I met Jean in Clinton NJ in the early 1980's. Had dinner with him and had a wonderful time talking to him. I lived in the little town of Whitehouse Station off 22 , 1960 to 1977. Left and came back to visit.
Somewhere millions of lightyears distant from 1440 Broadway some lucky souls on a murky planet are just now tuning into their first Shepard broadcasts. Lucky bastards.
Ah, yes, the good old days when we made numerous trips between the "Big Top" and the "Adventure" car hops, one quarter mile at a time. Let's see what you got!
Jean Shepherd was my childhood hero. So many nights in the dark, listening to his voice! He worked entirely without scripts - how he did it was sheer genius. Every night, five days a week, the Bahn Frei Polka would start...and he would talk. Then, on Saturday, he'd broadcast live from the Limelight Nightclub in NYC for three hours.
And here he is, showing me the highway of my youth. I could have been in one of those cars! I miss you, Shep. I hope you are happy - you deserve it.
Holy Cow! what year was this from. That was an amazing blast from the past. Tico Taco. I remember it but forgot where it was exactly. Tiny Tots, Fabricland, EMKAY Paints, Gino's, 2-Guys, Channel Lumber. Great Stuff!
Great nostalgia for me. When my Dad drove the family to Grandma's house in Irvington in the 1960s and 1970s, we would almost always use Route 22. The first time I had Mexican food, it was from Tiko Taco (3:50 to 3:55). I got really sick and threw up in Grandma's toilet.
Jean Shepherd was a genius in radio (NPR), television (PBS), film (A Christmas Story), books and magazines (Playboy's "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" and a regular columnist in "Car and Driver". Brilliant observations on Americana.

Anybody have access to sound bites of Dennison Clothier ads? They were SO overbearing.
