This is almost exactly what I show my students. This is a great exercise. It will open up the fret board and tune your ear. Glad I found this! Good job man!
@gamers209 there is a HUGE learning curve to any instrument. especially because when you first start playing, you can hear the massive difference between what you doing and the real thing, just work on it.
You have the coolest voice. Do some audiobooks! Cool exercise as well. Just what I was searching for, found it on the first try by clicking your video.
dude can u tell a lil more about thumb position???.....can i slide it a little or does it have to be on same position...imma complete beginner sorry...!!!
Really great video. I've been looking for a good dexterity exercise for a while; I've been playing for quite a while, but I mainly focus on rhythm, so this is a good bit easier for me to jump into but still very good on keeping my fingers agile and quick.
Yeah, I remember my first week or two of playing. I was almost in tears (I was something like 11 or 12 at the time) because I thought I just couldn't play. Silly, not limber fingers.
Thank you sooo much for this video!! ( : I haven't been treating my guitar very well these years (wedding..baby...) This will help me get back into it nice and easy instead of full speed ahead (which usually ends in me putting the guitar down again-frustration & such) Thanx again
@07LeeMoore07 It could be a rsult of not pushing down hard enough, or more commonly bad placement, make sure you are towards the right side of the fret, if you are to far to the left side of the fret area it will buzz. If you still find the problem, it could be the guitar itself.
This is the best beginner video I have seen. I just started playing 3 days ago and have no idea what I am doing and this helped a lot. Most of them are like oh yeah..just do these 4 chords put that together...then just slide your hand here and look!!! Your'e playing songs!!!
@ChoclatexLesbians - Keep trying, your fingers will increase in ability to stretch. Just like someone trying to do the splits, it's not going to happen overnight but through continued practice.
Thank you so much for the upload. Dexterity was one of my problems. This vid has given me another way to improve my mediocre playing (still new to it, so what do I expect? lol) Very easy to understand. Thank you again.
When playing it backwards and getting fingers 2 – 4 ready on the string above while playing the last note on the previous string with finger 1, am I supposed to press down fingers 2 – 4 on the correct frets already or shall I gently stay in that position and successively press down fingers 4 – 2 as I play the notes up?
@JolleyRog3r Yeah, you let your fingers hover over the above string until you are ready to change to that string. Try to get in the habit of keeping them as close as possible before it's time to press down as well.
Great little lesson. I just decided about a week ago to finally learn guitar and I have been doing this exercise every day for about 45 minutes to toughen up my fingers. I figure if I can keep this up for two weeks I will spring for real lessons and a used guitar. I am definetly getting better and more comfortable. GREAT video!
when i do this excercise i tend to mess up less when im not looking at either of my hands/ fingers...but when i look at my right or left hand i mess up more
Hey man.. ive having slight problems when the 6th string or the E string... my fingers wont move really my 4th finger doesnt really press down the string on the 4th fret... Any idea if theres anything i can do to improve my stretch?
my fingers are really short. is it normal at first to feel strain in forearm? can someone show me how its supposed to look on the back of guitar? i feel like i am holding the guitar all wrong.. or is this just normal for now
@salester26 It's normal to feel strain in the fingers, hand arm, all the way up to the shoulder, but try to not strain and keep everything relaxed. For the back of the guitar neck, your thumb should be aprox. behind the position of your middle finger it's natural;ly for it to move up and down, but not side to side. I will do a video on posture soon, have to get a new camera though.
Oh dear, THERE'S STILL HOPE FOR ME. Today is my first time playing the guitar and my short fingers were in pain. Do you recommend that i get a 3/4 guitar?
@jjd705 I'm not sure what you mean exactly, try using your right hand to space out the two fingers and they can get the hang of it. If it's a disability, I still would not say it is going to limit your playing, look at Django Rheinhardt!
@jjd705 I'm also not quite sure what you mean, but there are many guitarists out there who have developed their own style to compensate for hand injuries or defects.
Thank you for this excellent lesson. I am kind of old to start learning but this is very helpful for someone like myself that is at the point of learning from the absolute beginning.
My very first lesson. I feel like my hands are too small and my fingers don't want to lay flat on the neck so i'm working on being able to put my entire hand in the correct position. I'm determined and think this is a great way to start. I played the piano for years and this is total a different hand positioning.
i myself am right handed so this question might seem stupid, but for a person that is left handed, would the general concept still be the same, or would there be a different technique they (left handed people) would have to learn?
I quite like this. Only got my guitar on Thursday, and already I feel like i can do this fluently. Well at least to 30% to 40% to this videos level. Which isn't too bad I feel.
you know i actually found if u need to strengthen your grip(silly i know but try it) play guitar hero it helped me get my reaction time up and helps u increase your hand strength.
I use to do this exercise and my pinky use to look like yours...far off the string...its actually better to do one at a time and still keep the fingers close to the strings
What if you're having trouble locating the strings you need and you have to keep looking down or over the body of the guitar to find them? And what is the best way to work on hand positioning? I've heard a few people say pretend you're holding an egg or golf ball? Any suggestions........
I'm a teacher myself, and I like your style. I teach a similar exercise, but I recommend they release their fingers to increase mobility across the neck. I recognize holding all four fingers down as being a good strength building exercise, yet it sometimes seems to limit mobility. What do you think?
@RockMusicTeacher Honestly, I think that could get people into bad habits/technique where they end up lifting fingers when not necessary instead of working on economy of motion. One of the points of this exercise with the fingers down is to increase the dexterity and mobility in the fingers, which can be a challenge, which is a good thing in my opinion.
Thanks. I'm definitely going to keep using this to warm up and practise keeping my fingers down on string and off the ones below. It's helped a lot already.
I'm trying to do this, but for some reason my pinky always bends towards the direction of the 3rd finger. -_- Fucking useless ass pinky. Then again though I have sprained this same pinky in the past so maybe its just weak now, lol.
10 years ago I stopped playing my guitar.2 months ago my wife of 28 years passed away....A week ago I purchased a new amp, dug out my strat and started playing again...I'm 49 years old..And up until I stopped playing 10 years ago..I played guitar almost everyday, most of my life (in bands) and I found this excercise challenging and extremely useful.,,My fingers are killing me,,,lol...Thanks!
P.S. My thumb keeps wanting to climb up the back of the neck...Any suggestions?
i just bought a guitar, and im trying to learn, same thing happens to me, its hard not to touch the other strings...hopefully i get in the habit of doing it right.
Hello I have started practicing as per you have shown. But when i touch the fingers over one string, they also touch the below string. So is this normal or ideally it should not touch the lower string?
@GOGGLES0510 Try slowing down and if need be, every time a finger comes up, use your right hand to put it back down before you proceed to the next note/finger.
@Guitar101Ramstein Thanks Bro. I tried what you said and slowing down does seem to help a lot. I still have a long way to go but i hope this helps me. Thanks again
@GOGGLES0510 yeah, it will seem a bit aggravating to go slow at first but you are really just training your fingers to work properly, so it's very important, once you start getting used to it, speeding up will be a natural process, and your playing will be easier and sound better in the long run.
Thanks man I just started learning how to play about a week or so, I used to play the drums and I always wanted to play the guitar, I have an electric guitar, I hope I can get it. I know it takes time. Thank you again
@nfarnham2008 - I use this exercise for the same reason before playing live or long periods of time with strenuous, fast music. Also, just some general stretching for you wrists, fingers and arms helps to avoid cramping or pain. - Just make sure you warm up slowly before playing anything fast.
@nfarnham2008 Sorry to respond late on this, and that question is difficult to cover in a quick response, to sum it up, think ergonomics. It's a very good question though, so I will do my next video entirely on your question.
i want to start learning to play guitar again. but i want to play/write songs in the post hardcore/screamo/metalcore genres. will these vids help me with that?
@Guitar101Ramstein I think he means pentatonic, but this, as ya said, isn't a 'lesson' but an exercise. Not teaching anything, but good advice. I use a similar thing on bass but working all the way up the fretboard in major scales. It's an old Victor Wooten warm up.
@Guitar101Ramstein Man I need help stretching to reach farther down the fretboard, do you have any tips? I need to play the 10th fret with pointer, and 14th with my ring finger.... does not seam possible.
thanks i have a quick question when ever i try to play plicking the strings sorry for the errors spelliing isnt my thing but it feels weird to me like i can keep track of what string im on but im unsure of really how to do it in a way i feel comfoable
this is rly helpful! but even though you say its easier to put your fingers to the bottom of the fret i stil find it mor comfortable tho keep them in the middle
I been doin this exercise for a month now am pretty quick at it and it helped LOADS..altho if a do it for sum time, my left thumb starts paining..is this supposed to happen? also i tend to do it faster when my right pinky is anchored to the body of the guitar.. am i doin it wrong or sumthing?
Thanks! I'm a dominant left-hander just starting to teach myself guitar, and this is incredibly helpful. I reversed all the strings on my guitar to play left-handed, but I don't have the dexterity or strength yet in my right hand, so this should help a lot.
feel like this is going to shred my wrist up like crazy. will this cause carpel tunnel? especially cause i will keep practicing this exercise until i get it. however long it takes. thank you
@1111BLAKE1111 as long as you are not bending your wrist in an awkward position, you will avoid any damage to your wrist or hand by learning to play this way in the correct posture.
I've been able to strum chords for the last 20 years or so, but have just recently started learning for real. I'm using the Alfred books and so far, so good. I can't seem to get my wrist into the position in your video. I tend to rest the neck on my palm and sort of wrap my thumb around. When I try to do it the other way, I can't seem to control the position of the guitar. Any advice? Thanks and I really like your videos.
Here's my question, does it matter if you're doing this exercise with the guitar resting on left thigh when you're gonna normally play music with it on your right thigh? I mean is the transition natural?
The problem I have is that my fingers, epecially my "pinky" moves too far away from the fretboard while placing my other fingers on the guitar, do you have any tips or advice?
My pinky just cannot stretch and bend properly to get the 4th fret while keeping my index finger on the 1st =S. If I release and move everything down, then yea I got it. But I think my hand anatomy is cursed and my guitar career is going to be super short.
@CJHarty That's very common at first, you will train your fingers to stretch further with this exercise if you just keep at it. Just be sure to keep attempt at making the little finger reach towards the fret without lifting your other fingers.
@CJHarty i cant tell by your post how long youve been playing but like he said. if u keep at it youll be amazed at how ur fingers adjust. when i first started to teach myself by reading tabs and just trying my best to play, i noticed my hand cramping, ha fingers HURTING LIKE CRAZY, not being able to stretch. being REAL annoyed by the fact that i knew the progression and how to play it but my fingers couldnt do it fast enough. guitar is like sports. repitition. my fingers stretchs 6 frets now. =]
When you move from 6th string to 1st string and vice versa, does your thumb move? If your thumb does not move, is it in the middle or the lower part of the neck (say at the back of the 2nd string? thanks
@stan3721 Yeah, your thumb will pivot up and down, if I play on my bottom string, my thumb is higher on the back of the neck, and lower on the neck if I play on the top string.
I've just started learning guitar and can play a few chords (open and barre) but I can tell you my finger dexterity sucks. I'll definately be focusing on this leson for a while. Added to favorites. Thanks!
Who the hell would dislike this video? I hope Thor comes out of the skies on a giant eagle while playing the intro to raining blood and just summons the strength of all the gods to shove his foot up their ass! Great video btw helping out alot!

@GOGGLES0510 Do it agaisnt a wall or something so fingers dont raise up that much

It helped so much. Thank you.

Thanks man I just started learning how to play about a week or so, I used to play the drums and I always wanted to play the guitar, I have an electric guitar, I hope I can get it. I know it takes time. Thank you again
MrBHahn 7 months ago
I'm going to try this because I find my fingers cramping as well as some minor pain in my wrist, I have been playing for a week.
nfarnham2008 8 months ago
@nfarnham2008 - I use this exercise for the same reason before playing live or long periods of time with strenuous, fast music. Also, just some general stretching for you wrists, fingers and arms helps to avoid cramping or pain. - Just make sure you warm up slowly before playing anything fast.
Guitar101Ramstein 8 months ago
@Guitar101Ramstein Okay, Thanks! Any advice on the best way to sit and hold it, posture, while playing acoustic?
nfarnham2008 8 months ago
@nfarnham2008 Sorry to respond late on this, and that question is difficult to cover in a quick response, to sum it up, think ergonomics. It's a very good question though, so I will do my next video entirely on your question.
Guitar101Ramstein 7 months ago
@Guitar101Ramstein Thanks, because I have found certain positions help finger dexterity it seems.
nfarnham2008 7 months ago
How much time should I be spending on this each day?

wow a half million views for a chromatic scale....
666alikat 9 months ago
@666alikat Actually, you would have to add one more fret per string to play the Chromatic scale :)
Guitar101Ramstein 9 months ago 16
@Guitar101Ramstein I think he means pentatonic, but this, as ya said, isn't a 'lesson' but an exercise. Not teaching anything, but good advice. I use a similar thing on bass but working all the way up the fretboard in major scales. It's an old Victor Wooten warm up.
DymlostheOni 7 months ago
@Guitar101Ramstein Man I need help stretching to reach farther down the fretboard, do you have any tips? I need to play the 10th fret with pointer, and 14th with my ring finger.... does not seam possible.

thanks i have a quick question when ever i try to play plicking the strings sorry for the errors spelliing isnt my thing but it feels weird to me like i can keep track of what string im on but im unsure of really how to do it in a way i feel comfoable
heretic1915 9 months ago
this is rly helpful! but even though you say its easier to put your fingers to the bottom of the fret i stil find it mor comfortable tho keep them in the middle
jesswunder95 9 months ago
this is kinda hard.. buy practice make perfect

you are actually the first youtube video that explained the process slowly and intuitively.

I been doin this exercise for a month now am pretty quick at it and it helped LOADS..altho if a do it for sum time, my left thumb starts paining..is this supposed to happen? also i tend to do it faster when my right pinky is anchored to the body of the guitar.. am i doin it wrong or sumthing?
sankster36 9 months ago
my hands are too smaallll. finding it hard to have all 4 fingers on at the same time.
this is helping though, thank you!
Kezipoo 9 months ago
Thanks! I'm a dominant left-hander just starting to teach myself guitar, and this is incredibly helpful. I reversed all the strings on my guitar to play left-handed, but I don't have the dexterity or strength yet in my right hand, so this should help a lot.

Thanks for the tutorial. The first time I tried it, I found it too difficult, especially for the small finger.
Daputaka 9 months ago
is this exercise beneficial for styles other than classical like blues rock that dont use classical technique so much?
1111BLAKE1111 9 months ago
@1111BLAKE1111 Yes, it's good for any style of guitar playing.
Guitar101Ramstein 9 months ago
also is it okay to replant the thumb for each string? or are you supposed to keep it planted the whole way thru?
1111BLAKE1111 9 months ago
@1111BLAKE1111 the thumb will natural pivot up and down.
Guitar101Ramstein 9 months ago
feel like this is going to shred my wrist up like crazy. will this cause carpel tunnel? especially cause i will keep practicing this exercise until i get it. however long it takes. thank you
1111BLAKE1111 9 months ago
@1111BLAKE1111 as long as you are not bending your wrist in an awkward position, you will avoid any damage to your wrist or hand by learning to play this way in the correct posture.
Guitar101Ramstein 9 months ago
@Guitar101Ramstein (I'm totally new to guitar) can this exercise be used on electric guitar's? or would you recomend starting out with acoustic?
Makkymc 9 months ago
@Makkymc It works for electric and acoustic, though you will get more out of the exercise trying it on an acoustic.

Any advice? Thanks and I really like your videos.

what about the right hand?
FrozenSparky 10 months ago
@FrozenSparky Just pick the string you are fretting, start with down picking, then progress to alternate picking (down up down up)
Guitar101Ramstein 10 months ago
Here's my question, does it matter if you're doing this exercise with the guitar resting on left thigh when you're gonna normally play music with it on your right thigh? I mean is the transition natural?
alipbob 10 months ago
@alipbob Really, whatever feels comfortable is fine. Sometimes I use my left thigh, sometimes the right.
Guitar101Ramstein 10 months ago
from a self-taught guy _ start playing bass first - using the same technique - guitar will be a natural progression - at least it was for me.
;-)

The problem I have is that my fingers, epecially my "pinky" moves too far away from the fretboard while placing my other fingers on the guitar, do you have any tips or advice?
Great vid, thanks

ashrafelnemr 10 months ago
hi- can you explain what variations you recommend that we can do with the right hand? what do you usually do? and please add some more lessons!!!
bethanydemaio 10 months ago
My pinky just cannot stretch and bend properly to get the 4th fret while keeping my index finger on the 1st =S. If I release and move everything down, then yea I got it. But I think my hand anatomy is cursed and my guitar career is going to be super short.
CJHarty 10 months ago
@CJHarty That's very common at first, you will train your fingers to stretch further with this exercise if you just keep at it. Just be sure to keep attempt at making the little finger reach towards the fret without lifting your other fingers.
Guitar101Ramstein 10 months ago
@CJHarty i cant tell by your post how long youve been playing but like he said. if u keep at it youll be amazed at how ur fingers adjust. when i first started to teach myself by reading tabs and just trying my best to play, i noticed my hand cramping, ha fingers HURTING LIKE CRAZY, not being able to stretch. being REAL annoyed by the fact that i knew the progression and how to play it but my fingers couldnt do it fast enough. guitar is like sports. repitition. my fingers stretchs 6 frets now. =]

You are beyond any doubt a good teacher, Thank you for this and all that you do. Keep it up!
saintdlee 10 months ago
When you move from 6th string to 1st string and vice versa, does your thumb move? If your thumb does not move, is it in the middle or the lower part of the neck (say at the back of the 2nd string? thanks
stan3721 10 months ago
@stan3721 Yeah, your thumb will pivot up and down, if I play on my bottom string, my thumb is higher on the back of the neck, and lower on the neck if I play on the top string.
Guitar101Ramstein 10 months ago
I've just started learning guitar and can play a few chords (open and barre) but I can tell you my finger dexterity sucks. I'll definately be focusing on this leson for a while. Added to favorites. Thanks!
