work! I would love to see more video of your layout. Is the sound track orignal to the ride?
rangerjoel 2 years ago
No, it isn't the soundtrack from the ride. It's the score from the mine train section from the film "Disneyland: People and Places".
