A letter from Gallatin Sheriff Jim Cashell to Gov. Schweitzer said he would not put inmates in Hardin's jail because it is "basically a warehouse."

Schweitzer invited Montana law enforcement to consider using it, never opened due to a legal battle. On 5/1/08 it defaulted on $27 million in building bonds. Most of the jail consists of 24-inmate rooms guarded from the hallways. Cashell said he asked how they would deal with problems in the unguarded rooms.

The warden said: "We'll gas 'em."

If you did something bad and society wants you to change, what part of living in horrid living conditions with messed up folks will result in a better human being when he/she gets out? From the pictures it looks a little different from any of the prisons I've seen, the tv's don't have a transparent case, they have a pharmacy and a commissary, they also have a barracks style bunking, never seen any of that before, of course I've never been inside a prison, but have seen plenty of photos of the insides of prisons and had a roommate that was a prison guard.
