Cremation is the Hindu final death process along with immersing the ashes or partly burned corpse (if poor and cannot afford wood) in the Ganges. Note not all Indians do this.

However, a politician recently made a cremation building that was cheaper so those who can't afford the wood cremation can be cremated as well. It's not because they're poor--it's a Hindu ritual. They believe that bathing/being cremated and put into the Ganges will take the person to heaven.
