merci à eux qui on réussit à accompagner notre vie de mer.. jusqu'à aujourdh'ui et qui nous rappele nos jeunes (et folles)années

  • Has there ever been a musical instrument quite as magical as a Stratocaster?

    I think not.

  • @captainbimble Especially not when in the hands of a legend like Hank :)

    peace

  • Perfect!!!

  • That's not Hank Marvin - It's clearly Allan Holdsworth.

  • Didnt on e of the Shadows drown or something.

  • Hank Marvin is a legend. He was good with The Shadows and he's good here many years later.

Like a good leather jacket, and like good wine Hank just keeps getting better. And I'm sure since he's become one of Jehovah's Witnesses he's even a better person for it.

  • Just brilliant !

  • i didn't know that Tony Montana can play guitar this good!

  • Are they still playing these days ??

  • Hi Super super super,pozdrawiam MrElvis2:):) (POLAND)

  • hey thelowmax different john williams matey

  • great music,great perfomance

  • M A R A V I L H O S O

  • Composed by Stanley Myers in 1970. First featured in the film, "The Walking Stick", in that year. First recorded as an instrumental by classical guitarist, John Williams, who is not the movie composer of the same name, long before it was used as the love theme in "The Deer Hunter", 1978.

Lyrics written in 1973 by Cleo Laine titled "He Was Beautiful". Typical Laine Schmaltz, further dramatized by Shirley Bassey and others.

Best vocal version (by far!) is by Carmel Conway. The voice of an angel.

  • I think, maybe, it was written by Stanley Myers .

  • Though they play it brilliantly, this composition was written by John Williams, not the Shadows

  • lindo

  • my father was a big fan of the shadows.

every time we came over we had to listen to the cd .

this number was played when we walked mij father the last time where everyone could say good bey to him.

i never thought this would be a song that i would love so much.

its been over a year now but the pain is still like yesterday....

thanks dad for everything... your my idol

  • What can I add that hasn't already been said here. Hank is a master of tasteful guitar. I have no doubt that Gilmor and Gary Moore, and all the other incredibly tasteful players, would all show this man great respect. After all he was doing this stuff so long ago, and has been refining his sound ever since. This lovely song is the perfect vehicle to show of his masterful playing. Thanks for posting it.

  • I was there!!

  • They play this song so beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • I did write an essay on this movie in 83 and did not know this music by the Shadows !

  • @TheBirdboots The original music written for The Deerhunter (including this, Catavina) was composed by John Williams who also wrote the Star Wars theme and Many, many other huge film scores.

  • So flawless :-) I admire you Hank !

  • If not for Albatros, this has to be the best Shadows song.

  • @leepop633 'Albatross' was by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac'...

  • Maybe you mean this performance was 1989?

  • @sneha1965

just read the Info ;) the CONCERT was in 1989

  • The Deer Hunter came out in 1978.

  • The best guitar lessons in the planet! The best memories.

  • wow.......

  • This tune always makes the hair on back of my stand , it's a beautiful haunting theme, I remember the film 'The Deer Hunter' well

  • i played this in church when my grand-pa died..

  • that is just fantastic wot a great tune

  • Still makes me go all goosey! So much emotion in an instrumental. :(

  • im listening to the piece on and on. cant get enough of it. drowned completely.

  • listenen to a few people play the guitar ova the years but..none as talanted as this guy ..awesome to listen too

  • amazing this SR

  • Moi rodzice tego słuchali a zwłaszcza tato...muzyka dobra na wyciszenie po prostu supeeeer

  • What a amazing piece of music. It's one of those rare things, A song that is both deeply sad, but at the same time really moving and touching, What a gr8 song.

  • haunting & beautiful music

  • This is what I love about You tube, I can find wonderful music like this and read the touching comments, you must be a beautiful person "margotreehugger". I was a teenager when Cliff Richard and the Shadows had all those hits and seeing the Shadows and hearing them makes me very nostalgic. Hank Marvin, great talent and the theme from Deer Hunter, simply amazing.

  • He is so underrated and the group is also..RWB

  • Simplesmente, fantástico.....

  • A "big" tune and a great guitar player needs a big jacket. Awesome tune...

  • Wonderful tone and execution, making every single note count!

  • This is pure and unadulterated musical elegance. The Shadows, you really rock!

  • Donc c'est ce qui s'appelle "le beau"

  • Weery talent, wirtuoz, mayestro, king quitar, champion, men of the best.

    Thenks.

  • Good job,Hank. Definitely agree with the comments from Gitar Stu and Hit The Skins, absolutely valid.

  • please listen also to bruce...he is also a fantastic guitar player

  • there are loads of utube guitarists on here doing the HANK B MARVIN copy thing . so what does that tell us.

hes the most initated and best loved of all the uk guitarists.

the SHADOWS were class ALWAYS WERE AND ALWAYS WILL BE.look how many records they sold. just AWSOME

  • Amasing what Hank does with a simple vibrato arm on his stratocaster, many today have to have a 5 foot controlled wawa pedals etc to get the same sound. He makes it sound like a cello here.

  • Comment removed

  • It's not the tremolo bar that makes it sound like a cello but a delicate control of a volume pedal which gives him those swells. Knopfler does the same thing. Vibrato is applied for a pitch bend.

  • Extraordinaria musica y canción.

  • Beautiful. Hank Marvin sounds great as always. He did insipre David Gilmour by the way... "Sleepwalk" on the Strat Pack show was amazing... see it!

  • The song is 'Cavatina' originally written in 1973 for piano and adapted to guitar for John Williams, then used in the movie in 1979. Big hit for Shadows as well in '79.

Added to my 1979 playlist, I am playlisting by year songs of the past century. Lists 1950-1975 each play for an hour so far.

Nearly 200 playlists by artist as well, my channel is a time machine. Come click on a year and escape for an hour with music like this..............

  • I was at this concert, brings back many memories. Thanks for posting!

  • jeff beck in his guitar shop tryes some of these sounds

    hank a true master

    love the shadows

    thanks

  • i bet ur david gilmour wd fall flat if he was told to play " Foot tapper"

    :P

    SHADOWS r legend.

fast playing with loads of semi-queaver notes is not everything u know

  • I don't think Dave would play Foot Tapper because it's not his style, and honestly, it's not that technical or challenging. Same as I don't think Hank would play any of Dave's songs.

I like the Shadows, but it annoys me when people shoot off about other artists in different genres. It's a meaningless comparison. Both men are equally as good as each other (although I think Dave is the greatest guitarist of all time).

  • Best LEad guitarist, is that a joke????

I like this but his play is very simple.

Ok he has a lot of emotion and he play perfectly but if you want the same emotion with a better technique chek solos of david gilmour.

  • the beauty of HANK MARVINS PLAYING is its simplicity.

but the fact remains hes got the best tone echo and sound coming from his stratocaster and its the player not the instrument .

GILMOUR is great but HANK a genious

  • " The Shadows " sono una leggenda !

    Bravissimi !

Hank Marvin fa suonare la sua chitarra anche come un violino ! 5*****

    Claudio

  • Once again, thanks for sharing your beautiful videos.

  • Words can't begin to describe how wonderful this piece is when Hank plays it.

  • grazie tami per la condivisione, forse anche troppo serena!! ciao pier

  • IT makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up " awsome"

  • Hank makes the "Strat" sing.......

  • good shout freddie... however JW comes a close second

  • Hank Marvin is truly a genius on the guitar and he is the best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be.

I've heard this tune played by various other artists but only his version that I will care to have it replayed over and over again.

The best instrumental piece ever and it was performed by the best lead guitarist in the world.

Hank is my idol many many times over.

  • beautiful

  • Whow

  • farkin awesome

  • 20 years ago, great performance ! best greetings from germany !

  • I absolutely adore this song. I used to be walking home on a moonlit night and this song would come on my iPod and I would feel at one with the stars and the universe. It was the greatest feeling... and even now it makes me cry hearing this song. Great perfomance by the band and special compliments to Hank.

  • breathtakin performance!!!!!!!

  • Knopfler uses the pedal and Jeff Beck plays the volume knob for the same effect. The knob thing is quite easy on a strat. Surprisingly few know it though.

I'd like to hear Jeff play this song.

  • I am confused about what you mean ,Hanks sound is echo through a valve amp . A Watkins copycat sound , nothing to do with knobs .

  • Thanks for posting this mate

    fantastic

  • Agreed....... billspeverton

  • Fantastic.

Sharing this beatiful piece of music was an awesome idea.

    Great instruments and great performance.

    Thanks.

  • Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

  • CLASSIC!

  • He definitely influenced Jeff Beck... great tone

  • The Shadows, the ultimate instrumental group.

They found the sound that they wanted in the early days and stayed true to it.

They were also very talented composers, they wrote most of their early hits, and also wrote a lot of Cliff Richard's hits too.

  • @RayBushfox Sorry, you mean the VENTURES

  • @mrpentium No I Don't!!!

  • GENIUS

  • Can someone please tell me if thats a Wah Wah pedal he is using? Cheers

  • It's not a wah, it's a volume pedal.

  • no it's the wammy bar, it's hank marvin he's famous for it

  • Yes, he is also using a whammy bar. But the PEDAL he is using is a volume pedal. ;)

  • i thought he was just using the volume on the guitar

  • i have 100 of tracks by this GROUP . THE SHADOWS. ive seen them play live 5 times at different stages of there career.

they are light years better than any other instrumental group ever.

no one ever got close. and theres been some good ones. just sit back and listen to a genius on a strat

  • His guitar sound is the most beautiful in the world.

  • I love the shads., but when i close my eyes with this song i see bambee getting killed and stuff lol... especially cause its called deer hunter..

  • It's called Cavatina, it's the theme to the movie Deer Hunter, so what you should really be seeing is a game of Russian Roulette with Vietnamese people shouting DI DI MAO

  • HANK B MARVIN the most loved and idolised guitarist in the history of pop .

listening to this. im never surprised . hes just awsome .

  • Yep I think he is the most loved and idolised guitarist . Your words are so true.

He never surprised me either, just totally awesome!!

  • I grew up in the states , and a Aussie mate of mine turned me on to the Shads . Love them.

  • meant to thumb-up, but the stupid mouse slipped...

  • beautiful, i can close my eyes and be taken away in a subliminal dessert island

  • yes it is very beautiful :)

  • youtube needs a loop button just so i can play vids like this over and over

  • try a play list for yourself?

  • Great performance of Hank and the others.

The original with clip I found here on YT.

    Cavatina-The Shadows.Great music!

  • in this last days i was very unhappy and this song always make me smile

  • beautifully written, beautifull y played....

  • the sounds are amazating coming out of that guitar.

  • Ah, the cheezyness... You gotta respect what they did in music before you were born

  • no doubt .

this is my favorate version of cavatina by other other yo'll

  • ..so peaceful and so beautifu musicl!!5/5

    Thanks for share!!

  • hi... my dad wants this song... can you give me the link to download it please?? this song is great!! ***** ;-)

  • well, you can try to download soulseek (filesharing) and search there =)

  • don't try just that song try the complete album the song on the The Platinium Collection album are one by one master pieces

  • if he has an i pod try i tunens

  • Just exquisite...

  • You are totally right bruvtilov! I feel the same...

  • Say what you want about cheezyness...but this is what making music is all about. Every note Hank plays is given the royal treatment. Not over- or underplaying. Notice the subtle yet crucial use of avolume pedal and whammy bar. Brings back so many memories. My dad took me to a Shadows concert in 1977 (my first) and Hank's the reason why I became a professional guitarist (though mostly in heavy metal and country rock ;-). Man, his playing moves me to tears.

  • Brings back such fond memories. My dad used to play this on his guitar and was a big fan of The Shadows.

  • Whenever I want to remember my dad, I listen to this song and it's like he's in the room with me, playing this tune again. He played it just like this. I miss him so much. This is my favourite Shadows Song.

  • thank you for sharing your feeling (:

  • @margotreehugger My father passed away 18 months ago and me taught me to play the guitar when I was young.

We used to play Shadows songs together, this was one of their greatest and memorable songs.

  • @margotreehugger. It is mine to. I think it is real nice of you to remember your Dad in this way. Hope you are all right.

  • @margotreehugger ...you must have had a wonderful father and a great relationship...what a blessing...hope time proves to be healer...

  • Breathless.....

  • Sir Pete, this is excellent, I love it!!

  • John Williams is my favourite on acoustic but seeing Hank playing this is so different. Its just amazing how he is playing (with) his guitar. Seen them in concert. Kippevel!

  • he is amazing to watch he is doing his own playing and watching the others out of the corner of his eye.

  • way to go nivram- still the best
